My 1994 Toyota Camry that I bought in April 2023. 2.2 I4 5S-FE engine. My current project to go with my Beetle project.
For some reason I saw an ad on eBay for this car, felt sorry for it and despite having more than enough projects in my life and things to keep me busy for the next 200 years decided it might be a good home for the straight panels on my estate spares car (which are otherwise of no use on my later Camry Sport). With one owner from new and only 56k miles under its belt it should have many years left in it, surely too good to be scrapped? Damage was never claimed for on insurance, so it’s not declared as a write-off (which it would have been).
Slight issue, car is in Gloucester which isn’t very near Norfolk. Raileasy shows me I can get there fairly easily for £30 on a Saturday.
Next, how to insure it? It’s already MoTed, so it’ll be easy enough to tax if I get there early enough. Call to my helpful classic car brokers confirms they can deal with it for £46 for the duration of my current policy, so that’s straightforward.
Ring the chap and agree a price of £350 (it was up for £400). Book train ticket, pay for insurance, send the dealer a cheque as a deposit. I’m going to collect and drive back a damaged car I’ve never seen before for 170 miles across country, in the middle of January. What could go wrong with a plan like that?
Stay tuned for the next instalment!
Yay! Seeing this was like bumping into an old friend quite unexpectedly. I'm not sure if I've ever seen a Camry in France before in recent years, yet oddly the same morning I saw another one of these on the move.
Always interesting to strip a car down and see what it looks like under the bolt-on panels, lights etc. That crossmember behind the bumper is the worst bit of rust I've found, it's amazing how easy many of the bolts were to do undo even when tucked away underneath. It was really just high mileage that saw this one come off the road in the first place - it had done 203k miles.
The tailgate in particular will be invaluable in repairing my other one.
Be interesting to see what I get for it tomorrow.
Oddball JDM import that turned up at Billing in 2006. I'd guess this is based on the narrower version of Camry they had in Japan. Not a proper hardtop as there still appears to be a B-pillar, but frameless windows to give it a pillarless look.
The fifth generation of the Toyota Camry was sold between 2001 and 2006. This one seems to be imported from North America. Despite being one of the best selling cars in the USA the Camry wasn't very succesful in Europe. So this was the last generation of the Camry sold over here.
As a recognisable vehicle at least. Dropped it off at my local metal yard, got a total of just under £127 for it with three batteries and an alloy wheel weighed-in separately. Doubtless there was much more I could/should have removed from it, I just didn't have time. I do still have one more spares car.
A 51-reg Almera was driven-in over the bridge when I was there, looked perfectly respectable. The owner got £75 for that one.
Not an eye catcher, well it caught mine but this one wasn't in superb shape like the last Camry sedan and wagon previously uploaded.
Visitors from Switzerland, US-spec model?
Last year I managed to see several French market Camrys, none this year though.
Was very pleased when I saw this hiding away in the shade of a tree, especially as I was in my own Camry. Seemed to be very well-kept.
Cambodia really is the land of the Camry! I've never seen a place where one model has been this dominant before. There where Camrys of all years and models everywhere! I must have seen at least 100 a day!
Nice unit of this (also) nice Toyota Camry, I won't say they're really really rare to find but I won't say they're easy to spot either, they pop up from time to time, this is the second one I've seen this year so far, it's all said, and the other one looked exactly the same.
Was carrying a plate from Santander (Cantabria) and from 1990.

Facing-off with my next-gen model! Definitely some Lexus LS400 styling similarities.
Not sure if the spoiler was standard for this model, I see the V6 saloons with and without them but they're not uncommon. Helps with reversing anyway, as the bootlid is otherwise invisible.
The plates say Dingles Toyota, but it was actually sold new by a dealers in Cambridge (Hallens). I found this less than glowing page about them: www.jpoc.net/cars/mycars/toyotabrakes.html
It looks as if they were located here, the Hallens name still in evidence: maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&g...
Note the Cargo with odd headlamps!
Edit: With perfect timing, a Client whose family firm runs the current Toyota and Lexus dealers in Cambridge just rang, so I asked him about Hallens. Seems that Marshalls took it on from them in the ‘90s, before they in turn lost it to the current set-up.
Further edit: It seems Hallens were based at 1 Union Lane, Cambridge when they sold this car. Nothing particularly garage-looking there now, the site has presumably been redeveloped.
By coincidence, this morning I briefly followed a tidy, previously unseen E-reg Corolla with an ‘FL’ registration sporting a Hallens dealer sticker in the rear window.
Two things make this Camry a bit of a standout in NYC these days:
1. It isn't black or yellow
2. It doesn't have livery plates
