The Chestnut-naped Antpitta is a typical ground-dwelling Grallaria, although it sings from a low perch, and which strongly prefers bamboo thickets in humid montane forest at 1900 to 3150 m. Its geographical range extends from north-central Colombia to northernmost Peru. As is typical of the Grallariidae, very little has been published to date concerning this species’ ecology, although the eggs have been described, and the Chestnut-naped Antpitta is presumably a fairly strict insectivore. Three species of the Chestnut-naped Antpitta are recognized and these differ principally in their crown colour and the intensity of the saturation to the underparts, although there are also some differences in their vocalizations. The basic plumage pattern, common to all three, is of gray underparts with a darker face, and rufous-brown upperparts, usually brightest and most rufescent over the crown and nape. doi.org/10.2173/bow.chnant1.01

Each Spring, on the Sunday closest to 11th May, people come from all over London and the South East to join in the local tradition of celebrating the blossom on the magnificent horse chestnut trees in Bushy Park.

The tradition originated in the mid-19th Century and continued until World War II. It was revived in 1993.

Chestnut Sunday has evolved through its long history but the central feature is a parade down Chestnut Avenue.

The photo shows the horse leading the parade and some of the crowds and the blossom on one of the chestnut trees.

Decided to take a slightly different editing style with this Chestnut sided warbler - a very patient bird for me. Just sat there while I pressed the shutter!

By the time I made it to Magee Marsh, Ohio, most of the migrating songbirds must have already passed through (or never arrived). There were so few birds compared to previous years, but there were a lot of photographers : )

This fattened Chestnut-sided Warbler waited long enough for me to get two pictures of him, and then he flitted into the dense undergrowth. He may remain in northern Ohio, or continue to Michigan or to southern Canada.

Endemic to the southern Atlantic Forest, the stunningly attractive and virtually unmistakable Chestnut-backed Tanager occurs from São Paulo south to Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil, as well as more narrowly ranging into adjacent northeast Argentina, Uruguay, and southeast Paraguay. At least formerly, this species was often treated as being conspecific with the Black-backed Tanager (Tangara peruviana), as the two were believed to represent nothing more than color morphs. They are only really separable in male plumage; as their names suggest, it is the color of the mantle, black in Tangara peruviana, and coppery rufous in Tangara preciosa, which is key to their identification. The present species is found in mature forest, perhaps especially near its borders, to at least 1000 m, and appears to show some preference for areas with a relative abundance of Araucaria (monkey-puzzle) trees. The Chestnut-backed Tanager is typically found in pairs, often within mixed-species flocks of insectivores.

"You are like a chestnut burr, prickly outside, but silky-soft within, and a sweet kernel, if one can only get at it. Love will make you show your heart some day, and then the rough burr will fall off." Louisa May Alcott

Chestnut Teal (Anas castanea) female male

It was lovely to see some Chestnut Teals in Skeleton Creek on Saturday. Mrs is on the left here.

It looks to me that this is a male chestnut teal who is losing his

breeding plumage.

He was part of a couple who had 4 ducklings which is very late in the breeding season.
