so...it went really well (it ususally does). better than i ever imagined. i taught many people how to knit, college age, high school, and down to five and six year olds. i refreshed many twenties to middle-aged women who then exclaimed that they were going to go home and knit again, which they hadn't done in a long time. while i was teaching several children in a row, older german women, east indian women, asian women, and once two white girls in their early twenties just walked up and started knitting. only one person wanted to know about recycling sweaters, but really a thing like that is a one person at a time thing. it seems that you're ruining a perfectly good sweater to some.

all that in three hours.

one scarf is missing from the picture because i gave it to a young asian girl. she learned to knit from me and sat there for a half an hour knitting. she picked it up super quick. all of these other irritating little kids kept asking me how much everything cost, so in the end i gave her both the scarf and the needles. sigh. i told her that when she gets to the end she needs to start asking everyone around her if they know how to end it... i'm sure there's a knitter somewhere. she was a natural. fabulous.

overall, i love this stuff. i love that the thing that i have to teach is not about posessing, it is about movement and creativity and warmth. nobody could complete a whole scarf in that amount of time, so there's only the stitch to teach, the memory of a motion to pass on- a motion passed on through the generations by many before me who i am indebted to.

people who like to knit, like to knit. i kept seeing the same women eyeing the table... just wanting to be knitting. community scarves are amazing because people are free to experiment and do whatever they want... just enjoy the knitting without the pressure of getting anything done to wear. i highly highly highly recommend it. it has been a blessing in my livingroom.

that said, i think i'll start being available at the thrift store on saturday mornings for a couple of hours to teach and help community members with knitting projects. the problem with western culture is that there is never the public space for things like that to happen. this festival is a one shot deal once a year to come in contact with your neighbors... where does that leave you the rest of the year?

sorry for the rant. i'm beat and excited. reminds me of why i have education certification along with my english and art degrees. xxoo cosy

I watched this woman walk up the path toward this doe that was standing right at the edge of the blacktop. She stopped within arms length of the doe and was talking to it for a good minute.

The doe just stood there placidly, and when the lady said goodbye and kept going, the doe calmly went on it's way across the path.

The deer have become pretty blase about humans at this park!

And, yes, this is a (three exposure) hdr.

On Sept . 23, 2008 I had the opportunity to work with the art students from Northampton Community College in a community art project. Each student created 2 or 3 paper and oil pastel tridimensional pieces based on a template a created. After each pieces was assembled, I put them together in a Racimo (a banana bunch!), a hanging art piece.

Briceville Community Church, Briceville, Tennessee.

Built circa 1887 by Welsh immigrants coming into the area to work the coal mines, this church served as a cornerstone for the local community during the violent labor disputes of the Coal Creek War and two major deadly coal mining disasters.

Its history is too extensive to properly summarize here, but I suggest looking at its National Register of Historic Places form (catalog.archives.gov/id/135817619) and the Historic Marker Database (www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=102331).

The church is currently undergoing restoration work, and more information about that project can be found at the Coal Creek Watershed Foundation (www.coalcreekaml.com/).

Community Transport companies with restricted licenses have been one of the grey areas which the authorities appear blinkered to. They certainly seem to have a place in the industry though and this picture illustrates probably where. The 906 from Hebden Bridge to Widdop is a service linking a few very rural houses & the popular walking area above Hebden. Other operators would struggle to resource an occasional route like this which only operates from April until the end of October on an infrequent basis. The regular bus seems to be this VW minibus which has spent some time in sussex with a similar operation. It is seen here on the climb to Widdop with some lovely autumnal colour. You would perhaps expect destination information to be lacking on a service like this but the number at least appears twice in the usual window position and on the bonnet of the vehicle for good measure !

Since ancient times Sundanese are agricultural community that revered natural power that give fertility in plants and animals, this natural divine power is identified as Nyi Pohaci Sanghyang Asri, the goddess of rice and fertility

My wife and I were enjoying a coffee in a park in Toronto’s east end when he arrived at a bench nearby and parked his unique bicycle. It had a very low-to-the-ground frame and a very long wheelbase. I recognized it as a “custom” and when we had finished our coffees I went over to compliment him on the bike. He appreciated my interest and confirmed that it is a custom. The frame is from a company in California and it’s in the “low-rider” style. Meet Louis.

Louis is very proud of the bike and said he has another at home where he lives, an hour northeast of Toronto. He also has a Harley Davidson motorcycle he enjoys riding when he’s not bicycling. Louis explained that there are a number of such bicycles – all different – around Toronto and many of the owners are part of a group called Loco Riders. He himself found out about custom bikes when he saw one on the street a few years ago. When he expressed interest he was told to attend the Zombie Walk in Toronto if he wanted to see more customs. He did and that was all it took for him to fall in love with custom bikes. He had to have one of his own. This bike was purchased from the original owner who decided he wanted a lighter bike.

He keeps his bike inside and doesn’t use it around home much due to the fear of it being stolen. He transported it into Toronto today, parked his vehicle downtown near the harbor, and rode the bike along the Martin Goodman Trail to the Beaches where we met. The low-rider had a small skull attached to the hub of the long handlebars and he explained it was a squirrel skull he had come across. The fake human skull forms the knob on the “dead man’s shifter” used to change gears. He called my attention to a sticker on the bottom part of the frame that read “There’s no life like low life” in reference to the low-rider community. When I asked about the frame he said it’s referred to as a “gangster frame.”

Louis explained that some in the custom bike world consider themselves gang members but that his interest does not go in that direction. He seemed community-spirited and told of a “poker run” event he took part in recently on his Harley to help raise funds for a family in the community in need of financial assistance to help care for their special needs daughter.

When I asked what he does when he’s not riding he explained he works for a truck and heavy machine company in the business office. He used to be a truck transmission mechanic but health problems made it difficult for him to continue working under trucks and he has now spent several years in the business office.

When I asked him if he would let me photograph him and his bike for my Human Family project he said “Sure, if you want to.” I took a couple of photos and then he sat down on the bench to continue talking about custom bikes. As we talked, I asked to take another portrait-style photo of him sitting on the bench and he shrugged his agreement. “No problem.” He said he didn’t need a copy of the photos when I offered them and he proceeded to show me a multitude of photos he had on his cell phone.

I asked Louis to share a message with the project and he thought for a moment. “You’re never too old to have fun.” We both laughed and he elaborated “Here I am, 60 years old and I’m still playing with my toys.” Noting the bicycle helmet in my hand he said “I see you’re riding. What kind of bike do you ride?” I explained “Nothing unique. It’s just a pretty well used city bike.” Louis replied “There’s nothing wrong with city bikes.”

We parted with a friendly handshake and wished each other safe cycling.

She is really shy, I saw her before I have started shooting. I've made a lot of photos, before I've asked her to pose me. I've asked her to smile, but she couldn't. I don't know why. I've tried everything, but only one thing helped me: I've asked the guide to translate that she is beauty, So now you can see the result of my idea.
