I was given a beautiful bouquet of flowers by one of my residents a few weeks ago when I found out my job was safe. My favourite flower is a calla lilly, this particular one seems everlasting! I kept intending to take a pic of it and finally got round to it today.
Maria Anna Sofia Cecilia Kalogeropoulos, or Maria Callas, Commendatore December 2, 1923 – September 16, 1977), was a Greek-American soprano, and one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. Many critics praised her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice and dramatic interpretations. Her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini and further, to the works of Verdi and Puccini; and, in her early career, to the music dramas of Wagner. Her musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina.
Born in New York City and raised by an overbearing mother, she received her musical education in Greece and established her career in Italy. Forced to deal with the exigencies of wartime poverty and with myopia that left her nearly blind onstage, she endured struggles and scandal over the course of her career. She turned herself from a heavy woman into a svelte and glamorous one after a mid-career weight loss, which might have contributed to her vocal decline and the premature end of her career. The press exulted in publicizing Callas's temperamental behavior, her supposed rivalry with Renata Tebaldi and her love affair with Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis. Although her dramatic life and personal tragedy have often overshadowed Callas the artist in the popular press, her artistic achievements were such that Leonard Bernstein called her "the Bible of opera" and her influence so enduring that, in 2006, Opera News wrote of her: "Nearly thirty years after her death, she's still the definition of the diva as artist—and still one of classical music's best-selling vocalists."

It is quite interesting that the calla lily is not a lily at all, and although it is related to the calla genus, it is not really a calla either. Then what is it? Calla lily is actually the common name for the Zantedeschia genus which once was a part of what today is known as the calla genus.
Calla lilies are one of the most beautiful flowers with a unique flower form. They come in a wide array of colors viz., shades of green, pink, purple, yellow and orange.
Callas are also known by such other common names viz., arum lily, trumpet lily, Pig lily, or Miniature Calla Lily. Calla lilies are native to Southern Africa. They are easy to grow and are generally grown from a bulb or rhizome.

Me and my fiancée of 2,5 years got married last Friday. Here's a shot of the boutonnière I wore at the wedding, a mango calla lily.
Strobist info: The bout was shot with the 85mm f/1.8 wide open, with a 430EX into a silver umbrella camera left, and a second 430EX positioned just under the lens. Both triggered by the ST-E2.
Calla lilies are a particularly challenging flower for me -- I dunno why. These were at Fred Meyers' Garden Center last year.

I saw some yellow lilies at a nearby house and went back several days later to capture them. But this time, there were hot pink calla lilies in bloom, so sometimes it pays to wait.

Taken at the Fred Meyer garden center here in University Place, Washington. I was fascinated by it's shape and, having my camera with me ;-), I just had to get a shot....I have been playing around with it in Photoshop to see what I can create, but this is the original.

It has been a must of spring flower shooting for me in the last couple years to go to Garrapta park of Big Sur, until the recent year the Calla Lillies Valley suddenly become so popular in general public, and not suitable for photographer. I did bring the family stop by the spot at late afternoon during the spring break, but decide not stay until the sunset since so many people running around the area.
I have scouted a couple of calla lillies spots in the Bay Area since last year, and still figure out the best way to present them. This is one of spots I discovered from last year, and I tried it this year with a foggy time. Let me know what you think.

Zantedeschia fall into two main types: hardier outdoor forms, often called arum lilies, with striking white flowers; and the more tender forms, such as this one, typically with white-spotted leaves and pretty flowers in yellow, orange, pink or dark purple.
These are often called calla lilies. This one was flourishing in a neighbour's front garden and, to my mind, one of the prettiest colours!
