Active Assignment Weekly - Norman Rockwell Style

AAW - Jan. 16-23, 2023.

Tried to capture a contemporary grocery store scene to compare with the vintage store scene.

Cropped and softened the image.

NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley are seen after suit-up in the Neil A. Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building on a monitor inside firing room four prior to departing for Launch Complex 39A, Saturday, May 30, 2020, in the Launch Control Center at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 mission is the first launch with astronauts of the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket to the International Space Station as part of the agency’s Commercial Crew Program. The test flight serves as an end-to-end demonstration of SpaceX’s crew transportation system. Behnken and Hurley launched at 3:22 p.m. EDT on Saturday, May 30, from Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center. A new era of human spaceflight is set to begin as American astronauts once again launch on an American rocket from American soil to low-Earth orbit for the first time since the conclusion of the Space Shuttle Program in 2011. that's a sweet cupcake.

Although the 2022 Dollar Tree photo tour was only 3 photos long, the store was worth the revisit to see any changes made in the past year. Some of it weren't for the better, some were. The older checkstands remained for the most part. Dollar Tree needs to start paying their workers better. This was it for most of the Value Center photo tour.

The shopping center this Marsh store was opened in was built in 1957, so it is possible that this Marsh location was opened then. The first UPC / barcode was scanned in this store on June 26th, 1974.

This Marsh supermarket is one of the last 15 Marsh locations in operation. This store was bought by Fresh Encounter in June and, at least for the time being, retains the Marsh name. Taken July 7th, 2017...

Sherwood Centre in Troy, Ohio was built in 1957.

The Orion Artemis I spacecraft arrived at NASA's Kennedy Space Center on March 25, 2020 after going through rigorous environmental training at NASA's Plum Brook Station. At the Kennedy Operations and Checkout building, the spacecraft was rotated to a vertical position and then lifted into the Final Assembly and System Test (FAST) cell workstation on March 30. Yellow protection panels that were temporarily installed on the crew module adapter during the environmental testing are in the process of being removed. The spacecraft is now being prepared for post-shipping checkout testing.

WEEK 24 – RRT, Greenville Kmart

A look at the store's checkouts now, as we prepare to leave. A typical view of this area would be devoid of all those windows, as mentioned previously: while I can certainly understand why they were removed from a safety perspective (in response to this incident), it left the front ends of many Kmart stores bleak. True, many stores have gone for windowless front ends over the years to increase salesfloor space, but (as usual) I think Kmart executed that concept a little more poorly than the rest...

This supermarket in Eaton, Ohio was built in 1968 as a different store, was bought by Marsh in 1987, and got expanded in 1988. This Marsh supermarket is one of only 15 Marsh locations still in operation as of Summer 2017. This store was bought by Fresh Encounter in June 2017. Also, this grocery store is in an odd area; it is on a side street rather than a major road. It also suprised me that this location is open 24 hours.

WEEK 50 – Wolfchase Sears Closing, Set XII (UL)

As we were checking out with our purchase, I took the opportunity to grab this shot of the Sears logo tower element rising from the register counter. Just as we saw on the lower level, this checkout features a notice concerning acceptable returns – normally liquidations say “all sales final, no returns” (as did this one – see the yellow sign at bottom left!), but apparently due to the bankruptcy some returns could technically be accepted, albeit with very specific terms and conditions. Below that is a similar note about Lands’ End returns.

A quick glimpse at this store's previous self checkouts; only 8 of them at the time.. These have now been replaced with new Scan & Go-branded self checkouts in the vein of the North Port store. Picture coming soon.

Store 721. This store originally opened on March 1, 1995 and relocated from an older Division 1 store at US-41 and Cochran Boulevard, which originally opened in 1985. That location has since been subdivided into Staples, Big Lots, and Books-a-Million.

WEEK 27 – College Town Kroger (II)

A peek from over one of the self-checkout units reveals this millennium store, like the Starkville one, is using script décor checkout lights. I'm unclear if this is what either store started with, or whether they both switched to these later on, but it seems to me that the millennium checkout lights are rarities now either way.

Note that the Guest Care and Money Services sign is covering up an Ole Miss banner: another reason to believe those signs aren't original (see comments at that link).

San Leandro, California

This store opened as a Big Bear supermarket in December 1994. Bear Bear closed on January 18th, 1994 (along with the rest of the chain) and reopened as Giant Eagle on February 8th, 2004. The store was fairly small, at only 35,192 square feet. The store was remodeled by Giant Eagle, but besides the signs and paintjob the store looked a lot like a Big Bear still. Oddly enough, this store didn't even have a pharmacy; I wonder if it did at some point in the past. The grocery store closed on March, 4th, 2017, but the State Liquor Agency remains open (at least for some time).

This photo was taken on March 4th, the final day of the store.

NASA’s SpaceX Crew-6 astronauts wave after walking out of the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on March 1, 2023. From left are Andrey Fedyaev, Roscosmos cosmonaut and mission specialist; NASA astronaut Warren Hoburg, pilot; NASA astronaut Stephen Bowen, spacecraft commander; and Sultan Alneyadi, UAE (United Arab Emirates) astronaut and mission specialist. They will board two Tesla vehicles for the trip to Kennedy’s Launch Complex 39A, where they will launch to the International Space Station aboard SpaceX’s Dragon Endeavour spacecraft. Launch is targeted for 12:34 a.m. EST on March 2 from Launch Complex 39A. Crew-6 is the sixth crew rotation mission with SpaceX to the station, and the seventh flight of Dragon with people as part of the agency’s Commercial Crew Program. Photo credit: NASA/Kim Shiflett

Right in front of the escalators is a bank of express checkouts, which don't seem to get much use, and which (rather strangely) have register lights without numbers on them. In the background is the store's Seahawks section, as well as some random other clothing displays.

A 175,000 square foot Super Kmart store opened here on September 10, 1997. Super Kmart closed in 2003 then was demolished for an Ikea store. The 311,000 square foot Ikea store opened in June 7, 2006, but is currently undergoing a 44,000 square foot expansion scheduled to be completed in Summer of 2015. Another interesting tidbit is that this store has over 4,000 solar panels on its roof and will have nearly 5,000 when the expansion is complete.
