Playing Catch at Crissy field..one of the best places to take shots of the Golden Gate Bridge..this dog was having a great time playing catch...and i decided to practice my panning skills...and the end result was this and getting my shoes and socks soaking wet...this is one of my personal favorites...i tried to get the dog and the ball and the reflection in one shot along with the motion blur of the pan...but i got real lucky to catch this little guy in air..and that was just pure luck!

I so wanted to get down there on the beach! But the only path down was very steep and of crumbly shale rock that breaks off easly. Most of the path looked doable but there was one or two places where there was drop-offs that were almost stright down for several feet. Without camera and tripod, I might have actually considered it. Or if I was 30 years younger. So, I settled for this view as much as I hated to. At least the sunset was pretty.

Hearst Castle is a National Historic Landmark and California Historical Landmark mansion located on the Central Coast of California, United States. It was designed by architect Julia Morgan, between 1919 and 1947, as a residence for newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, who died in 1951. In 1954 it became a California State Park. (wiki)
Took this shot at California Dreaming in Charleston SC. I saw this group of people enter and the first thing I noticed was this wonderful head of hair on the lady taking the group picture. I didn't want to impose on their dinner, so when I saw them taking a photo I snapped this shot. Oh I love a healthy head of hair.
As some of you know, I got tired of our snow and crummy weather in general. So I drove to Watsonville, California and holed up in a Motel 6. these are from my first night there. Capitola was about 8 miles north of my motel. I took everything in bracket exposures for HDR use but these first 3 images are single shots that are pretty much right out of the camera with just minor sharpening in CS3.
I may do HDR on some of my future post from this California trip. I did the Hole in the Wall beach, Bonny Doon, Half Moon Bay, Shark Fin Cove, Bean Hollow, Seacliff Pier, Davenport Pier and then I moved south to the Monterey/Point Lobos/Big Sur area. No rain for 10 days!!!!
Canon 40D 28-135 kit lens set at 28mm, 30 seconds @f22, ISO100. Cokin P. 121 M graduated filter.+ digital circular 72mm polarized filter.
This 8 second exposure is one of a 3 exposure bracket. I straightened the horizon in Photoshop but did not do HDR or anything else. It's awfully bright but I like it anyway.
I used a Cokin graduated 121. m filter, and a .9 ND filter to get the long exposure, @F7.1, 53mm @100 ISO.

I usually try to not show two really similar versions of the same subject but I just couldn't make up my mind as to which one I liked best of these 2 Hole in the Wall shots..
These are from the second time I visited Hole in the Wall. It was easy getting there this time because I knew how to put my camera and tripod on a ledge while I used both hands to climb up and then move the gear up to the top for the last half of the short climb.
I had been there a while shooting rock/cliff/ocean when a couple of girls and a guy came by and walked up to a seal on a ledge and said oooh, poor thing is dead and then they moved on. I liked the ridges of rock leading up to where he was laying, so I set up my tripod and was trying to focus and decide what f-stop to use when suddenly he raised up his head, opened his mouth wide and let out a huge barking cough, Then he laid back down and proceeded to look dead. After I got over my startled state, I thought maybe that was his very last cough and now he really was dead. (see 3rd picture)
When I was done shooting and got back to the little 8 foot climb, the dark and the higher tide made the little climb down problematic. I could see the ledge that I put the camera/tripod on but none below that. And as I was trying to see my route, my flashlight started blacking out. After 10 minutes that seemed like forever, I managed to get down safely and didn't even get water in my rubber waders.. I was beginning to wonder if the hole in the wall was going to have waves going through it. So I was quite relieved when it was mostly dry. I finally got my flashlight to stay on but ran out of steam about half way up the climb to the top where the trail to the parking area was. But, at that halfway point, there was a spot big enough to set up my tripod, so I started a 15 minute exposure (see 4th picture) and I found a place where I could sit down and rest. When I finally got to my car, I checked my blood and my glucose reading was 46 (I'm a type 1 diabetic) and then my difficulties getting out of the Hole in the Wall made sense.
Yes, I ate food and got my glucose reading up to normal before I started driving back to the motel, thank you.
Where the Bonny Doon road ends at National Hwy 1, there is a nice strip of concrete for parking. From there it is an easy climb up to a railroad track. Go right to walk along the cliffs and experience many amazing vistas. Go left to take an easy sandy trail down to the beach.
Both days I was there, I saw quite a few nudes and I managed to keep them out of my photos, except one guy that I hadn't seen and one guy that I didn't realize was walking around in just a cowboy hat.
There was a lot of fully clothed people and families, So I didn't feel out of place at all.

As I walked the shore at Carlsbad State Beach the sun was setting. I looked back to see this young lady standing in the surf. Her silhouette spoke to me of the brief period when a young woman is at her most alluring. She has a long life ahead of her and I wonder what it will be like when she is my age.
My alternative title for the shot was "California Dreaming" referring to times when an old man thinks back on his younger adventures.

Standing beneath the soaring rotunda of San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts reveals the grandeur and theatricality of architect Bernard Maybeck’s Beaux-Arts vision. Captured here in delicate overcast light, the Corinthian columns, oversized urns, and detailed frieze work frame a perfectly symmetrical view toward the rotunda’s outer archways. The octagonal coffered ceiling overhead hints at classical inspiration, while the interplay of shadow and light lends a cinematic air to the monumental space. Built originally for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, the Palace was designed as a place for quiet reflection, and that mood persists even today. Spring blossoms peek in from the right edge of the frame, softening the otherwise imposing architecture and reinforcing the seamless marriage between built environment and landscape that Maybeck envisioned. Located in San Francisco’s Marina District near Crissy Field and the Presidio, this beloved structure has become one of the city’s most iconic wedding venues and photo locations. A careful observer will note the lion keystones and Greek key molding—small gestures among the overwhelming verticality of the pink-hued fluted columns. The Palace may have been born of a world’s fair, but over a century later, it remains a permanent reminder of the city’s romantic embrace of art, nature, and human creativity.
Ambra (aka Nicole Kidman), went to New York and then to San Francisco, California yesterday Oct 9th 2011.
She was fascinated to be in the airport among those airplanes and thousand of people.
She will be very happy!!! We are so glad!
Ambra is a Lagotto Romagnolo dog.
This is the only breed of dog that is officially recognized as specialized in truffle hunting.

My M taking in Yosemite. Half Dome just behind him. He was accepted into the photography program for middle school. He's enjoying it so much and I'm enjoying our photo talks and walks!
Half Moon Bay is around 24 miles north of Davenport, CA. I drove up there expecting to see some really big waves. I was disappointed in the wave size but there was a lot of open space with very few people and lots of fresh air!
Point Lobos blew me away!! I saw beauty everywhere I looked. I could not compose and shoot fast enough! I will never forget the place. This same evening/night, I got sunset shots like I have never seen in the great northwest!

Central Park in Old Town Pasadena. Taken with my Nikon 70-300 lens at 300mm, and about 75 ft. away from within my car. The beautiful tree trunk is a tall Sago Palm with new palm shoots growing off the trunk. She was not modeling for me! She is leaning against a very old and tall Sago Palm. You can see the new palm fronds growing out of the trunk.
