cwd 2801 ~ Fill the Frame redux From way back in Week 9: "Robert Capa tells us 'if you're pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough!' Take his advice, and get close to your subject. You know you've got it if there is no background, just your subject in frame."
This is a bit grainy due to light conditions but I like the surreal effect regardless

Letter to gnome captor
Gnome Slave Owner,
We deplore your treatment of gentle woodland creatures, and your total disregard for the basic principles of liberty.
Your moral bankruptcy is evidenced by your acts of wanton recklessness and the deliberate use of coercive force and terror tactics against gentle and innocent creatures.
It has come to our attention that a Gnome is being held captive in your garden. We do not, as a rule, negotiate with terrorists, however, we request that he be released immediately. Already your actions have prompted copycat offenses, which we have witnessed, including the deplorable use of a Gnome as a hood ornament.
We understand that you probably were not responsible for the innocent Gnome's original capture but rather purchased him from a Gnome slave trafficker like a garden center or craft show. Please understand that we are not holding you responsible for the state of Gnome slavery in America.
We are, however, asking you to put an end to your involvement. Do the responsible thing; free your Gnome today.
FreetheGnomes.com has specially trained caseworkers who will gladly work with you toward the goal of returning your Gnome to the northern woodlands from where he came. Please contact us today at FreeMe@FreeTheGnomes.com.
Although American law currently permits you to keep a Gnome in slavery, we believe it to be morally reprehensible. We hope that upon honest reflection, you will agree.
Stop Oppressive Gardening. Free the Gnomes.
This is my first week assignmet at Take a class with Dave & Dave...yeah.
Taken for a Class with Dave & Dave: Clones
After the Middle Autumn Festival, Taiwanese invites their Gods into temples in order to do some worships. This guy was using the sword to hit his back to show the respect to his Gods. It should be LOVE anyway.
Class with Daves: 16 weeks behind
Assignment 3: LOVE. Show me the love, baby! Tag with cwd213
TACWDD.
Ron, Emily, and baby Collins.
(Em and I already started coming up with rebuttals for those who think the baby didn't count as a third. We joked and said that, haHA, only she had the power to call it a baby and not a fetus! She said she'd compromise and call it a febus. YAY for being an aunt!)
cwd791 - Non-Human Clones
I haven't done this before so I thought the black background would help. But in the end the globe caused most trouble - it kept rolling away!
Last one for a couple of weeks - the beach is calling ...
Taken for "Take a Class with Dave & Dave
8 Seconds - An eight second exposure. That's your only requirement. 8 seconds. Not 7. Not 9. Eight.
8 seconds exactly here. I always work in aperture priority so it was good to try out the other options. I set it to Shutter priority (8 seconds obviously) and just pointed my camera out of the window of the coach I was on while travelling back from London to Oxford. It was night-time and it was a bumpy ride!
I did a few of these but we went past a fairly famous building on the A40 (I think) called the Hoover Building. Hoover used to own it, might be Tescos now. Well, they own everything else! And there was a Tesco sign outside for some reason. Anyway, this building was lit up in bright green so I managed to get that streaking across my exposure as well as the street lights above and cars below.
Came out great! I upped the saturation and contrast to make the colours pop.
I experimented about a little bit, but this was actually the second picture I took with the candle experiment and it is the one I like best. Of course it can't be ultimate sharpness with me being human and moving about etc.
I like candles but find it hard to actually clear my spaces enough so that the candlelight could have an impact. Somehow our house is always, always cluttered so I took this in the corridor.
(Hannah - note generous usage of the Hannah angle.)
For Take a Class with Dave and Dave: Assignment: Night Shot
I took a bunch of shots for this assignment (you can see them here), but I really liked this one for all of the angles and such.
Week 21
LOVE
Ok so this is very literal but it is love ...
The whole message read Jesus Loves You :o)
By the time the plane had finished the smiley it was sort of hard to read who it was who loved me.
KABUL, Afghanistan (Feb. 3, 2011) -- A group of Afghan Boy Scouts recite the Boy scout motto during their meeting. These boys are part of the Marastoon Boy and Girl Scout Troop in Kabul. The troop currently has more than 200 scouts and hopes to have 400 in 2011, said Tamim Hamkar, a scout trainer for the Marastoon troop.
for cwd "diptych" assignment. I would've preferred a more traditional nigiri sushi for the photo, but this happened to be around, less photogenic, but it will have to do. and these are my bunny chopsticks from Chinatown in San Francisco. :) i like them, but they are tiny, likely made for children.
Take a Class with Dave asked for Double (Multiple) Exposures this week. I don't have a dSLR that can do multiple exposures in camera, and I wasn't in a mood for film. I was having trouble coming up with two scenes that would work well as a double exposure, so I decided to try something different.
The same scene (almost identical fields of view), shot once in the visible spectrum with a pinhole "lens" and a second shot in the infrared spectrum through my 50mm.
I merged them together and adjusted the opacity of the two layers in post-processing. I played with some of the blending modes on the different layers and came up with some rather nice results but I ended up just using the "normal" mode and adjusting the density of each layer to simulate the process of in-camera multiple exposures as best I could.
Not sure if I'm thrilled with the results but it was a fun exercise in a few different areas.

Today's Random Fact: If you don't try it, you'll never know!
Project wingman is the Air Force Suicide Prevention initiative. It has been determined that airmen returning from the warzones are at a much greater risk for suicide than the general population. Project Wingman aims to educate all the people around these servicemen how to look for and prevent suicide through the techniques of ACE (Ask, Care, Escort) or the more intensive Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training. From the Project wingman website:
“The goal of the Wingman Project is to eliminate Warfighter and family member suicide through human outreach, media and training.”
Take a class with Dave and Dave can help get the word out by creating the images that go with these posters. We can create the media. Please create an 8 X 12 300dpi image that can fit in these posters. Your image should include text expressing a concept that these people are not alone, we are their wingman.
Silence is so much more than just absence of noise.

Last time I made fruit salsa, I took a picture of a whole apple, but as I was layering the fruit into the chopper, I noticed how Christmas-y the colors end up being with kiwi, green apples and strawberries. So I took a few shots. Then, I wondered what it look like with a water color effect per the Classes with Dave assignment. And here is what it looks like!
