Collioure is a commune in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in southern France
There is a record of the castle at "Castrum Caucoliberi" having been mentioned as early as 673, indicating that the settlement here was of strategic and commercial importance during the Visigoth ascendancy.
Collioure was taken in 1642 by the French troops of Maréchal de la Meilleraye. A decade later, the town was officially surrendered to France by the 1659 Treaty of Pyrenees. Because of its highly strategic importance, the town's fortifications, the Château Royal de Collioure and the Fort Saint-Elme stronghold, were improved by the military engineer Vauban during the reign of Louis XIV. Nevertheless, Collioure was besieged and occupied by the Spanish troops in 1793, marking the last Spanish attempt to take the city. The blockade was broken a year later by general Jacques François Dugommier.

View from the outside of Porolissum castra (Roman castra, singular castrum, were buildings or plots of land reserved for or constructed for use as a military defensive position).
We visited this extraordinary archaeological site which was once the most northern Roman fortress at the edge of the Roman Empire in Dacia, nowadays Romania. We walked on the Roman road which once connected Porolissum castra with other Roman cities (Napoca, Apulum, Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa), crossed the Danube at Drobeta and continued all the way to Rome.
See below some details about the site from Wikipedia.
"Porolissum was an ancient Roman city in Dacia. Established as a military camp in 106 during Trajan's Dacian Wars, the city quickly grew through trade with the native Dacians and became the capital of the province Dacia Porolissensis in 124. The site is one of the largest and best-preserved archaeological sites in modern-day Romania, 8 km away from Zalău, Sălaj County.
Even though the city was founded as a military center in the middle of a war, the garrison of Porolissum seems to have lived in peaceful coexistence with their Dacian neighbours - several Dacian villages that were apparently founded after the city of Porolissum have been uncovered by archaeologists on the surrounding hills. There are also some inscriptions mentioning city officials with Romano-Dacian names, indicating close cooperation on a political level.
The excavations by a number of teams are ongoing and have uncovered remnants of both the military installations and the civilian city, including public baths, a customs house, a temple to Liber Pater, an amphitheatre, insula consisting of four buildings and a number of houses. The main gate (Porta Praetoria) of the stone fortress has been rebuilt." (Wikipedia)
If you walk west from the Place de la Mairie (Town Hall Square) in the hilltop village of Roussillon in Provence and follow the steps and alleyways up past the belfry and around behind the church of Saint Michel, you will come to the Castrum Lookout. Nothing remains of the medieval castle that once stood here but the strategic advantage of the sight is clear. It is the highest point of the town and provides sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.
The view here is to the northeast looking down over the nearby houses and the serpentine sweep of route D-227.

The Romans had a "castrum" here, of which some remains can still be found. Near this castrum a (probably wooden) church, dedicated to "Saint-Michel", was mentioned in 889. This church got replaced by a larger one that got consecrated in 1020 by the Bishop of Langres.
Whith the growth of Dijon´s populationm this church became to small some centuries later and so it got finally replaced by the church seen today, consecrated in 1529. Work on the impressive portal was stopped in 1570 and restarted 80 years later. The two towers were completed 1659 (south, right) and 1667 (north).
Seen to the very right is the entrance to the "RUDE-museum", that is hosted in the former abbay-church St. Etienne.

Castrum - The village Pays-de-Belvès used to be called Belvès, it's fortified in the Middle Ages because of its strategic position and came to be known as the "Pope’s city" as it was under Clement V protection. Belvès still bears witness to a tormented past with fortified walls, a castrum (fortified camp), an 11th century auditeur’s tower, 14th-15th century castle and belfry, city hall tower, covered market, hotel with a Renaissance façade and even some ancient troglodyte dwellings. It has been designated as one of the most beautiful towns in France with impressive panoramic views on top of a hill, enough reason to be member of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France".
The castle's origins date back a long way. The Romans had already built a castrum there, which was later consolidated by the Normans in the 9th century.
However, it was the Counts of Namur who transformed it into a formidable fortress in the early 12th century. In 1176, Henry the Blind completed the defensive system by adding a wall flanked by several towers. The keep, sometimes called the "Crèvecœur Tower," was built in 1321. The two-level complex forms the fortress, which would often play an important role in the many conflicts between the neighboring and rival towns of Bouvignes (County of Namur) and Dinant (Principality of Liège).
View of the hemispherical tower added in the 15th century and the visitor safety improvements made after 2003.
In 1430, the army of Liège besieged Bouvignes and its fortress. It was then that the large hemispherical tower was added below, on the Meuse side. Seven gunboats were installed there. The defenders had to face attacks coming from the Dinant fort of Montorgueil, located on the right bank of the river.
Like Dinant Castle, Crèvecœur Castle capitulated during the siege led in 1554 by King Henry II of France, then in conflict with Charles V. It was virtually rendered useless, although restorations took place from 1567 to 1580.
It was during the final tragic moments of this memorable siege that three ladies participating in the defense of Bouvignes are said to have thrown themselves from the top of the highest tower to escape the invaders. This heroic deed (or legend?) is part of local folklore and is celebrated annually in the old parish of Bouvignes. On May 13, 1940, during the Battle of France, the Germans of the II./Schützen-Regiment 7 (a unit of Erwin Rommel's 7th Panzer Division), who had just crossed the Meuse at Bouvignes, captured the castle defended by the II/66th Infantry Regiment.
It is not known when the first castle was built. However, a Burg Staufen (Castrum Estufin) is documented in 1147, when the monks complained to King Louis VII of France about its unlawful construction by the Hohenstaufen Duke Frederick II of Swabia.
In the early thirteenth century, the fortification passed from the Hohenstaufen family to the dukes of Lorraine, who entrusted it to the local Rathsamhausen knightly family and the Lords of Hohenstein, who held the castle until the fifteenth century.
Whilst the Alsace are was under German control, reconstruction work started from 1900 to 1908. On May 13, 1908, the restored Hohkönigsburg was inaugurated in the presence of the German Emperor.
Histoire:

This is what is left of the first castle at Hald - in an area which was to have five different castles, built in four different places, but all within just a few hundred metres (and sometimes less) from each other.
The trees are growing on the outer walls which are now everything that remains of the castle. It was most likely built in the early middle ages, and was of the castrum-curia type. The castle was sometimes called Brattingsborg - a help to distinguish from the other four castles.
Earlier it was believed that these ruins were built when the king Valdemar Atterdag was besieging the second Hald, built by the noble man Niels Bugge who was heading a rebellion against the king in the middle of the 14th century - but this is now known to be wrong.
(And yes, Niels Bugge is an ancestor of mine.)

The story of Le Castella is long and follows more or less the same story of the surrounding territories.
For his landscapes that aroused admiration among the ancient travelers, Le Castella was the subject of many legends and even, according to some scholars, the Calypso Island described by Homer in his Odyssey, would be placed right next to the village (in some maps geographical medieval, there is the presence of the name Calypso on one of the islands that were close a few meters or kilometers from Le Castella). It is part of the mythological three promontories "Japigi", identified in Capo Rizzuto, Capo Cimiti and Le Castella, so named by the presence of the legendary Japyx, son of Daedalus, one of the most talented artists of ancient Greece. In fact, as reported some ancient literary evidence (Herodotus, Strabo, etc.), or Japyx Japige fled from Crete following his father on an expedition to Sicily; but on the way back, a violent storm wrecked it at the coasts of modern Calabria, and the town was given the name of "land Japigia".
Le Castella was first founded as a Roman colony (but remains of Greek masonry in the back of the fortress may deny it, advancing hypothesis of an ancient phrourion). A pact between Rome and Taranto truce war, ruled that a Roman colony was founded in 3000 settlers, called Castra (or Castrum) in monitoring vessels mutual, if one of the two cities exceeded the limit within which you must navigate, then the truce It would fade. Some legends tell of how Hannibal took refuge under some rocks of the cliff and ran away from there by the Romans, during the era of the Punic Wars.
During the Middle Ages we have little data of the country, we have instead some data in the late Middle Ages that show an economic prosperity and population growth (in the thirteenth century. The village was up over 2000 inhabitants); remains of this ancient being are the many professionals gathered in one university having a personal coat of arms.
In the fourteenth century, until the sixteenth century. He followed the historical events of the kingdom of Naples, at times Le Castella took active part in the outcome of the government, in fact, there was resistance to the rule of the Aragonese, from the inhabitants of the village who were faithful to the Angevins; after a long resistance where almost the entire population barricaded himself inside the fortress, the Aragonese were the domain of the fortress and the village. The event is known as the Battle of Le Castella, was a series of decisive battles in the Sicilian Vespers. It was during the Aragonese period that the fortress took the architectural forms today. Andrea Carafa commissioned the reconstruction of the fortress to adapt it to modern defense needs, in particular to make the walls more resistant by gunfire. From the sixteenth century. until the eighteenth century. the country and its fortress became scenarios of Turkish invasions, was the beginning of the sudden decline of the village, which will last for many centuries, until the twentieth century. The Ottomans put fire to the entire village, killing and kidnapping almost all the inhabitants. In 1536 the famous Barbary corsair Khayr al-Din Barbarossa kidnapped Giovanni Dionigi Galeni, who became famous as an admiral and pirate by the name of Ali PaÅŸa Uluc.
From the seventeenth century. until the early twentieth century; the village of Le Castella was sparsely inhabited, in fact in 1644 the town of Le Castella was abandoned by order of the royal court. For many centuries it remained a rural town devoted to 'agriculture, livestock, herding, fishing and a few other trades. For a few decades, the fort served as a refuge for the few who owned land in place, in the absence of any other defenses by Ottoman raids. It is known the report of the tour conducted by Abbot Saint-Non, which ascertained the state of abandonment of the fortress, in ruins and the conditions of life of the humble few who lived in the village. In the second half of the twentieth century. to this day, Le Castella has experienced an increase in population and an economic recovery in due measure from the main seaside tourism, and underwater cultural heritage.
Since 1991 is part of 'Marine Protected Area of Capo Rizzuto.
