U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District staff were fortunate to once again take part in the Charter School for Applied Technologies, Kenmore, NY annual Celebration of Reading event this week. Lead by Buffalo District Commander LTC Adam Czekanski, approximately 20 staff members connected with the elementary students through reading and highlighted the importance of life-long reading/learning, while exposing the students to the many different careers within the community.

S várták a vijjogók a véres napvilágot...
A bús, halvány király virrasztott bőrös ágyán,
És nézte: függönyén hány kék, vonagló árny van.
Bolyhos lepkék libegtek az ezüst mécs rőt lángján,
S egy vak szú fúrt sebet az ében sátorfában...
A barna erdők mélyén már jött a bősz tatárhad,
Hörgő avar között kúszott meggörbült testtel,
Mint vérivásra kelt, csíkos bőrű, szikár vad,
S Batu keskeny szemében zöldes láng sercegett fel...
Aztán omlott az ős vér, mint drága, barna ó-bor,
S a hantot nyögve túrta az összefojtott jó had,
Futott szegény király, az immár koldus, kóbor,
S félévig szűlt hullát az ájult, sápadt Sajó-hab...
Most borzong puha éj itt, mint fekete hattyútoll,
És míg gyors gőzösünk futó fénye világol,
Ébred egy szőke apród, s egy ósdi nótát dúdol
Szép barna paripás, jó barna daliákról...
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District team members visited the Charter School for Applied Technologies today to assist the student with their projects in the New York State competition called Science Olympiad, Dec. 12, 2012.
Project areas focused on were structural engineering and map analysis. Corps team members will continue to support CSAT students until their competition in February 2012.
Buffalo District team members were once again participated in the Celebration of Reading at the Charter School for Applied Technologies. The two main goals of the event are to: (1) highlight the importance of reading and education to young people, and (2) expose students to the broad spectrum of careers available to them.
"Supporting STEM activities and motivating students to read is not only part of the Corps of Engineers mission, but a mission that I fully support here in the Buffalo District," said MAJ Michael A. Busby, Buffalo District Deputy Commander
