Little Chef Saughall opened in 1988/89 and pretty much had the winning formula for a successful site. It was off a roundabout, at a junction, on a busy dual carriageway. It was therefore visible for miles and accessible by many. It did well and even had a Burger King too! However, in recent years the stretch of the A494 it serves has been upgraded and the roundabout replaced by a split level junction. This means that the traffic, that used to pass it is now largely taken away which I can only assume had a devastating effect on trade. As a result, Saughall closed in September 2012 and is still empty

Chef Cristiano Bassani, owner of the popular Bapi Ristorante in Arlington Heights, opens Big Chef Burgers, a new gourmet burger and pizza restaurant in Schaumburg, Ill on January 6. Located at 1602 E. Algonquin Rd. (just east of Meacham Rd.) (telephone: 847-221-8539; www.bigchefburgers.com), Big Chef Burgers is a casual and relaxed full-service restaurant that features fresh gourmet burgers, wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, homemade gelato milkshakes, artisan salads and desserts. Full bar service and private dining is available.

Balhaldie north (A9) seating area. Given that Little Chef has has so many owners with so many different ideas many sites end up sporting lots of bits from different eras. Balhaldie North is no exception. The tables and chairs from the 80s, the lightshades and carpet from the 90s and the downlighters and cream paint from the 00s. Seemed pretty well cared for though.

Chez Rguig Hassan (or No. 31, Jamaa El-Fna) is one of the better stalls, and it's even been written up in Foodspotting.
Well, I'm not sure if he was the chef, as he seemed to spend most of his time glowering at the kids who were finishing off the remains of the patrons' food after they had finished.

The interior of Haydock Little Chef. Still looks pretty fresh after its "New Choices" makeover in 2001/2. For Choices, owners of the time, Compass, decided to give Little Chef access to a greater range of brands under one roof at some of the Little Chef sites. These included Wiseguys Pizza, Cafe Ritazza, Harry Ramsdens and Upper Crust. The restaurant interiors also got a makeover with new tables, chairs, servery, wooden blinds and white-painted walls inside. It was another way to attract younger customers and evening diners. By 2002, Compass had sold Little Chef on to the Canadians and taken their brands out leaving only the Little Chef and Burger King. BK later closed but is currently being reinstated and due to open in December 2013.
The "Choices" makeover shows quite nicely how a Little Chef interior can be sympathetically updated without the need for a complete overhaul, yet still staying true to the brand.
For all of you who aren't that fond of Jar Jar Binks (myself included) Chef Vader serves him BBQ'd with an apple in his mouth :-)
