Weston Park

The land on which Weston stands was first mentioned in the Domesday Book. The principal survivor of those times is the park which includes one of the original medieval deer parks and some impressive trees of majestic size. The King and Queen Oaks, recently freed from twentieth century conifer plantations harken back to this era. The Church of St Andrew, which remains the Parish church and is not owned by the Foundation, retains parts of its medieval fabric and, in its position next to the House, occupies the medieval site of Church besides Manor House. The land at this date was held by the de Westons, who took their name from the lands. Monuments can be seen in the Church, placed in their present positions in the seventeenth century by Elizabeth Mytton who herself was a descendant, through the female line, of this ancient dynasty.

One of the easiest to grow flowers, these are were grown from cuttings in my mother-in-law's gardens and they just flourish when you replant them. They never fail to flower every year.

All the Callas got a good shower from our recent rains, and more is expected tomorrow.

Calla lilies are one of the most beautiful flowers with a unique flower form, i love them. They are really coming up all over my garden. We have heavy rains this year and it has inspired everything to grow

All told there are 9, possibly more, different Calla Lilies growing under the mounds of California Poppies. We even found a bulb in cultivating the area to add some annuals, possibly had got turned upside-down and we've replanted in a better location.

Calla lily flowers, also called trumpet lilies or Lily of the Nile, most often have waxy-white flowers that gracefully twist and curl, ending in a delicate point. Calla lily flowers can also come in pink, orange or red, and the dark green, heart-shaped foliage can also be variegated with white spots. Calla lily plants are native to marshlands of South Africa but have gained popularity in gardens in the United States as marginal pond plants and container plants.

Calla Lilies are very popular for wedding bouquets as they signify magnificence and beauty.

White and Pink Calla Lillies....Taken with natural light and no photoshop intervention!

This is my favorite of the four calla lily photos. I love this because of its translucency and beautiful form.

Maria Anna Sofia Cecilia Kalogeropoulos, or Maria Callas, Commendatore December 2, 1923 – September 16, 1977), was a Greek-American soprano, and one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. Many critics praised her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice and dramatic interpretations. Her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini and further, to the works of Verdi and Puccini; and, in her early career, to the music dramas of Wagner. Her musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina.

Born in New York City and raised by an overbearing mother, she received her musical education in Greece and established her career in Italy. Forced to deal with the exigencies of wartime poverty and with myopia that left her nearly blind onstage, she endured struggles and scandal over the course of her career. She turned herself from a heavy woman into a svelte and glamorous one after a mid-career weight loss, which might have contributed to her vocal decline and the premature end of her career. The press exulted in publicizing Callas's temperamental behavior, her supposed rivalry with Renata Tebaldi and her love affair with Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis. Although her dramatic life and personal tragedy have often overshadowed Callas the artist in the popular press, her artistic achievements were such that Leonard Bernstein called her "the Bible of opera" and her influence so enduring that, in 2006, Opera News wrote of her: "Nearly thirty years after her death, she's still the definition of the diva as artist—and still one of classical music's best-selling vocalists."

Calla lilies are said to come from the ancient god Hera, the wife of Zeus. In the story, Zeus brought Hercules to nurse from his wife while she was sleeping. He wanted his son to have the strength of the gods. Hera awoke and pushed the baby away from her. Drops of milk flew across the sky creating the milky way and everywhere they landed on earth, calla lilies bloomed.
