26" chain pickerel released Pocomoke River

This photo shows the tree rings on one end of my block. The ruler is in millimeters.

My bucket list is very short, and includes carving an endless chain out of a single block of wood. I bought a piece of Honduras mahogany in August of 2011, when I was 59 years old. I considered waiting, but was concerned that physical limitations might appear later, such as arthritis. This endless chain will have 8 links. The tree rings shown in the end grain may enable me to identify when and where this piece was grown. If I successfully carve this, my next chain will have an odd number of links, a project that may be no harder to carve, but will be much harder to design & transfer to the wood block. If I screw up my current chain, I figure to at least end up with some nice toothpicks. So far, I have removed about 56% of the starting weight, going from about 30 ounces to about 13.

I flamework links of Pyrex glass by hand, one at a time, without molds. I developed and honed this time-consuming technique to build lengths of chains and piles of delicate-- but strong-- transparent necklaces. The clasps are also flameworked in glass.

These necklaces are available! Find my contact on my blog, linked below.

Nearly daisy chain time. That bit of grass does bug me but when I tried to find it again I could not and I was not as pleased with the others so I will have to put up with it.

On a flagpole at a neat abandoned wood mill I happened upon during my daily walk. I have a feeling I'll be going back there a lot.

My Good Babushka!

When she was 12 years old, Maria Goretti fended off a would-be rapist. He stabbed her 14 times since she wouldn't submit. Maria died of her injuries within 24 hours, but not before she said she forgave her attacker and wanted to see him in Heaven with her. She died in 1902.

Twenty-seven years later, the attacker was released from prison and immediately went to Maria's mother to beg her forgiveness (she accepted). They then went to Mass together, where they received Communion side by side.

This is closeup of Maria's attacker, Alessandro Serenelli, caught in the chains and darkness of sin in a painting in the new Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe just south of LaCrosse, WI.

Masana Kollai festival - Angaalamman Temple, Kaveripattinam, Tamilnadu, India - CWC photo walk

While hiking today we came across a large broken down, thoroughly rusted structure. We could see an axle, and multiple wheels for a possible pulley structure, a large collapsed tower or arm, and many struts littering the ground everywhere. This chain had made it's way very close to the trail, and is so solidly rusted that it no longer moves.
