A family walks to the river, on a New Year's Day excursion, at Hart Park. Bakersfield, CA - USA
On New Year's Day 2021, at the height of the pandemic, I was about to leave the park, when family members exited their vehicles and walked towards me heading for the river. The lens locked onto the masked boy's direct gaze, and the girl's diagonal pivot, relative to the main group's linear approach, was strikingly irregular. The scene resembled a determined pilgrimage of sorts.

The elementary school years are the Golden Age of Childhood because they are a time of slow, even, physical growth and great leaps forward intellectually and socially. It's a time for both girls and boys to play soccer and have a best friend, to go on sleepovers and become ardent fans of a favorite baseball or football team. And it's also a time to ride bikes in the park, eat ice cream on a lazy summer afternoon, have carefree moments with nothing to do and get absorbed in a good book.
What a wonderful time for parents! Children between the ages of six and eleven or twelve can take care of themselves in regard to eating sleeping and hygiene. For the most part they cause little trouble, listen well and most importantly; they like and admire their parents and want to spend time with them. Mom and Dad really are the greatest! Enjoy it, folks. Unfortunately, such admiration is short-lived, soon to be replaced by the uncomfortable but necessary distancing and disdainful scrutiny of every parental word in adolescence, which is just around the corner.
Child psychiatrist, Cal Colarusso M.D. loved raising two boys and a girl through these wonderful years, has fond memories of his own childhood in a much simpler age and has had the privilege of treating scores of boys and girls over the past five decades. In this book he uses his personal experience as a parent, grandfather and therapist to share his knowledge of this age with parents in a relaxed but informative manner. After all, after months and years of sleepless nights, dirty diapers and temper tantrums, parents deserve a Golden Age too.
The Golden Age of Childhood: The Elementary School Years provides parents with an in depth understanding of what makes children of this age tick and provides suggestions on how to promote maximum growth and development.
This book provides information on:
· The emergence of the capacity for friendships
· The development of morality and a strong sense of right and wrong
· The elaboration of sexual identity
· The physical, emotional and cognitive capacities needed to succeed in school
· The nature of play in childhood
· The rhyme and reason behind classical fairy tales and movies of this phase of development
Use the strategies in this book to guide your child through the elementary school years while enjoying the process every step of the way.

My son's hand dominance confuses me. Throws right handed, writes left handed (most of the time), kicks with his right foot... I just don't know.
My wife is right handed, I'm left handed as is my father and paternal grandmother. I was reading somewhere that some kids don't figure out their hand dominance until 5-6 years old. He'll figure it out one of these days...

Parenting and Child Development. Little boy and his mother touching foreheads in a gesture of love. Model released.
I am always looking for new and effective ways to get my children to behave. So I grabbed a couple of voodoo dolls at Marie Laveau's House of Voodoo. They came with a money back guarantee and seemed like a real bargain at just $9.99 each. I decided to use my new disciplinary tools sparingly. For minor misbehavior there was a quick stick with a pin. For something really bad, I would set the foot on fire. After a week my kids were no better behaved and all that was left of the voodoo dolls was two tiny piles of ashes. The ashes were swept into an envelope and mailed to Mrs. Laveau with my respectful request for a refund. I dropped the letter off at the post office on my way to the lumber store to buy wood for a paddle.

I took this of my Children's book collection that I keep in my preschool classroom. I teach Pre-K.
I have been collecting Children's books for years now. I have many Green Tiger Press books that are out of print.
Many books I buy because I love the illustrations.
I also collect fairy and fantasy books.
I organize my books into these blue book bins that have a plastic sleeve on the side of the box to put a label. I organize the books by theme and also by authors. The books that are just general read aloud books go on my smaller bookshelf. I also have books that are sets together. ie. Curious George, The Berenstain Bears, Clifford, Dr. Seuss, Little Critters etc.
I am a storyteller and I also have many puppets. I also have a collection of books on cassette and CD. Those are stored in the basket.
I have a collection of children's books from my childhood and ones that I have collected over the years.

Believe it or not, there are answers, and with a little humor, plenty of understanding, and 50 years’ experience, eminent authority in the field of development, child psychiatrist, and master clinician Cal Colarusso, M.D. will ease your mind, answer your questions and provide step-by-step guides that will not only reassure your frazzled parent mind, but also make your most important job – raising your child – a little easier.

Amazon Review:
5.0 out of 5 stars The Terrible Twos..., October 3, 2011
By eBook Fan "Love to read! Happy to review!" (Midwest, USA) - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Guiding Your Toddler's Development: Eating, Sleeping, Toilet Training, and More (Kindle Edition)
"From a parent who's recently been through raising a toddler... three is worse than two. At three they're more independant and devioiusly smart... they know how to push mom and dad's buttons!"
"Interesting book. I know first hand how frustrating it can be with a toddler. The no's. The tantrums for seemingly no reason. The frustration to communicate. On the other hand, as nuts as these kids can drive you, they're a lot of fun. My daughter, for example, at the age of two, argued with me that the word "horray" is actually "parade." So now we have a family joke and say "PARADE!" when we're happy about something."
"The book is short and sweet and has facts about what's happening with your child. It's nice to understand that they're going through an enormous amount of change in a very short time. Easy read... saves time for the parent of a toddler who is always on the run!"

DIY baby scan (Thanks to Alan and Carol for use of the scan).
You can save time doing your own scan:
1. Mother-to-be to strip off to the waist (bra may be kept on)
2. Lay the mother gently on top of a photocopier bump facing down. The OCE 3055 model is ideal.
3. Place an X-ray tray with loaded X-ray film onto the mothers back.
4. Cover the tray with powerful ring magnets.
5. Earth/ground the mother with a length of wire going from the mother to an object such a water pipe. The big toe is an ideal place. Avoid using the nipples.
6. Press print on the photocopier and discard the paper copy when it comes out.
7. Process the Xray film using the normal means.
Disclaimer: Not to be taken seriously :-) I will not be held responsible if any problems arise by people trying this out for themselves. Photocoping your butt is safer :-)
