Not long ago I photographed Leo in his tennis attire. Not long after that session, Leo asked me to take pictures of his Hydrangea garden.
Even though I have known Leo for more than a decade, I didn't know he had one of the best Hydrangea gardens in the country.
Leo's very proud of his garden, and with good reason - he has every major variety and hundreds of plants overall.
Leo is planning on creating a Hydrangea gardening book in the near future. As such, he wanted some images to use in illustrating the book.
I took many pictures of his Hydrangea garden over the past couple of weeks. However, once his largest plant came into bloom, I finally got my favorite image. The size of this plant is unusually large, and it's a prime example of why Leo's an expert at cultivating these relatively fickle plants. In order to demonstrate the scale of the plant, I asked Leo to sit in front of it so that the plant's size could be put into perspective.
strobist: 1 Canon 580EX, camera left, bare, zoomed to full, pointed at subject (Leo). 1 White Lightning Ultrazap 1600, camera left, reflected into a 64" White Lightning Extreme Silver PLM (lighting part of the plant that had become shaded by a nearby tree). Flash and monolight triggered via Cybersyncs. Monolight powered via Vagabond II. A B+W circular polarizer was used.

Today I decided; why eat lunch at my desk when I can visit a massive waterfall instead?
This waterfall looks deceptively small from this angle, it is actually listed as a 175' waterfall with the tallest single drop at 75'. The waters were still roaring from our major snow-melt earlier this week.

Irrational fear of Mexican immigrants was a primary tool in the original campaigns to demonize cannabis, including referring to it as "marijuajuana."
Today is a big demonstration against the anti-immigration sentiment rising in our country, and Mexico has recently proposed legislation to legalize small amounts of many drugs including cannabis for personal use in efforts to focus on dealers and traffickers instead of "consumers." It's a real shame that will be used as more anti-Mexican ammo in the upcoming midterm elections.
Update: Unless Mexico's Presidente Fox decides he won't sign the bill after saying he would- I think we can thank Washington for forcing the hand of Fox......not the channel this time.

We are winding down towards the end of our vacation and I wanted to do a quick upload. This image captures the joy of vacation - my little boy leaping in the ocean for the first time.

Keyser Reliable Wire & Cable, INC. occupied this building for over 15 years. Over the years the building was home to a machine shop, a manufacturer and as an auto repair facility. It’s one of those buildings I’ve walked by on the way to school. Driven by 100’s times. Sat beside it many times waiting for the light to turn green. But, I never thought to photograph it in the 70, 80 or 90s.
In the mid 2000’s a green canvas awning stretch across the full width of the building. The building was up for sale in 2017-2018. I can’t recall exactly when the partial demolition begun but almost ¾ of the front of the building was torn down.

One of my favorite little waterfalls. Not quite as much water as I would've liked, but still beautiful nonetheless.

I have to admit it, this picture has been slightly rotated by 2 degrees clockwise since the horizon was not very straight. Aside from this, it is a black & white shot directly straight out of the camera using a polarizer and the in-camera red filter.

Upon a vacation to the San Francisco area, there was an immediate need to visit the wine country just north of the bay area. The day's tour started off cloudy and cool but ended up being 65 degrees and sunny by the end of afternoon. Had to keep asking ourselves, "why do I live in such a flat city (Chicago)?"
I love putting on my circular polarizer and taking some cloud shots.

Friday the 500 ton piece called a "grillage" was hoisted into place. Early Sunday I stopped for a few shots on my way out the Gate after salmon. I caught a few good photos, no salmon. Please view large.

Method to my madness: Nikon D40, 18-55mm Nikkor kit lens, circular polarizer. Sorry, forgot to bring my Hoya R72 this time, had to make due. In Photoshop I used the channel mixer and selective desaturation of greens and reds.

Got together with Messina today. Local band from Woodstock, CT. They've been around for a while but they're becoming serious about their music now. Needed fresh promotional pictures. This is one of the locations. I think i'm going to post up one more shot from the last location we went to.

Oceana County's Historical Society occupies the Chadwick-Munger house in Hart. According to a 1986 article, it was designed and built in 1892 by a doctor named Chadwick, and was subsequently lived in by the Munger family for many years. It served a variety of civic purposes before coming into the hands of the historical society.
This afternoon and early evening I stepped outside and took a country cruise to find some local creeks/streams (water sources.) SPRING has sprung! :)
Among the outskirts of my hometown, I went to a known location where I could hear the sounds of peaceful running water. I parked my car and grabbed my camera gear where I would walk a few hundred yards due southeast, and there it was...
Before me was this amazing little stream with water runoff; my ears blissful to hear the calm serene sound of nature taking effect. I loaded the Canon 60D up on the tripod, set the AEB (-2, 0, +2,) and with the releases of the shutter remote I captured this scene per the image above. Note the grass blades and their reflection on the water's surface.

HDR Experiment, never tried it before, this was taken at Duke Gardens, Durham, North Carolina. USA, it was full mid day sun and several people in the photograph. I wanted to get back some of the saturation and distort it enough to make the people unrecognizable but yet still distinguish them as real folk.

There's no feeling like driving 10 hours down to the mountains, hiking an hour to a nice waterfall, opening your camera bag and realizing that you left your ND filters in Ohio.....luckily I didn't intend on shooting that many waterfalls this trip down anyway. I did have my circular polarizer which did help out a bit but any exposures more than 3/4 of a second were out of the question, at least on this one.
It kind of speaks for itself, doesn't it?
