Inside the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building high bay at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, in preparation for installation on the Artemis I spacecraft, technicians have extended one of the Artemis I solar array wings for inspection on Sept. 10, 2020, to confirm that it unfurled properly and all of the mechanisms functioned as expected. The solar array is one of four panels that will generate 11 kilowatts of power and span about 63 feet. The array is a component of Orion’s service module, which is provided by the European Space Agency and built by Airbus Defence and Space to supply Orion’s power, propulsion, air and water. The first in a series of increasingly complex missions, Artemis I will test the Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System as an integrated system ahead of crewed flights to the Moon. Under the Artemis program, NASA will land the first woman and the next man on the Moon in 2024.

Although the 2022 Dollar Tree photo tour was only 3 photos long, the store was worth the revisit to see any changes made in the past year. Some of it weren't for the better, some were. The older checkstands remained for the most part. Dollar Tree needs to start paying their workers better. This was it for most of the Value Center photo tour.

Dollar Tree, opened mid-1990s, formerly Food Town/Lion, opened 1976, closed/moved 1993, 2215 North Cannon Boulevard, Kannapolis, North Carolina

Checkouts. Usually the merchandise area up front is usually beach stuff. Black section on the wall is the Avis rent-a-car desk.

This store opened as a Big Bear supermarket in December 1994. Bear Bear closed on January 18th, 1994 (along with the rest of the chain) and reopened as Giant Eagle on February 8th, 2004. The store was fairly small, at only 35,192 square feet. The store was remodeled by Giant Eagle, but besides the signs and paintjob the store looked a lot like a Big Bear still. Oddly enough, this store didn't even have a pharmacy; I wonder if it did at some point in the past. The grocery store closed on March, 4th, 2017, but the State Liquor Agency remains open (at least for some time).

This photo was taken on March 4th, the final day of the store.

Right in front of the escalators is a bank of express checkouts, which don't seem to get much use, and which (rather strangely) have register lights without numbers on them. In the background is the store's Seahawks section, as well as some random other clothing displays.

WEEK 27 – College Town Kroger (II)

A peek from over one of the self-checkout units reveals this millennium store, like the Starkville one, is using script décor checkout lights. I'm unclear if this is what either store started with, or whether they both switched to these later on, but it seems to me that the millennium checkout lights are rarities now either way.

Note that the Guest Care and Money Services sign is covering up an Ole Miss banner: another reason to believe those signs aren't original (see comments at that link).

A 175,000 square foot Super Kmart store opened here on September 10, 1997. Super Kmart closed in 2003 then was demolished for an Ikea store. The 311,000 square foot Ikea store opened in June 7, 2006, but is currently undergoing a 44,000 square foot expansion scheduled to be completed in Summer of 2015. Another interesting tidbit is that this store has over 4,000 solar panels on its roof and will have nearly 5,000 when the expansion is complete.

The site's design is deceivingly simple, yet full of information. It's attention-grabbing without the clutter of competing elements, and it does well with a white and light grey color scheme. But it's the design details that make this such an amazing website. Go ahead, check it out (pun intended) for yourself.

People are in line to pick up their stuff.

Looking across the front end of marlton NJ Super Fresh from the Manager's office in November 1991. This was just after IBM scanning check-outs were installed, replacing the original NCR 255 system. The number of check-outs was reduced from nine to six. The area in the distance where the removed check-outs were became an "aisle of value" promotional item alcove. The next remodel the office and courtesy counter was moved there.

Something you don't see much anymore - someone using a pay telephone, or even a pay phone in a store or anywhere for that matter.

The back entrance to the store used to have a couple lonely checkouts -- specifically, four self-checkouts and the abandoned-looking register 8. Sadly, the entrance closed recently, in one of the rare cases that Kroger admitted to changing something due to theft. (Looking through the Capitol Hill Seattle Blog archives for QFC results in a lot of articles about theft and the resulting, anti-consumer actions that Kroger keeps taking and somehow finding another justification for, so this is quite surprising...)

The technique for the front glass is a bit flimsy but works good enough, The glass has side supports exactly as thick as the bracket. Because of that, the 2x3 plate can hold the glass in place.

Chalk this one up to being yet another site that is very "Apple-like"

in nature. I like the overall design, the buttons and link graphics,

as well as the list of features, but I see a little room for

improvement here as well.
