Horse chestnut is the official flower of... either all of Ukraine or just Kiev. And right now they're blooming and they're fucking everywhere. Its pretty awesome. At least i find it nifty, because we don't have them in NYC. I've seen chestnut trees in NY on maybe two occasions - once in central park, and one time on the A train by Rockaway Blvd. We're totally missing out on the spiffy cone flowers.
Here's a chestnut that just fell off my tree in my backyard (October 11, 2009, Columbus day weekend). They are very tender and delicious! Here's how to cook them: make a little cross with a sharp knife and bake for 20 minutes. You'll then be able to peel the skin off.
Male Chestnut-sided Warbler was singing and foraging along the road near my house. He was very co-operative, staying very low in the trees. I love these warblers, they are one of the more common ones around my house.

Chestnut Tree, Edinburgh, Scotland... such a lovely thing when evening sunlight slashes through trees.
yay this is my 1st Chestnut!!! does happy dance =) i was delighted to see this little warbler , ive been hunting for one for 2 years now. i actually found it in my yard of all places feeding in trees alongside the creek bank. im not sure if this is a male in non breeding plumage or a female. either way im so very thankful for the series of shots and i hope its still hanging around my yard in the am "so maybe i can get a closer photo opp!*
It looks like being a good conker year if this horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) tree is anything to go by.

This photo of a Chestnut-breasted Mannikin (Lonchura castaneothroax) was taken near Bibra Lake in Western Australia. The birds are normally found in the Kimberley region of WA, across the top-end of the NT, through northern Queensland and down the east coast to around Sydney. Finding these birds in southern WA would indicate that they have probably escaped, or been let loose, from an aviary.

Some seeds of Castanea sativa (chestnut) were collected in December 2011 during our visit to the "castaño santo" (holy chestnut) in Istán, Málaga, and brought at home to sow them. Three months later seedlings emerged.
