Hummelstown-native Chef Kurt Wewer has been immersed in the culinary world since he was 5. Growing up in an Italian family with a rich culinary heritage, Chef Wewer developed his passion for cooking early on. His childhood was spent hunting, foraging, and fishing. His family always had incredible Italian recipes for the fresh ingredients they found, such as trout, venison, and mushrooms.
For the past decade, Chef Wewer has been an integral part of the PA Farm Show’s Culinary Connection, performing cooking demonstrations as a guest chef. One of Chef Wewer's most memorable moments was when he was in a cooking competition with his son and daughter. Competing against other chefs and their children, his kids, aged around 8 to 10, performed remarkably and secured a second-place finish. He described the experience as "amazing."
Among the various events at the farm show, Chef Wewer's favorite is Mushroom Day. The generous donations from local producers result in an impressive variety of mushrooms, making it a highlight for him each year.
When asked how he incorporates locally sourced ingredients into his recipes at the Farm Show, Chef Wewer shared his journey. In 2013, he became the Executive Chef at The Garlic Poet Restaurant and Bar, the first true farm-to-table restaurant in central Pennsylvania. With 18 taps of locally produced Pennsylvania beer on tap, he established a network of small local producers, providing everything from mushrooms to bee pollen, maple syrup to microgreens. Since 2013, he has continued to support and promote these local producers.
