The Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) is a Medieval stone closed-spandrel segmental arch bridge over the Arno River, in Florence, Italy, noted for still having shops built along it, as was once common. Butchers initially occupied the shops; the present tenants are jewelers, art dealers and souvenir sellers.
There have been shops on Ponte Vecchio since the 13th century. Initially, there were all types of shops, including butchers and fishmongers and, later, tanners, whose "industrial waste" caused a pretty rank stench in the area. In 1593, Ferdinand I decreed that only goldsmiths and jewellers be allowed to have their shops on the bridge in order to improve the well-being of all, including their own as they walked over the bridge.
Benvenuto Cellini, a 16th century goldsmith, is honoured with a bust on the bridge. By night, the wooden shutters of the shops make them look like suitcases and wooden chests, making it a very suggestive route to take along an evening passeggiata, or stroll. Ponte Vecchio is a very romantic spot in Florence, with its great views over the river and of the bridge itself.

Every evening, the Eiffel Tower is adorned with its golden covering and sparkles for 5 minutes every hour on the hour, while its beacon shines over Paris.
The beacon, sending out two light beams with a reach of 80 kilometres, is composed of 4 "marine" motorised projectors. They are operated by automatically piloted computer programs. Since their rotation sweep is 90°, they are synchronized to form a double beam in a cross that pivots around 360°.
This beacon resonates the image of Gustave Eiffel's Tower itself as a universal and symbolic landmark.
Installing the lights was as impressive as the lighting itself :
25 mountain climbers for the 5 month installation ; 20,000 special light bulbs (5,000 per side) attached one at a time ; 40 kilometers of strings of light and electrical cords ; 40,000 joints and 80,000 various metallic parts weighing 60 tons ; 230 enclosed lighting fixtures and electrical boxes ; 10,000 m² of safety nets ; 120 kilowatts of power ; Budget total: 4.55 million euros HT

Tolga Convent was founded in 1314 on the left bank of the Volga river, on the place of miraculous appearance of the Tolga Icon of the Mother of God. Against all odds of history, beginning with Mongol Yoke, Tolga Convent emerged from ruins and desolation and nowadays attracts thousands of pilgrims. The convent is located not far from Yaroslavl; on the left bank of the river Volga, at the place of confluence of a small river Tolgobolka (or Tolga) into Volga. White stone walls with high angle towers, cathedrals with multiple heads, glaring golden domes and crosses and a predominating massive bell-tower form one magnificent harmonious structure, captivating eyes of those travelling along Volga. The cedar grove has been planted here in the 16th century to commemorate the miraculous appearance of the icon after fire.

The awesome city of Rotterdam at night. Love the mixture of the different lights! The foggy conditions add something special to an otherwise dark black sky.

The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a stone theatre structure located on the southwest slope of the Acropolis of Athens, Greece. The building was completed in 161 AD and then renovated in 1950.
In ancient times, Odeons were built for musical contests and this ancient stone theatre has gone on to host some of the world’s best musical performances during the last 60 years since its modern day re-opening, including Nana Mouskouri, Luciano Pavarotti and Frank Sinatra to name a few.
Facade of the Institut du Monde Arabe, designed by Jean Nouvel in Paris.
A building that blends tradition and technology through a lattice of light-sensitive apertures, inspired by Arabic geometry and calligraphy.
Framed from one of the side entrances, the composition leads the eye through clean lines and concrete walls, as if walking along a corridor between two worlds.
A space meant for crossing… even if the destination remains unknown.

De Magere Brug in Amsterdam by Night
One of the most photographed bridges in the Netherlands, the famous Magere Brug. I love how they have decorated the bridge with all the lights, it makes for such a great sight. We stumbled upon this bridge on our wander through the lovely city of Amsterdam during the Amsterdam Light Festival.
