The old corn cribs were designed so the equipment can pull through and unload, then the equipment stored over winter for protection. Over the years the corn cribs evolved to outpost garages and junk collections in the fileds.
The atmosphere of the window has changed a lot since the picture that I uploaded in May. The misshaped shadow in the previous picture is the sheep of this crib mobile. My baby keeps me busy. I have had and will have little time for photography for a while.

The Crib Goch ridge of Snowdon, taken in deteriorating conditions a year ago. Crib Goch (Red Ridge) has to be the most entertaining of the main routes on Snowdon, but you do need a head for heights. Looking along the knife edge, to the left the ground is very steep and to the right it is a sheer drop of hundreds of feet. It is not recommended in high winds, and it is also known to be one of the wettest places in the country (slippery when wet....) - so check the forecast!
This is the Crib I've made in my home ...

Snowdonia is one of the wettest parts of the United Kingdom; Crib Goch in Snowdonia is the wettest spot, with an average rainfall of 4,473 millimetres (176.1 in) a year. It means 4,473 litres of water on every square meter.
These corn cribs are for storing corn until needed for shelling and grinding into feed for cattle. Fences and gates are for running cattle in a field for foraging. This is rapidly becoming a disappearing phenomenon on the farms on the prairie. Many farmers now joke that they belong to the C.B.F. club. Corn, Beans, and Florida. Having no cattle or other livestock to tend to, committed only to row crops, there is no need to be on the farm all winter. Corn cribs and barns for storing hay are no longer needed. Forget about silos for ensilage. It does indeed simplify things but many farmers I talk to speak nostalgically about the old days when there was year round work to be done on the farm with animals to tend to and all of their associated needs. Something about farming without animals just doesn’t feel right. Children’s books like Old McDonald Had A Farm would today only show a combine, machine shed, and grain hauling semi rig. Yikes! What happened?
... diese Krippe hat unser Uropa geschnitzt. Oma hat mir auch erzählt, diese Figur sieht ihm sogar ein bisschen ähnlich !!" 😊
... this crib was carved by our great-grandfather. Grandma also told me this figure even looks a bit like him !! 😊
An end view of what I think is a corn crib with storage in the middle. If you know what this shed is used for (besides storage) leave a comment. Happy Mono Monday everyone!
I was fortunate to see the North Manitou Light Station (aka "the Crib") yesterday on a relatively calm day.
I would say that 85% of our Sunday excursions are done in the countryside and yet, in all those miles I don't recall ever seeing a corn crib. At least not one nearly full like this one is! I am wondering how the farmer gets the corn back out again. I can see it is fed into the top by the elevator, but then what? Looks like a door on the bottom, but I don't know how you would open the door. It's a mystery to me! LOL
Another walk up to the summit in the dark for sunrise; and one I'am addicted to for sure, just having the rooftop of Wales to yourself watching the sun rise on a new day is complete solitude, great place to be.
You can just make out the two walkers on the ridge making there way to the summit of Crib Goch, I was happy when I spotted them on the large screen.

As I drive the back roads in our rural area, I'm surprised at how many of these old wooden corn cribs are still standing. Modern harvesting machines pick and shell the corn in one operation so storing corn on the ear is no longer needed. But resourceful farmers have repurposed the cribs for other farm storage.

An old corn crib and wagon - both old and gray!
I always think of the amazing stories these aged buildings and farm equipment can tell. Love the Cupola!
