Sunset In Bangkok

Recently my English friend Andy posted a photo of an exposed cable TV cable emerging from the ground into a house and quipped that certainly the connection was not done in accordance to guidelines or regulations, and can even pose health and safety risks. I commented that he hasn't seen nothing yet, as a few cable TV/ telephone and even electricity power lines near my workplace have been looped or wired over road signs and trees deliberately and within easy reach by anyone, for years. Anyone who feels a vengeance against a neighbour or the cable TV/ telephone or internet company can easy inflict a disruption to the service by severing the cables.

No wonder we in Toronto suffer power blackouts, phone and internet service disruptions (even though mostly very brief) more often than one would think for a developed country.

14 minutes in the cable car

The cable guy. It was a cold, wintry night when we called. Cable was out. They said it would cost extra to send someone out off hours, but we were willing to pay; TV after all. So they dispatched him. Two hours later we called back asking about service. They said they had dispatched a service truck almost two hours ago and he should be there. He may be somewhere in the area, checking connections. Give him another hour then call back. An hour and a half later we call back. They’re not sure what’s happened and they’re checking into it. They’ll be in touch.

Morning news reported a missing cable truck and service engineer. That was the local news for almost two weeks, after the cable guy disappeared. They never found him, or his truck. Rumor was he had some personal issues and likely drove cross country somewhere. His family disagreed, said he was in good spirits and would never leave without saying something. That was nearly fifteen years ago…

New installation of power distribution lines.

Central Hudson Gas & Electric used 13 kv as a subtransmission voltage years ago, but they're using it as distribution voltage now. There are still some old subs around that step 13kv down to 4kv in the area, but they are fast disappearing as 4kv dwindles.

Spacewalk 3️⃣ for Oleg and Pyotr complete! They spent another 7 and a half hours outside yesterday for more work on the new Russian science module MLM. Television and internet is now connected, what more could you need? ;). (the television is for researchers to follow our progress working on experiments and the control centre to help us throughout the day, not for us to watch of course!) Well, they also installed a rendezvous and docking system, handrails, and even a biology experiment on the MRM2 or Poisk module that is on the other side of MLM! Another busy and tiring day, and we were happy to see them back. Being safely back inside is always a good reason to celebrate! We are really into spacewalk season two now, Aki and myself are preparing to go outside this Sunday to work on the P-4 truss and prepare it for more roll-out solar arrays.
