BLM Winter Bucket List #27: Sonoran Desert National Monument, Arizona, for Day Hikes Among the Saguaro
The Sonoran Desert National Monument, a part of the BLM’s National Conservation Lands, contains more than 487,000 acres of Sonoran Desert landscape. In the most biologically diverse of the North American deserts, the Sonoran Desert National Monument includes an extensive saguaro cactus forest and three distinct mountain ranges - the Maricopa, Sand Tank, and Table Top Mountains. The monument is also home to three congressionally-designated wilderness areas, many significant archaeological and historic sites, and remnants of several important historic trails.

The Delta Wild and Scenic River Watershed originates south of the Denali Highway and includes all of the Upper and Lower Tangle Lakes, the Tangle River, and the Delta River. The Delta River drains north through the Alaska Range, eventually joining the Tanana River and emptying into the Yukon River. The watershed includes 150,000 acres of land, 160 miles of streams and 21 lakes, providing excellent habitat for over 100 species of migrating birds and waterfowl as well as grayling, whitefish, lake trout, burbot, and longnose suckers. Much of the watershed is surrounded by arctic tundra with grasses and sedges makitg it a popular place for berry picking and for migrating caribou. Recreationists who visit during the fall, winter and spring will often witness subsistence hunting and gathering activities.
The southern stretches of the Delta Wild and Scenic River Corridor are located within the Tangle Lakes Archaeological District and contain hundreds of archaeological sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Use of the area for hunting, mining, and subsisting are evidenced for the last 10,000 years.

Opunohu Bay is one of the few sandy beaches on Moorea. The walk from the HIlton took about 40 minutes, but there were a lot of photo stops along the way. In the background are some of the sail boats from the Tahiti/Moorea Sailing Rendezvous.

Welcome to the March #conservationlands15 Social Media Takeover — With Dinosaurs!
Today’s takeover will feature National Conservation Land locations that have been the sites of some of the most significant dinosaur discoveries in the world! Stay tuned for a top 15 list of dinosaur discoveries, a paleo bucket list location and more throughout the day.
Our first dinosaur destination is the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument in central Montana. This area, known locally as “The Breaks,” features a quintessential vast western landscape that was frequently portrayed in the paintings of American artist Charles M Russell. In 1855, Just 50 years after the famed Lewis and Clark expedition first came through the Upper Missouri, Ferdinand Hayden set off on his own expedition to document the paleontology and geology of the area. Among his findings were at least two different types of theropod dinosaur — the first skeletal remains of dinosaurs ever discovered in North America.
Visitors will find the landscapes of The Breaks are much the same as they were when the lands were first explored in the 1800, with the 149-mile Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River as a centerpiece.

April #conservationlands15 #bucketlist: Bodie Hills, California, for Wildflowers, Wildlife and One-of-a-Kind Ghost Town!
California’s Eastern Sierra region is a dramatic transition zone between the snowcapped granite spires of the Sierra Nevada and the endless sagebrush covered uplands of the Great Basin. A visit at the right time of year will reward visitors with a diversity of wildflowers.
One great wildflower viewing area is just north of Mono Lake and east of Yosemite in the rolling Bodie Hills – hills being an understatement since they top out at over 10,000 feet! Because of their high elevation, wildflower blooms are later here than much of California – typically arriving in May-June on the lower slopes and into July on the highest peaks. Several back roads traverse the area and offer access to view the displays of phlox, penstemmon, and paintbrush to name a few of the many wildflower species. More than 100,000 acres of BLM lands cover most of the Bodie Hills and include several wilderness study areas.
This year’s bloom promises to be early and short due to the dry winter across much of California. However, even if you miss the peak bloom, there is no shortage of things to see in the area. Bodie State Park is the site of the best-preserved ghost town in California, and arguably in the U. S. Wildlife viewers can see antelope, mule deer, and if lucky, get a glimpse of a sage grouse. If you visit later, around early October, crisp clear nights will turn the scattered aspen stands to gold, giving a second opportunity to see the Bodie Hills in color.

#hexagenialimbata on Lake Almanor #flyfishing #bucketlist ☑️ #browntrout. Hex Hatch on Lake Almanor - My grandfather started coming to Lake Almanor after his return from WWII. For most summers since, my family has made the long drive north to relax at the lake. I found a passion for fishing on the lake, and in the streams that feed and drain it. Occasionally, when the water and wind were just right, we'd find a big yellow bug on the lawn, deck or trees. Curiousity led me to learn about Hexagenia Limbata -- the world's largest mayfly -- a trout's Big Mac. Each year, during the last two weeks in June, these giant bugs crawl out of the muddy lake bottom, swim up through the water column, and emerge at sunset to float like little yellow sail boats on the lake's surface. Giant trout, normally dwellers of the deeper regions of the lake, move with the bugs to gorge themselves. The fishermen follow. Unfortunatley for me, the timing of our family vacations never coincided with this ritualistic phenomenon. Fishermen fantasize; it's part of who we are. The dreaming is a big part of what we love about the sport. I've literally dreamt about this hatch on several occasions over the last 30 years. The Hex on Almanor has always been an unfulfilled line item in my bucket list -- until last night. Finding myself between jobs, and with a wonderful wife, I snuck away to chase the bugs, catch the fish, live the dream. Check. Check. And Check. How lucky am I?
