With paintwork holding up far better than their UP cousins, a pair of BNSF Dash 9's, No. 4642 & 4381, work a westbound grain train, partnered up with ES44DC No. 7885. The train is seen entering the Caliente horseshoe. 03 March 2023.

For Station Saturday we see Union Pacific SD70M 4014 paused in front of the grand Caliente Station at about MP 461 on its namesake subdivision. This is the legendary, scenic, and challenging former Los Angeles, San Pedro, and Salt Lake Railroad and this depot was built in 1923 and was a stop for Amtrak's Desert Wind until 1997. Built in the standard Mission Revival style typical for the road it once had a hotel upstairs and railroad offices downstairs when this was a division point and helper terminal in the steam era for the grade up to Crestline. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and is now owned by the town and serves as municipal offices.

As for the train it is the eastbound special bringing the real 4014 to Cheyenne for the start of a five year long restoration. Check out this shot for a photo from the chase on this same day: flic.kr/p/2kyJzKB

Now getting stuck into the climb, Union Pacific No. 2524 is captured bringing its eastbound train through the Caliente horseshoe, although the train is actually heading due west at this point. 03 March 2023.

A northbound BNSF mixed freight snakes around the horseshoe curve at Caliente, California on March 3, 2020.
Piedras rojas part of the Aguas calientes salt flats, all the colors from the rocks, the salt lake and the mountains are surreal, one of the most beautiful spots of the Chilean altiplano (4000 meters above sea level) is also one of the most visited ones by tourists, when I arrived past midday it was crowded, so I have to wait some time to take the photos with the less people possible, also wind runs strong there, no tripod possibility neither for long exposures.

from march 09, my favorite house in caliente, calif. funny thing about this pic, it is same berries that were hanging on the barbed wire when i shot this before! tenacious little things.

Was nice passing through this Nevada town in the early morning. Quite the nice old train station there too ... a large one for being in the middle of nearly nowhere. Captured while traveling from Zion to Yosemite.
Happy Fence Friday :)
Scattered clouds defuse the midday sunlight shining down on SD70ACe 8978 and companions lugging a rail train out of tunnel 5 and through the hills just east of Cliff.
Caliente, California seems to be much more photographed, but the Nevada version is fine with me. Here we view coal loads heading west out of Caliente, Nevada and into the Meadow Valley Wash.

This is David a/k/a Gordo, my neighbor's other boy. I love this kid!! He is the sweetest little boy! He smiles all the time and has the straightest teeth I've ever seen on a four-year-old. And he's got the cutest little laugh he does while he just holds that smile.
This is actually him riding his bike and I really, really cropped in close. I can't believe how clear it came out for him moving. Trust me, total luck!
But again, it's showing much darker here than in PS. This is driving me C R A Z Y !

BNSF 5121 leads a colorful consist into Tunnel 2 south of Caliente, CA on Union Pacific's Mojave Sub. The Tehachapi region was as green as I'd ever seen it during this damp February visit.
