As seen from the hills above, a loaded BN grain train meets a UP manifest along Caliente Creek. In just a few turns, the manifest will begin its climb up Tehachapi Pass.
BNSF 6102 is the lead unit on this tank train as it cautiously descends the Tehachapis and wraps around the curves at Caliente. The mid train DPUs can be spotted.
SD70M 9808 and 9812 lead their manifest freight through the Caliente horseshoe curve on April 1, 1995. To the left you see the swing helper set (SP 9773, UP 9267, UP 9238, SP 9678), which I saw several times that day.

The gorge is located in a long, narrow valley in southeastern Nevada. The cave-like formations and cathedral-like spires are the result of geologic processes from tens of millions of years ago. A photographer’s dream, the park offers stunning views of the scenic canyon. My night photo shows a tower in the gorge that the Civilian Concentration Corp built in the 1930s. The star trails above the tower are concentric around the North Star.

this place was so beautiful and the background so silky smooth looking. There are a few tourists and a minibus in the middle.
The tough part of the journey for the West Colton to Roseville manifest train is almost complete. The long train is approaching the small community of Caliente, deep within the foothills of the Tehachapi Mountains.
One of my favorite Tehachapi shots I've taken, from what was definitely my best trip out to the pass. After starting the day digging the car out of mud I got it stuck in near Mojave, I had a reasonably productive morning. For the afternoon I ended up taking a hike down Caliente Canyon which prove even more productive. Weather was in constant flux, but rail traffic was heavy, which resulted in a few winners like this shot of the ZLTLA working its way up the canyon towards Caliente.

BNSF 4002 South waits with a mixed freight for a meet with BNSF 4374, seen descending the grade above, at Caliente, California on March 1, 2016. The 4374 will negotiate the big horseshoe curve at Caliente before the meet and continue on to Bakersfield.

The summer of 2015 proved to be the last time I’d catch Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s circus train rolling through the Tehachapis Mountains on its way into Los Angeles. UP ES44AC No. 7486 and three other roster mates strain against the grade as they begin the arduous climb out of Caliente as they head for Tehachapi‘s summit.

An eastbound coal train, powered by a trio of Southern Pacific AC4400CWs, rounds the horseshoe curve at Caliente, CA.
A northbound BNSF freight passes through Ilmon, CA shortly after crossing the Tehachapi Mountains on the UP Mojave Sub. The train is crossing Caliente Creek which is flowing quite well on this wet winter day.
Illustrating the steep grade and the mountainous scenery that gives Tehachapi its notoriety, a 69-car westbound Santa Fe freight drops to the valley floor and negotiates the horseshoe curve at Caliente.
The PIOCHE CONSOLIDATED MILL, AKA the GODBE MILL, was originally built in 1891 to process silver ore. It burned in 1893, and again in 1929, but was rebuilt each time. The mill closed sometime around 1980.
Except for the shot of the pretend miner, a model, I shot these photos with the benefit of a full moon.
