I never got a chance to put this planter away. We have had so much snow this year, when I looked in the backyard I saw all the snow piled in the planter with the spikes poking out I thought I have to get this shot.

I don't believe in destiny
Or the guiding hand of fate
I don't believe in forever
Or love as a mystical state
I don't believe in the stars or the planets
Or angels watching from above
But I believe there's a ghost of a chance we can find someone to love
And make it last...

"Chance Encounter" was a piece of work done in the 60's in Flora's private collection. It was one of the original pieces of art that was featured in the Jim Flora exhibit.
Just look at the colors. It was even better in person.
Bokskogen, Sweden.
Fact:
After over two hundred years of absence the Wild Boar has made a strong return into the Swedish fauna.
Wild boar was once hunted to extinction, but was reintroduced in captivity. After several escapes during the 1970’s – and 1980’s, the wild population has increased in various parts of southern Sweden and is now estimated to over 300,000 and is still growing.
Wild boar are very shy animals and rarely seen in daylight.
The best chances to see them is at dusk or dawn when they visit farmers fields in search of food.
Wild boars are considered to be even more dangerous than bears.
Equipped with thick, razor-sharp tusks, and a razor-sharp mind (hogs are the 4th most intelligent animal in the world) a wild boar can weigh almost 300 kg and exhibit extremely aggressive and unpredictable behaviour.
W9 and I just had a new and colorful bird under our belt: The Summer Tanager. Los Angeles was being showered by something called "rain." Were the planets beginning to align? Was the Moon in the 7th house?
Packing the typical gear, we headed out to the South Coast Botanic Garden to find the reported Green-tailed Towhee. We have wanted this bird for years but were not willing to go to sketchy areas unless Jerry was with us. So this was our chance to nail this bird. And the garden is lovely! Nice clean bathrooms! Flush toilets! Free parking!
No sooner do we go into the Children's Garden (I know!) where the bird was reported seen than BINGO. The target bird is there! And singing his pants off! We can't believe our luck!!!!! If only it was this easy. Easy peasy. We are firing off shots and breathing ... all is right with the universe. No one is hungry, tired, lonely, or lost. Focus now. Get the bird. Get the shot. We have time to set up our camp stools.
And then it happens. Two parents with cameras and a child in tow zero in on us. It will be "what are you looking at?" time. (After all, we were in the “Children’s Garden.”) It is a lifer bird for us both. To make the situation worse, the child, a bit older than a toddler, has a camera equipped with a sizable lens. Not a bridge camera. I think it's a Nikon, but I'm doing that semi squeeze my eyes shut thing so that I don't take in any more information.
The trio is heading our way. My brain is shrieking Nooooooooooooo. The father is explaining things to the child about “background.” They stay a reasonable distance away but that's not good enough. With this camera hog of a bird we can just try to draw the family away. Try to get them distracted or better yet, bored.
W9 and I leave this posing beauty and whisper "We'll be back, my love. Wait for us."
But here's how it breaks down. The family sets up camp. We sneak back to check. We try shooting in an area close by with hummers. Who doesn't like hummers???? The mascot and symbol of this Botanic Garden! It’s almost working. The family moves closer to us. They aren't rude or pushy but I have no faith that they can resist the pull ... W9's monopod and all...
After an eternity they move on. We dive back in to get the Green-tailed Towhee. But now the little fart wants nothing to do with us. W9 tracks him, finds him. He briefly visited a puddle and then bolted. W9 finds him again, but this time he’s under bushes, foraging in the shadows. What the hell happened to the showy diva we met earlier when we arrived at the garden party???
So, allow me to present our latest lifer bird.
"There’s nothing quite like the color that gives the Green-tailed Towhee its name—a deep olive lightening to yellow-green on the edges of the wings and tail. Set off by a gray chest, white throat, and rufous crown, this large sparrow is a colorful resident of the West’s shrubby mountainsides and sagebrush expanses—if you can see one. They spend their time scratching at leaf litter under dense cover, occasionally popping into view to whistle a song or give a querulous mewing call." allaboutboids

Without our past
We would never survive

So you know what you can do if you dont like what you see
Kiss me, I'm Irish
I am the wild rover
My eyes they are smiling
And I'm seldom sober
I like my whiskey
And I love to dance
So if youre feeling as lucky as me, take a chance
And kiss me I'm Irish
My heart beats a jig
And me blood, it flows green
I've been a rogue and a rambler
From ocean to sea
And I like a Bevy
Now and then this I'll never deny
But I only drink on the days of the week that end with a 'y'
I'm no saint I'm no sinner
Of that theres no doubt
I'll tell you the truth
I am the one that your grandmother warned you about
Kiss me, I'm Irish

And I'm seldom sober

Flashback Friday.
ca. mid-late 1980s.
Mush was not really our dog, but he did live with us off and on for a while. We met while Chance was still a puppy and Mush's person at the time was my cabinmate. We shared a dry cabin, no phone, no electric and about a tenth of a mile off the one lane, pothole filled, dead end dirt road. Judy had rescued him from a remote town, Kotzebue, above the Arctic Circle. People often talk about rescuing dogs, but Mush and Judy’s story is unique and a very literal rescue.
Judy was living in “Kotz” doing, if I’m not mistaken, graduate work. I’m sure she had seen Mush before, but one day while he was harnessed and in team, she heard yelling; his owner pulled a gun and was about to shoot him dead. Evidently Mush was a fighter and was not receptive to being told what to do by this person. This method of training, shooting a dog in harness while his teammates look on was meant as a lesson to the other dogs that they better behave. Truly misguided and cruel – “training” through fear and intimidation. But things were different in the bush and some people could not afford to keep a dog that not only did not perform, but also harmed other dogs in the team.
Judy intervened, “don’t shoot that dog!” And the person reluctantly acquiesced, warned her about his behavior, and said, “get him the hell out of here.” (or something to that effect).
Judy returned to Fairbanks for University studies (where we met and became roommates), of course she loved that dog with all her heart, with all her being, and he no doubt loved her as well, realizing maybe not that she saved his life, but that she got him away from a bad person.
It was said that Mush was ½ wolf. I usually take such claims with a grain of salt, but with Mush I believed it. Huskies can be very aloof, and arguably most or all of them can be traced to some wolf heritage, but Mush was the most aloof dog that I have ever experienced. Also, he did not like men, any wonder. But he tolerated me and eventually we became as close as he would allow. Later Lenore came around and she fell for him and he preferred to live with her in her little cabin. He provided her security and comfort. But I jumped ahead a bit.
Judy and Mush moved in when Chance was still a young pup, he was not aggressive with the rambunctious puppy, but as a matter of training and demonstrating who was boss, he would sit with seemingly all his weight (he was big) on Chance the pup. Chance learned. In his time with me Mush was a strong freight dog, helping haul firewood locally and supplies out to my remote cabin site. I even named a stretch of trail after him, “Mush’s Misery,” as it was a long uphill slog and he would put his head down, lean into his harness and march ahead without complaint.
Later Mush disappeared and some weeks or months later I was surprised to see him at a friends cabin. This was not near where Lenore or I had lived. The friend was surprised that I knew him, as surprised as I was to find him living with her. She said he just appeared on her porch one day and stayed, as if he lived there. She was involved in a separation and felt alone and vulnerable too in that place. She was convinced that Mush sensed this, and intentionally appeared to protect her and provide comfort. They had not met before. I didn’t really feel like it was my choice, so he stayed. Eventually he disappeared from her too, and that’s all we know.
In then end, we only regret the chances we didn't take.
Have a great new week everyone.

CN L517 crosses the Arcola high bridge in a rare daylight appearance. After missing the run in October, I thought that would be it for daylight runs this year. Thankfully, I was proven wrong. I got word of this train early in the morning, and got to Arcola as soon as possible. I was the only one down there for a long while, but knew the train was getting closer when more railfans started showing up. After waiting a couple hours, the horn was blown and the train headed over the half mile long bridge. It was great to finally shoot a train going over this structure.
The Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) is one of a handful of butterfly species that overwinters as an adult butterfly (rather than egg, larva, or chrysalis). It emerges from hibernation in early spring and can be seen flying high and strong in February or March on hilltops where the males look for females. It is difficult to find this butterfly by late spring, but a new generation emerges in early summer.
The Mourning Cloak gets only one chance to reproduce because (interestingly) this butterfly is single-brooded. It was my lucky day to see this freshly born butterfly because after a shot flight time, the butterfly will again disappear to estivate during the hot days of summer.
... now's the time. What are you waiting for?
A little spring mixed in with late fall is never a bad thing.
When I obtained my Esprit 120 refractor I jumped at the chance to once again image one of my favorite deep space targets - M106. This sweeping spiral galaxy features an active, feeding super-massive black hole at its core. That in itself is not unusual - what is unusual is its size - some 30 million times the mass of our sun. Because M106 is rather close to earth (relatively speaking) at some 25 million light years it lends itself to the scrutiny of earthbound astronomers eager to unlock its secrets.
In the upper left of this image lies galaxy NGC 4217. It is an edge on spiral galaxy about 60 million light years from earth. Many other galaxies can be seen in this image including NGC 4248, 4231, 4232 and 4226.

When I checked last night, the weather forecast called for a 30% chance rain this morning, so I was pretty sure there would at least be some clouds in the sky. Of course when my alarm went off at 5:00 am, I hit the snooze button and had the usual "Should I get up or not?" debate with myself.
This was my third Saturday in a row at Kirby Cove. The last two times I got skunked. This time I stood in the rain for roughly 45 minutes waiting for sunrise and making use of the integrated rain cover on my camera bag. I noticed a promising break in the clouds on the horizon, so I patiently waited for the the sun to peek through.
Shortly after sunrise the sun did indeed appear and briefly flooded the scene with warm light. During this time it continued to sprinkle on-and-off. I fired off a few quick exposures in between furiously wiping my filter with a micro-fiber cloth, and was lucky enough to capture this particular exposure with not a single water speck on my filter.
