The Harvest Brunch at Danforth Inn in Portland Maine featured Chef Carmen Gonzalez of New York. A Puerto Rican native, Chef Carmen combines the flavors of her heritage with her love for Maine ingredients. She offered a starter of Maine Lobster with Key Lime Mayonnaise and Avocado Relish on Tostones, Sweet Plantain and Guisado of Peekytoe Crabmeat Piononos. Then table service included three types of fried root chips (Plantain, Yuca and Sweet Potato) with a Smoked Haddock Spread, Apple and Mango Fritters, Maine Cod Eggs Benedict with Shredded Yautia and Green Banana Pancakes, Oyster, Sausage and Roasted Tomato Casserole with Yuca and Roasted Garlic Mofongo, Pulled Pork and Braised Pork Belly with Sweet Plantain Hash with Fried Quail Egg. Dessert was a trio of Silver Dollar Pancakes with Warm Green Papaya Salad, Crispy Churros dusted with Cinnamon Sugar and a Warm Chocolate Drizzle and Torrejas with Fresh Maine Pears and Requeson. There were wines paired with the courses. It was fabulous and delicious!

"People I Met Today"

Saturdays I stay away from people, so the only person I 'met' was my son, playing Chef. His favourite shows are "Better Homes & Gardens" and "Ready Steady Cook" ( the UK version ).

yeah, I know.

Here he is gathering parsley for dinner.

Evacuated after a 6.0 earthquake in Mexico City, Chefs from the Sheraton Centro Histórico head back to work!

Opened in December 1983 this was 1 of 2 Little Chefs to open in 5 month on the A38 between Exeter and Plymouth. (Buckfastleigh was the other). It sat just off the sliproad to Smithaleigh on the edge of the village, so just a little off the A38, in a building which looks to have been a house or pub previously. However, despite being a little hidden and really difficult to access from the northbound side, it was able to put up a nice, big light up totem to best snare the southbound motorists and it seemed to work. It outlived Buckfastleigh and soldiered on until 2012 when it became one of around 70 sites to be culled in a large cost cutting exercise.

Today it has been rejuvinated as Concept House, an office development, retaining the same building and the trademark minimilk car park lights

Little Chef Bickerstaffe started life as a Kelly's Kitchen restaurant before Kelly's were taken over by Forte in 1989/90 and all the restaurants rebranded as Little Chef. An ex-Kelly's branch has several distinct features - cottage-style windows, an overhanging roof supported by metal pillars and a large brick-built funnel part of which protrudes from the side wall. Usually the funnel carried the logo for the restaurant too.

Again this was a well located restaurant, It was both visible and accessible from the M58 motorway, itself services-free, and beside a busy petrol station and major north-south route. However, the decision was taken to close it in Jan/ Feb 2012. It is believed that McDonalds are interested in the site but, as yet, nobody has re-opened it
