BLM Winter Bucketlist #8: Silverton Mountain Ski Area, Colorado, for Backcountry Skiing in Prime Powder Conditions
Thrill-seeking skiers with advanced skills in gliding down Colorado’s backcountry mountains will want to add Silverton Mountain ski area to their bucket lists. With an average snowfall of more than 400 inches per year, the ski area - the only in the U.S. located entirely on BLM lands - features guided, unguided, and heli-skiing on black diamond runs on more than 13,000 acres near Silverton, Colorado.
From mid-January through March, a single chair lift takes experienced skiers partially up Silverton Mountain ski area where there are no groomed runs and no cut trails. From the top of the lift, guided skiers hike five minutes to an hour to some of the best powder conditions in the nation along with large open bowls and steep, tight chutes.

Photo Bucketlist Bird Achievement Unlocked!!! Rails are a group of small to semi Large wading water birds found all over the US. They, however, like to remain hidden in the shadows and out of sight. Recently, per the accidental discovery of a rare bird for MO, people have been flooding to a park to catch a glimse of it. On the flip side of this, they are making lots of reports of their findings and several Virginia Rails have been amoung them. It has also been noted that the rails have been behaving veryun-rail like. Upon arriving to the parking lot, this was very true as several Sora - the US's most common rail, were happily working the mud paying no attention to anyone. I photographed them for a while, in hopes the Virginias would appear with them. No luck at the first area, so a short walk to the other side of the grasses and BAM!! There it was! Right out in the open water, probing for food. I was carefully trying to creep on it to not scare it off but it became evident shortly after that it really didnt care about me, as long as I maintained some distance from it. The distance was rather minimal, so I fired away and got several awesome shots. While walking in the mud, the probe it with there long bill, which is super sensitive, looking for worms and other tasty aquatic treats. I spent quite a while taking photos and video of this rail, and I hope to return again soon for even more shots.
BLM Winter Bucket List #17: Powderhorn Wilderness, Colorado, for Cross-Country Skiing across Alpine Tundra
The Powderhorn Wilderness in Colorado is found in a rugged, glacier-carved landscape of the northern reaches of the San Juan Mountains. The area consists of large expanses of alpine tundra, spruce forests, and several alpine lakes at nearly 12,000 feet in elevation. Breathtaking views of the San Juan Mountains are available in this wilderness. Above 12,000 feet are two high-elevation plateaus that make up the largest relatively flat expanse of alpine tundra in the lower 48 states.
The higher elevations of Powderhorn Wilderness area characterized by alpine tundra and high alpine lakes, such as Powderhorn Lakes and Devil’s Lake. During the winter months, visitors can enjoy this scenic area while cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

I have made several attempts to photograph Puffins up close and personal for the past couple of years and today was my lucky break. Upon arriving there were approximately 25 or 30 on land prancing around. I have shots of just one Puffin, two in a shot, three, four and more! Over the next few days I will be converting from RAW to Jpeg and uploading a few at a time. Photographing Puffins crossed off my bucket list :)

And we say traditionally believed because, historically, this has never been confirmed 100%. Nevertheless, it is true that 33 is also a symbolic number, and not at all random, based on the importance of the number 3 in the Christian world, as the symbol of the trinity.
I have lived in South Korea, Alabama, Texas, and Kentucky. I have traveled to 25 countries, and 49 states and enjoyed many cruises, train and road trips. Hadley gave me a gorgeous Diamond ring when we married. I don’t care about clothes, a big house, or a fancy car. But I have been wanting really nice pots and pans since I started cooking last year. California’s Eastern Sierra region is a dramatic transition zone between the snowcapped granite spires of the Sierra Nevada and the endless sagebrush covered uplands of the Great Basin. A visit at the right time of year will reward visitors with a diversity of wildflowers.
One great wildflower viewing area is just north of Mono Lake and east of Yosemite in the rolling Bodie Hills – hills being an understatement since they top out at over 10,000 feet! Because of their high elevation, wildflower blooms are later here than much of California – typically arriving in May-June on the lower slopes and into July on the highest peaks. Several back roads traverse the area and offer access to view the displays of phlox, penstemmon, and paintbrush to name a few of the many wildflower species. More than 100,000 acres of BLM lands cover most of the Bodie Hills and include several wilderness study areas.
This year’s bloom promises to be early and short due to the dry winter across much of California. However, even if you miss the peak bloom, there is no shortage of things to see in the area. Bodie State Park is the site of the best-preserved ghost town in California, and arguably in the U. S. Wildlife viewers can see antelope, mule deer, and if lucky, get a glimpse of a sage grouse. If you visit later, around early October, crisp clear nights will turn the scattered aspen stands to gold, giving a second opportunity to see the Bodie Hills in color.

The 19,935 acre Cadiz Dunes Wilderness encompasses a major portion of the Cadiz Dune system and desert shrub lowlands just east of the dunes. These small dunes were formed by north winds pushing sands off the Cadiz Dry Lake. The pristine nature of the dunes and the beautiful spring display of unique dune plants have made the area a favorite for photographers. Wildlife tracks provide evidence of including coyote, black-tailed jackrabbits, kangaroo rats, quail and roadrunners, rattlesnakes, and several species of lizards.

I've wanted to write something meaningful lately, but I haven't had anything meaningful happen. I found my old bucketlist from highschool...I plan to re-write it and add to it. It's sad because I don't see them as dreams anymore, I see them as lavish goals. I only think "well that's going to be insanely expensive because you want to do that one thing that is free". Well such is life. I'll do all of it. I am free now after all. I fell off my bike twice last night, but the second time turns out I really messed up my arm. Like I can't lift it. The muscle is beyond sore. I took chula for a walk. That was dumb. She peed on the sidewalk...she's always doing her best to make me proud. It's freezing right now in Miami so its only motivated me to get back home and do nothing with my life but be sore and cold. I have one more episode of SoA season 5 to watch with my dad and then he can watch season 6 and he's all caught up. There is a line in the show, and I must say it is perfect. It defines my train of thought the last month in its entirety. Eli tells Jax "Don't compare our guilt." And he replies with "Once you've crossed that line, there is no comparing. There is just that side of the line." And that's where I feel I am. I'm on the side of the line I haven't been on in a very long time. I've walked the straight and narrow the last 4 years in college with the occasional partying once I turned 21 because I was working 2 jobs, going to school full time and I wanted to see if I could do all of it inebriated. Turns out I was pretty good at it. But once my senior year of college started I changed. The straight and narrow turned into a high acrobatic balancing act and I was scared of heights. Like anything I mastered it, but I went through hell. And at the end of all of it, I'm glad I can say I'm here, on the other side of the line. Where I once was four years ago. When I was full of fear because I didn't know what was going to happen next. Where I was going to be, what I was going to do, whether I wanted to do anything alone, whether I wanted to settle for things and people, or whether or not I was going to fight like I always have to prove to myself that I'm better than settling. I know a lot of people who don't want to admit to being on this side of the line. They see it as incomparable, but the reality is, we've all crossed this line and nobody wants to share the guilt.
So I sat outside today in the cold, with a half empty gatorade bottle (which by the way to those who don't know, makes you infertile after so many years of constantly drinking it...that's what a friend told me...I can say that it's complete and utter bullcaca) and my phone and just shot it, or myself, or just the lens until my mom came outside because in honesty, god forbid I'd go anywhere on our property alone without someone following me to see if I'm okay 'because it's not normal to want to be alone'...sure, okay. It comes in waves. I know she's just worried and she cares. Truth is, she's the only one other person and I never thought to have kept it to myself. The guilt is beyond anything sometimes, then it disappears. That doesn't make sense to me. So I get why she checks on me. She knows, she's been through it. So she gets why it comes and waves and whether or not I sink into a hole and how quickly I manage to climb out of it. It's just all so very bizarre. I just never thought I'd be this girl with such shitty luck. I am the worst statistic. I mean shit, what else could happen, right?
I'm turning to religion.
No, no I'm not. That was not only sarcastic, but messed up so I apologize to the majority of you. Here I am. With a phone and a camera, and a bottle of gatorade.
My life is pretty much in order.

Today I got to cross 1 thing off from my "bucketlist" I had the chance to photograph Raul De Molina and Lili Estefan from the show "El Gordo y La Flaca" They were broadcasting the show live from "La Villita" Chicago.

The warm waters are rich in minerals like silica and sulfur and bathing in the Blue Lagoon is reputed to help some people suffering from skin diseases such as psoriasis.[2] The water temperature in the bathing and swimming area of the lagoon averages 37–39 °C (99–102 °F). The Blue Lagoon also operates a research and development facility to help find cures for other skin ailments using the mineral-rich water.
The lagoon is a man-made lagoon which is fed by the water output of the nearby geothermal power plant Svartsengi and is renewed every two days. Superheated water is vented from the ground near a lava flow and used to run turbines that generate electricity. After going through the turbines, the steam and hot water passes through a heat exchanger to provide heat for a municipal water heating system. Then the water is fed into the lagoon for recreational and medicinal users to bathe in.
The #mypubliclandsroadtrip moves from the Washington D.C. area down to the Gulf Coast for some behind-the-scenes science. We first visit the Lathrop Bayou in Florida where the BLM Eastern States, Southeastern States Office celebrates a bumper crop of endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers.
“Several years ago, I learned a valuable lesson. Don’t just say “yes” to a field trip with a BLM Biologist without asking questions. This particular trip involved four states, mosquitos, no-see-ums, alligators, late night drives, midnight boat rides, and no sleep. Why did we do this? To re-locate Red-cockaded Woodpeckers from a donor site in Georgia to a BLM managed site, Lathrop Bayou, in Florida.
More than a hundred years ago, the Red-cockaded Woodpecker was a common sight in open stands of old hardwood pines throughout the southeast. Unlike most woodpeckers that are content to build their homes in a wide variety of dead tree trunks, Red-cockaded Woodpeckers are very particular about where they make their nests. This species seeks out open stands of long leaf pine which have been living for at least 80 years. But the only trees soft enough to allow the woodpeckers to carve out a nest are ones that have been infected with a disease called red-heart fungus. Over the decades, as ancient pine forests have been thinned out, the population of the Red-cockaded Woodpecker decreased. By 1970 they were on the brink of extinction. So when we found two existing clusters here, we were extremely excited. We determined that, “Lathrop Bayou has the potential to house three active, reproducing clusters of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers on its 550 acres of longleaf pine/wiregrass habitat,” said Faye Winters, BLM Wildlife Biologist.
Working with local partners, BLM has been trying to manage and restore the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker population. This year really shows how our efforts have paid off. Nest checks recently completed at Lathrop Bayou documented 4 nest cavities with chicks! There have been up to three nests in previous years, but this is the first time we have ever recorded more than two nests successfully hatching. We recently documented 10 adults and 9 nestlings at the site. Two of the nests are on BLM land, and the other two are on adjacent partner managed lands. All of the chicks have been banded and an attempt will be made soon to determine their sex. This bumper crop of chicks opens the door to potentially donate a chick back to Wetappo, in Georgia, where it would be paired in a new recruitment cluster to increase genetic viability. We consider the increase in the Red-cockaded Woodpeckers at Lathrop Bayou to be a huge success, one we have worked hard for and are very proud of.”

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing began in 2005, serving wounded military service members at Walter Reed Army Medical Center returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since then, Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing has expanded nationwide, providing structured fishing opportunities for military veterans in Department of Defense hospitals, Warrior Transition Units, and Veterans Affairs Medical Centers and clinics.
The BLM Glennallen Field Office in Alaska has been hosting Project Healing Waters events at the BLM’s Tangle Lakes area since 2011. The program provides basic fly fishing, fly casting, fly tying and rod building classes for all experience levels. The waters - home to Arctic grayling, whitefish, lake trout, burbot, longnose suckers, and more than 100 species of migrating birds and waterfowl - provide participants with unforgettable experiences, fishing side-by-side.
For military veterans, America’s public lands can enhance physical and emotional well-being as they connect with the lands and waters they fought to protect. Public lands can have a profoundly healing effect. For BLM employees, Project Healing Waters is a small way to give back to these men and women and their families. #BLMproud

Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area extends out from the Oregon coast, one mile into the Pacific Ocean. Standing 93 feet tall at the westernmost point of the basalt headland, the lighthouse has guided ships and their supplies along the west coast since 1873. Last year, the Yaquina Head Lighthouse underwent a preservation project that lasted about 90 days.
The offshore islands are a year-round refuge for harbor seals and a spring-summer home for thousands of nesting seabirds. Gray whales can be spotted during their annual migrations to Mexico (late fall-early winter) and Alaska (late winter-early spring). During the summer months, some gray whales take the opportunity to feed in the shallow waters around the headland.
Cobble Beach is compiled of millions of round basalt rocks that produce an applause-like sound as the waves roll in. When the tide is low a vibrant ocean floor is revealed—pools of colorful animals including orange sea stars, purple sea urchins, and giant green anemones.
Lifetime Dream # 12 of my list of 155: I will own a black, flame top Carvin California guitar. I will custom design the guitar through Carvin's Custom Shop. I will put black chrome tuning heads on the top and I will get a special cord, matching the color of the guitar, and I will use this guitar for songs that are tuned down to a "Drop-D" tuning.
Completed On: July 16, 2008.
This was the first electric guitar that I purchased as a part of my Lifetime Dreams. I had originally wanted a black flame top Peavey Wolfgang Guitar to match the red one I have- and a gold as well. I wanted a complete collection of Red, Black and Gold to go with my favorite and fraternal colors. Unfortunately Eddie Van Halen split with Peavey and he took his Wolfgang guitar with him. Carvin’s California Guitar is a wonderful replacement however.
The thing about Carvin Guitars is that pictures never ever do them justice… ever. When I pick up Petra (yes I name my guitars) or any other of my Carvin Guitars- there’s so much craftsmanship in your hands that you cannot help but appreciate its beauty. I love playing this wonder of wood, and I keep her in the “Drop D” for songs that have that low bottom “D”. I love songs with that tuning I have to say.
Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum - Terracotta Army
- The Terracotta Army, discovered in 1974, dates back to the late 200s BCE and is estimated to contain over 8,000 life-sized terracotta soldiers, along with horses and chariots, buried near Emperor Qinshihuang's mausoleum. Discovery:
The Terracotta Army was discovered in 1974 by local farmers in Lintong County, near Xi'an, China.
Time Period:
The figures date back to the late 200s BCE, during the Qin Dynasty.
Estimated Number:
Estimates suggest that the three pits containing the Terracotta Army hold more than 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses, and 150 cavalry horses.
Location:
The Terracotta Army is located near the mausoleum of Emperor Qinshihuang, which is situated at the northern foot of Lishan Mountain, 35 kilometers northeast of Xi'an, Shaanxi Province.
Construction:
The mausoleum was constructed over 38 years from 246 to 208 BC.
Significance:
The Terracotta Army is a world-renowned discovery and a significant part of the mausoleum complex, which is considered the largest imperial tomb in China.
Ongoing Excavations:
Excavations continue, and experts believe that thousands more life-size figures could still be buried.
Museum:
The Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum was established to preserve and showcase the site and its artifacts, including the Terracotta Army.

Leaving Valkenburg I made my way to Nurburg for my visit to Nordschleife. On the way I drove through Kerpen, home of Michael Schumacher, 7 times Formula 1 World Champion.
Quite chuffed, as I made my way through the town I was soon to discover Michael's Kart & Event Center. I was just in time for it to be open, so a quick dash into a race suit & I was on his track, his karts for some great memories.
