Spearfish Falls was actually one of the most popular tourist stops in the northern Black Hills around the beginning of the 19th century when a Burlington Railroad line took passengers directly over it, parts of which can still be found on the trail today. The trail to this 47 ft waterfall starts at the parking lot for the Latchstring Restaurant and is roughly 3/4 in length. Note that while the path to the left is easy, the one to the right of the restaurant is more difficult but does include a sweet traverse over an old metal walking bridge. Interestingly enough, in 1917, this waterfall was actually turned off for awhile as water was diverted from Spearfish Creek to a nearby hydroelectric plant that helped power operations at Homestake Gold Mine until November 17, 2003. For this reason, Spearfish Falls is one of the lesser-known waterfalls that often gets passed by even today.

If you don’t have much time to hike while you are visiting Spearfish Canyon, I would encourage you to put this one high on your list. The trail is rated as moderate. The total hike is 1.5 miles. I love hiking this any time of year. The trail is pretty easy to find. The path is right behind the Latchstring Inn. The trail has been reworked recently. It is no longer a loop trail, the only access point is just north of the restaurant. The path is nice and wide and should be manageable by most people that can walk moderate inclines. Just take your time and soak in the beauty of the canyon floor. The waterfall is so beautiful, you’ll want to hangout and enjoy it for awhile. This is just one of the waterfalls of Spearfish Canyon worth visiting. There is plenty of hiking in the area. Just on the other side of the road is Roughlock Falls Nature Trail. While I like hiking this area all year long, it is definitely one of my favorite fall hikes in the Black Hills. And, if you are staying in Spearfish, be sure to checkout the Lookout Mountain Hiking trails if you want a longer hike.

Milky Way over historic Simpson Springs Pony Express Station, Utah.
Both are single exposures. My simplified star trails technique is explained on page 62 of my eBook. No need to stack hundreds of exposures, like other complicated star trail methods. All processing is done in-camera, using the LENR mode (Long Exposure Noise Reduction), rather than having to do post processing stacking afterwards on your computer — joining together hundreds of single exposures into circling trails!
TECHNIQUE & EXIF: Canon 6D (H-alpha modified) + Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 @ 15mm • LEFT: Single exposure, 15 sec, f/2.8, ISO 8000 • RIGHT: Star Trails. one exposure @ 2520 seconds (42 minutes), f/5.0, ISO 160, using LENR mode.
My eBook, Milky Way NightScapes, gives extensive details on my style of starry night landscape photography. Four chapters cover planning, scouting, forecasting star/landscape alignment, light painting, shooting techniques and post processing. “Finding Darkness in Rural America” is a new book I’m working on. I photographed this circa 1915 wooden granary in central Utah last week. Unlike today's round silos made of corrugated steel, the 100 year-old style of granary often looked like an unfinished building, with the framework on the outside for strength, and smooth horizontal planking on the inside to hold the grain. This was taken in the Gwalia Supply Company Store about 1880.
That's to say it was taken in a reconstruction of the original store found in St. Fagan's National History Museum, just outside Cardiff.

This museum contains many reconstructed buildings, of all ages, taken from all over Wales and rebuilt as the originals, in the grounds of St Fagan's Castle.
It's a fascinating way to spend a day.
But I couldn't find the checkout and there was no-one behind the counter.
Also thanks to my friend nicolas_gent for the use (and abuse) of his texture.
Sandhil Cranes fly out of one of there overnight ponds, that they use to avoid predators. They will spend the day in the surrounding fields foraging for food. Contrary to what I thought, New Mexico was very very cold over night and in the early mornings. The water had frozen around some of the cranes legs.

While out for a drive this past Sunday, I was looking for Snowy Owls. I came across this Great Horned Owl that was sitting in the snow some distance off the road...
I was able to get a few shots before he hopped away some distance.... much to my surprise he did not fly away...
I pursued and got closer and a few more shots and closer yet again and a few more shots...
He would walk or hop away a little distance and then turn and look at me or sit down in the snow and watch me...
I was able to get quite close, within 20 feet, all the while taking a few more shots...
Eventually he tried to fly off and that is when it became apparent that something was not quite right... it appeared that one of his wings was damaged... He would fly up in the air about 20 feet and then come back down 20 ro 30 feet away...
I continued to get a few more shots, while at the same time trying to get closer to see if he really was hurt...
He would only let me get about 20 feet away before trying to fly off... after doing this a couple of times I decided that it was time to leave him be since there was no way I could get close to him and I had nothing in terms of anything to help me try and capture him...
The next day I made the decision to go back out there with my wife, determined to catch him if I could to get him to a rehabilitation centre... fortunately he was still in the same area and we were able to catch him with little effort...
He is now a resident at the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre in Ile-de-Chens Manitoba, where he is begining to recover from a broken Ulna (wing bone)... the staff at the rehabilitation centre are confident that he will make a full recovery in two to three months time...
