In the summer of ‘42 and at the height of his creativity, all of Einstein’s equations pointed in just one direction and there was no escaping their astounding conclusion. Next to the Theory of Relativity, he considered Cap’n Crunch with “Crunchberries” to be his greatest discovery.
In this famous newsreel photo, he sketched what he thought the packaging might look like. Unfortunately he did not live long enough to see his creation become an American household staple.
With a lot of snow forecast for 8 of the following 10 days, I feel very lucky that my daughter and I had such a beautiful day on 17 December 2017, for our Christmas get-together. Since then, we have had so much snow and, at the moment, temperatures have plunged. For tomorrow, Christmas morning, the temperature is forecast to be -24C (windchill -30C). For two upcoming, out-of-city Christmas Bird Counts, the temperature is supposed to be -18C (windchill -25C) and -21C (windchill -28C)!
It was such weird weather on the day my daughter and I went off for the day, as the colour of the sunrise sky lasted all day, till we left just before sunset. A gorgeous Chinook Arch crossed the sky, staying the whole day. Some of the fields were bare, and others had a light dusting of snow on them.
The day started with breakfast at the Saskatoon Farm - always enjoyable. They do close from the end of the day on 23 December and open again in the morning of 17 January. A well-earned break for everyone who works there. As always, we walked around the grounds to look for things to photograph and, as usual, we were in luck - snow-capped dead flowers, cats, dogs, and the many little House Sparrows that were in and out of one of the greenhouses.
From there, we continued south to the area east of High River and drove some of the usual back roads; ones that I had driven just four days earlier. Of course, we were hoping that we might find a Snowy Owl, though I knew not to get our hopes up. Before too long, my daughter spotted our first Snowy Owl of the season - the tiniest speck of white that I could barely see with the naked eye, but it was a Snowy and that was all that mattered. Later in the day, she somehow spotted a second one; again, the tiniest speck perched on a very distant fence post.
A few minutes before this second sighting, my daughter spotted two handsome Mule Deer bucks - looked like father and son - lying down next to a metal grain silo, near the edge of the road. They stayed there for a while, which was surprising, as males tend to be far more skittish. Eventually, they stood up and walked off into the field.
Of course, we couldn't resist taking shots of any old barns, sheds and houses that we came across. Altogether, a great day that was much enjoyed. Thank you so much, Rachel, for spending the day with me, and doing something that we both love! These are my absolute favourite days in the year.

Las Tetas de Viana, peñas Alcalatenas, peñas Alkalathem, peñas Alcalaten o peñas de Braña son dos montañas gemelas, en forma de cerros testigo, situadas en La Alcarria entre las localidades de Trillo y de Viana de Mondéjar, en la provincia de Guadalajara (España). En diciembre de 2006 las Tetas y su entorno fueron declarados Monumento Natural por la Junta de Comunidades de Castilla y La Mancha.

Here is a basic pattern for the cycling cap I made. I have a big head so pull in the seams untill it fits you, then hem the length and stich the bill on. Cut on the thick lines, sitch the thin. If you download full size and print at 72ppi it should come out near the correct scale.

Su nido consiste en una taza poco profunda hecha de pelusa vegetal de coloración clara, decorada por fuera de forma variada con pedacitos de corteza y liquen gris; se localiza cerca de la punta de una rama, generalmente en una posición expuesta, en la parte alta de un árbol en el borde del bosque o en una sabana. Se reproducen de octubre a enero.
Alimentación
Visitan flores de poró (Erythrina spp.) de corolas largas (los machos algunas veces las defienden), ceiba (Ceiba pentandra), pochote (Bombacopsis quinatum), robles (Tabebuia spp.) y otros árboles. En algunas ocasiones visitan flores de banano (Musa sapientum) y platanillas (Heliconia spp.) y es frecuente que vuelen a considerable altura en el dosel para atrapar insectos.
Comportamiento
Son solitarios y defienden contra cualquier colibrí los árboles grandes con flores abundantes, o vuelan entre los árboles pequeños esparcidos sobre áreas extensas.
Duermen sobre ramas altas bien expuestas.

Viven en el dosel y los bordes del bosque seco (incluso en bosques de galería), bosques secundarios viejos, plantaciones de café y banano, y sabanas arboladas.
Distribución
Es una especie residente de poco común a relativamente común en las bajuras y colinas al norte de la vertiente del Pacífico, hasta los 800 m. a lo largo de la Cordillera de Guanacaste y hasta los 1000 m. en la Península de Nicoya; su abundancia disminuye hacia el este a través del Valle Central; se extiende regularmente hasta San José y en raras ocasiones hasta Cartago; es rara en la región de los ríos General-Térraba.
Distribución fuera de Costa Rica
Se encuentra desde el sur de México hasta el noroeste de Perú, Bolivia, parte central de Brasil y las Guyanas.

Descripción científica
Mide 12 cm. y pesa 7.5 grs. Es bastante grande, más o menos opaco, con el pico relativamente largo y grueso y la cola corta; presenta una lista blanca distintiva que baja por el centro de la rabadilla.
El macho adulto es verde bronceado oscuro por encima, con la coronilla fusca. Las timoneras son bronce verdoso con el tercio distal negro y las 3 externas con la punta blanca. Muestra las listas postocular y malar blancas y prominentes. La barbilla y la cara son fuscas y la gorguera iridiscente es entre rojo rosa y rojo naranja. Por debajo es predominantemente gris opaco, con los bordes de las plumas verde bronceado en los lados. El centro de la parte baja del pecho, el abdomen y los penachos a cada lado de la rabadilla son de color blanco.
En la hembra el fusco de la barbilla se extiende hasta el centro de la gorguera, cuyas plumas muestran el borde ante opaco, y el blanco en las puntas de las timoneras laterales más extenso. El pico es negro y las patas son fuscas.
Los ejemplares juveniles muestran toda la gorguera fusca, bordes anchos ante opaco en las plumas de la gorguera, pecho, costado y región superior, y la lista de la rabadilla con un tinte anteado.
