The Class 45 became the main replacement to steam in the 1960's, especially in the Midlands. The were powerful and fast. They did have reliability issues. Even so, the noise these make do send any Diesel Head into a frenzy. This one was working at East Lancashire Railway this Bank Holiday weekend.

Avanti West Coast 390 020 at Blackpool North Station. A few minutes before starting the 9.47 a.m. service to London Euston Station, with me on board.

The Class 390 high speed tilting trains were built between 2001 and 2004, coming in to service during 2002. Fifty-seven units were originally made, mostly in the UK but the later ones were manufactured in Italy where the technology for the design came from. A few have already been scrapped.

Avanti West Coast is jointly owned by First Group and Trenitalia.

Heaton Lodge Junction, Mirfield

Having just passed Class 37 37100 on a tanker train, Class 45 45104The Royal Warwickshire Fusilier takes the Huddersfield line at Heaton Lodge Junction, Mirfield.

Originally D59, this is an engine I saw many times over the years - at York, Toton, Mirfield, Holbeck, Raventhorpe and once at Elland, nr Halifax. Withdrawn April 1988.

This section is now single track for east-bound only. Today (2018) the Class 45 would have gone straight ahead (where the Class 37 is located) and branched left to Huddersfield soon after. This avoided trains having to cross the east-bound Calder Valley mainline

A pair of class 37s ease a train of hot rolled steel coil past York Yard South signalbox. So much of the familiar York landscape in this picture has gone, the sugar factory doesn't cover the Acomb, Clifton and Rawcliffe areas with the sickly sweet smell of it's winter boiling processing of sugar beet. Many of the sidings have been lifted, the carriage works has gone. The wagon works (on the right) is still working. York Yard South 'box, opened in 1961, was a casualty of the York IECC scheme in 1989. I only visited it once, in 1985 as it was difficult to reach.

I notice from other people's photos, that many freight trains work through the station now, instead of using the Holgate Jn - Severus Jn line seen in this picture.

31438 was withdrawn from mainline service by British Rail in September 1995.

Absolutely adore Class 31's. Cut my young trainspotting teeth on these in this British Rail blue livery at Chelmsford station on the Great Eastern Main Line in the late 1970s.

Class 47 47804 pulls away from Wickford with the 1Z24 0737 Southend Victoria to Poole "Cathedrals Express" Rail Tour.

This train was running 12 minutes late as the driver did not appear to be happy with something around one of the buffers at the front of the locomotive during a scheduled stop at the station.

This train arrived at Poole approximately 24 minutes later than planned at 15:10 rather than the scheduled 14:46.

Valentine cards my daughter made for her Class in 2009. They were made with die cuts and punches - all heart and circle shapes. Once all the pieces were punched, she had a ball putting them together in different combinations. I think she tried to make each one different (26 of them).

Time to start thinking about what to do for this year.
