As part of the SMILE Project, a follow-up activity for mothers and babysitters was conducted in Salamieh, targeting young children aged 0–3 years and their caregivers. The activity engaged 10 children (4 girls and 6 boys) in Early Childhood Development (ECD) activities, while mothers and babysitters received training on ECD concepts and best practices to support healthy early development at home. This intervention aimed to strengthen caregivers’ knowledge and skills, enhance parent–child interaction, and promote age-appropriate care and stimulation for young children.

This activity is a part of the Sustainable Models for Improved Learning Environments (SMILE) project, which ensures access to early childhood development services in places that suffer from low-quality services, by preparing a community place with qualified staff to ensure the provision of services in a sustainable manner in the selected area. This activity is funded and implemented by AKF.

Bariloche, Río Negro: A father guides his young daughter through an interactive exhibit featuring native Patagonian fauna during their exploration of the region. The scene is captured with a shallow depth of field, focusing sharply on the wooden tiles displaying regional wildlife illustrations like the Andean condor and the huemul. Warm, ambient interior lighting highlights the natural textures of the cabin walls, emphasizing the intimate and educational atmosphere typical of the Argentine Lake District. The father gently touches a blank wooden piece, encouraging his daughter’s curiosity as she observes the rotating puzzle, representing a meaningful moment of discovery for the toddler. This hands-on experience bridges the gap between local environmental education and family travel, showcasing how the region preserves and presents its unique biodiversity to visitors of all ages. Through the lens of the photographers, the image conveys a sense of wonder and connection to the wild landscapes that define this part of the Andes. Cultural nuances are reflected in the thoughtful, tactile approach to teaching children about indigenous species within an authentic lodge setting. Such moments illustrate the importance of immersive learning in fostering a deeper appreciation for the delicate ecosystems found across South America. This image is a collaborative production by Samuel Jeffery and Audrey Bergner for Project 23.
