Over three hundred years of great collections underpin the history of Villa Carlotta, where art walks side by side with nature in a breath-taking landscape scenario. Overlooking the shores of Lake Como, the villa was built in the late-seventeenth century by Marquis Giorgio Clerici of Milan. In 1801 Villa Carlotta was sold by Caterina Bigli Clerici, the last descendant of the noble Milanese family, to Giovanni Battista Sommariva, at the time President of the Governing Committee of the Cisalpine Republic (1797–1802) established by Napoleon Bonaparte in northern Italy. In 1843, Sommariva’s heirs sold the villa to Princess Marianne of Prussia, who gifted the residence to her daughter Charlotte (1831–55) when she married Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen (1826-1914). Despite the early death of his beloved wife in 1855, the duke and his family stayed on at the Lake Como abode, adapting the dwelling to changing needs and tastes, renewing furnishings and décor, as well as adding numerous rare botanical specimens that can still be admired today. During World War I the villa was confiscated by the Italian state and its management entrusted to the Ente Villa Carlotta, established by Royal Decree in 1927.

The Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) is a Medieval stone closed-spandrel segmental arch bridge over the Arno River, in Florence, Italy, noted for still having shops built along it, as was once common. Butchers initially occupied the shops; the present tenants are jewelers, art dealers and souvenir sellers.

There have been shops on Ponte Vecchio since the 13th century. Initially, there were all types of shops, including butchers and fishmongers and, later, tanners, whose "industrial waste" caused a pretty rank stench in the area. In 1593, Ferdinand I decreed that only goldsmiths and jewellers be allowed to have their shops on the bridge in order to improve the well-being of all, including their own as they walked over the bridge.

Benvenuto Cellini, a 16th century goldsmith, is honoured with a bust on the bridge. By night, the wooden shutters of the shops make them look like suitcases and wooden chests, making it a very suggestive route to take along an evening passeggiata, or stroll. Ponte Vecchio is a very romantic spot in Florence, with its great views over the river and of the bridge itself.

State Historical Museum is the largest national museum of Russia. Its collections have been forming for more than 100 years and now contain over 4.5 million items. Architect Vladimir Sherwood and engineer Anatoly Semenov created the building of the museum on Red Square. It was opened for visitors in June 1883 during the celebrations of Emperor Alexander III coronation. The exposition starts in a majestic Ceremonial Entrance Hall (Paradnye seny) with “The Genealogical Tree of Russian Rulers” painted on the vaults. The first halls (1–7) introduce ancient history: the development of human civilization in Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages.

Szék (Sic) is a sleepy village not far from Kolozsvár (Cluj) in Transylvania (Romania).

The Szék community managed to preserve its unique folk traditions, distinctive styles of music, dance, embroidery, and costume through the centuries. Many of the older villagers still wear their traditional costume as they go about their everyday life.

The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a stone theatre structure located on the southwest slope of the Acropolis of Athens, Greece. The building was completed in 161 AD and then renovated in 1950.

In ancient times, Odeons were built for musical contests and this ancient stone theatre has gone on to host some of the world’s best musical performances during the last 60 years since its modern day re-opening, including Nana Mouskouri, Luciano Pavarotti and Frank Sinatra to name a few.

The Petronas Twin Towers feature a double decker skybridge connecting the two towers on the 41st and 42nd floors, which is the highest 2-story bridge in the world. It is not attached to the main structure, but is instead designed to slide in and out of the towers to prevent it from breaking, as the towers sway several feet in towards and away from each other during high winds. It also provides some structural support to the towers in these occasions. The bridge is 170 m (558 ft) above the ground and 58 m (190 ft) long, weighing 750 tons. The same floor is also known as the podium, since visitors going to higher levels have to change elevators here.

De Magere Brug in Amsterdam by Night

One of the most photographed bridges in the Netherlands, the famous Magere Brug. I love how they have decorated the bridge with all the lights, it makes for such a great sight. We stumbled upon this bridge on our wander through the lovely city of Amsterdam during the Amsterdam Light Festival.

The Cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is located not far from the Kremlin on the left bank of the Moskva River, in a place formerly called the Church. The existing structure is an external reconstruction of the temple of the same name, created in the XIX century, carried out in the 1990s. The original Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow was erected in gratitude to God for saving Russia from the Napoleonic invasion. It was built according to the project of architect Konstantin Ton. The construction lasted almost 44 years: the temple was laid on September 23, 1839, consecrated on May 26, 1883. December 5, 1931. the temple building was destroyed. Rebuilt in the same place by 1999.

Tolga Convent was founded in 1314 on the left bank of the Volga river, on the place of miraculous appearance of the Tolga Icon of the Mother of God. Against all odds of history, beginning with Mongol Yoke, Tolga Convent emerged from ruins and desolation and nowadays attracts thousands of pilgrims. The convent is located not far from Yaroslavl; on the left bank of the river Volga, at the place of confluence of a small river Tolgobolka (or Tolga) into Volga. White stone walls with high angle towers, cathedrals with multiple heads, glaring golden domes and crosses and a predominating massive bell-tower form one magnificent harmonious structure, captivating eyes of those travelling along Volga. The cedar grove has been planted here in the 16th century to commemorate the miraculous appearance of the icon after fire.
