Another telephoto capture from my California Dreamin’ photo archives series...Zabriskie Point, northwest toward Manly Beacon and Red Cathedral, Death Valley National Park, California, USA circa April, 2010

One of the most famous Death Valley viewpoint...Zabriskie Point, a colorful, undulating landscape of gullies and mud hills at the edge of the Black Mountains, just a few miles east of Death Valley...The views from Zabriskie Point are amazing in every direction. Beneath Zabriskie Point are the upper reaches of Gower Gulch, which brings rainwater and eroded minerals to the salt flats below.

Death Valley is pretty in pink in this panoramic shot from December 2022. I've edited a ton of shots from Zabriskie Point before, but never one that focuses on the surrounding structures than on the "usual" point of the overlook. It's all wonderful.

Many thanks for all the kind words on the last picture to hit explore. It's so hard to respond to each one, but I'm honored each time.

Logging In

After almost giving up on Mono Lake ...patience paid off...the clouds broke and the rain stopped just a little bit for me to take a few shots (tho it was way after sunset...the long exp did bring out some colors).

Was reminded of the trip to mono lake after talking to an old good friend from high school after years..he is also into photography..especially landscapes...if you get a chance visit his photoblog Here Awesome stuff.

This is one of the buildings in Bodie which is a ghost town..in well..Bodie..which is.. well.. in the middle of nowhere.Went thru a dust storm while getting here... winds gusting to about 40 plus mph..(my assumption)..freezing temperature..needless to say it was pretty bad out there. Bad to the point that the park ranger came and asked us to leave after about 15-20 mins there as debris was flying all over the place...but i have to say it was an amazing place..specially to take pictures..wish i had more time there. On the way out of here to Mono Lake .we had to go thru a rain storm and then on the way to Lone Pine ..went thru a snow storm...crazy!

Candid eye contact street photography from Glasgow, Scotland. The skies were grey too! California Dreaming is one of my all time favourite songs so I couldn't resist taking this shot, the eye contact really sums up the mood in town on a cold, windy and overcast summer day. Enjoy!

From the photo archives, I think this one is “of the times”, reflecting social distancing and comfort in our reconnection with nature. Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, near Stovepipe Wells, Inyo County, Death Valley National Park, California circa April 2010

Either Floyd is so small or I am so large, or perhaps a bit of both.

This landscape photo is from the Santa Lucia Range in Southern California close to the ocean after leaving the Big Sur drive on Highway #1. The route #46 runs east between San Simeon and San Luis Obispo ending at the 101.

The hillsides remind me of the paintings of Eyvind Earle (1916-2000) who painted extraordinary landscapes mostly in Southern California and the Big Sur area.

From July 2022:

One last day in this joyful place. I love wilderness. I love solitude. I love how these two wonderful qualities are found in abundance in National Parks. That said, sometimes, and especially in our oldest and more historic National Parks, there is a spot that everyone goes to and partakes in what I call "traditional tourist activities". That usually means seeing the most iconic or typical overview of the park they're in. Old Faithful is a great example of this. Mather Point, too. Here in Sequoia? It's the Sherman Tree. Seeing people pour into the Sequoia grove and marvel at the largest tree on Earth is joyful. There's electricity in the air. Happiness is found in spades. And there's a sense of solemn and noble purpose too; people have made the pilgrimage to this park, now it is time to act upon the place as generations before us have, too. That's usually executed in everyone gathering for a picture with the tree. But what stands out to me is the reaction immediately following or preceding the picture: pure awe that you're in the presence of something so ancient, so massive, and so pure, and so universal. Nearly everyone who has journeyed to Sequoia has done this. That sense of joy and awe and purpose is palpable. National Parks are landscapes of nature, yes, but also of emotion. This particular landscape is a landmark of joy. I'm going to miss Sequoia National Park very much. I didn't expect how much I would love it, but here we are. Joyous.

I've been pretty busy with work & school lately but I'm almost done with my bachelors degree. I've got some cool Amsterdam-related assignments coming up this month so you can expect some new work at the end of December!

I'll be in the States as soon as possible again too.

This is three shots stitched together in Lightroom to fully capture the expanse of the badlands of Zabriskie Point interacting with the sublime spectacle that is a Death Valley Sunset. Those pink tones in the clouds lasted for maybe a minute, at most. I've never moved my tripod quicker.

This grand building used to be the passenger depot for the Southern Railway and the Atlantic Coast Line in Columbia, South Carolina. There were at least four tracks through here and various platforms for the passenger trains. A walkway set out from where the staircase is that took you above the railroad tracks. This was all before my time before the number of passenger trains in Columbia dwindled down to two total at the "new" Amtrak station on the CSX.

It is now a California Dreaming Restaurant and Bar

Witnessed some of the most amazing clouds during the drive from Lake Tahoe to Bodie/Mono Lake...that coupled with the desert landscape really looked almost surreal...taken right after hitting highway 395 from Lake Tahoe near Carson city.

Super excited about this one. Hawk Hill is one intense place to go shooting, especially at night, and especially when it’s foggy. What I love about this photograph is that you can actually see the fog moving above the Golden Gate Bridge but you can also see it floating right in front of the hills and catching the beams of light from passing cars. The whole experience was surreal and ethereal and otherworldly; you feel like you’re perched above San Francisco, with the whole of the city and The Bay spread before you while the very air and sky in front of you glows and undulates and flashes with streaks of shimmering iridescent vapor. And of course, there’s The Golden Gate Bridge, looming in front of you, overpowering all in its presence, and happily spanning the whole horizon and defining the space. San Francisco is magic.

A wide angle shot of Downtown LA and the surrounding area at blue hour. This is another shot I took while on the peaks at Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area.

While the building in the background is now a California Dreaming, it was once Columbia, SC's Union Station for the Southern Railway and Atlantic Coast Line. And the train passing the station was, of sorts, a passenger train, actually one of two trains that traveled America tht broughnt the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to town. The first part of the train housed the animals followed by the performers and crews. Lead locommotie CSXT 7554 was a GE C40-8 built for the railroad in 1989.
