The Golden-chevroned Tanager is well named for its bright yellow shoulder patch, which marks the species out as undoubtedly the most attractive of the lowland group of Thraupis tanagers. It is endemic to southeast Brazil, where it is reasonably common, but undoubtedly outnumbered by the sympatric Palm Tanager (Thraupis palmarum) and the Sayaca Tanager (Thraupis sayaca), both of which possess far more uniform plumage than the Golden-chevroned Tanager, which in contrast most resembles the exclusively Andean-distributed Blue-capped Tanager (Thraupis cyanocephala) in morphology. The present species is generally fairly common in its reasonably wide range in the Atlantic Forest from southern Bahia to Santa Catarina, and is usually conspicuous and easily observed, like its congenerics. This little guy here is shining and in full colors. However he lost the feathers around his eyes, which gives a special "touch".

“Simplicity, patience, compassion.

These three are your greatest treasures.

Simple in actions and thoughts, you return to the source of being.

Patient with both friends and enemies,

you accord with the way things are.

Compassionate toward yourself,

Golden-chevroned Tanager has a scientific name that suggests an ornate plumage, and it fits the bill. The golden ‘chevrons’ on the wings are particularly striking (again, as suggested in the common name). This species is almost entirely restricted to southeast Brazil. My first sightings of Golden-chevroned Tanager, including this individual, were at the excellent base of Casa Tukani in the small city of Guapimirim in Rio de Janeiro State. I was fortunate to see this colourful tanager on most days of my trip.

A small parakeet, about 8–9 inches in length, native to South America with a range extending from eastern Brazil to northern Argentina. It feeds primarily on fruits, seeds, and nectar, often seen foraging in flocks.

It gives a different view of the wonderful colours of this species. This sighting was at Casa Tukani in the small city of Guapimirim, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil.
