April #conservationlands15 #bucketlist: Bodie Hills, California, for Wildflowers, Wildlife and One-of-a-Kind Ghost Town!

California’s Eastern Sierra region is a dramatic transition zone between the snowcapped granite spires of the Sierra Nevada and the endless sagebrush covered uplands of the Great Basin. A visit at the right time of year will reward visitors with a diversity of wildflowers.

One great wildflower viewing area is just north of Mono Lake and east of Yosemite in the rolling Bodie Hills – hills being an understatement since they top out at over 10,000 feet! Because of their high elevation, wildflower blooms are later here than much of California – typically arriving in May-June on the lower slopes and into July on the highest peaks. Several back roads traverse the area and offer access to view the displays of phlox, penstemmon, and paintbrush to name a few of the many wildflower species. More than 100,000 acres of BLM lands cover most of the Bodie Hills and include several wilderness study areas.

This year’s bloom promises to be early and short due to the dry winter across much of California. However, even if you miss the peak bloom, there is no shortage of things to see in the area. Bodie State Park is the site of the best-preserved ghost town in California, and arguably in the U. S. Wildlife viewers can see antelope, mule deer, and if lucky, get a glimpse of a sage grouse. If you visit later, around early October, crisp clear nights will turn the scattered aspen stands to gold, giving a second opportunity to see the Bodie Hills in color.

For Flickr Group Roulette: Bucket List. Hmmmmm, a 117-day cruise around the damn world? We'll take it!!

Another top photo taken on our charter yesterday - buy a Gift Voucher for yourself for Christmas and come and join Calypso Star Charters - the only one day shark cage dive in Australia that is Eco Certified with 4 Eco Certified Guides plus a Licence to Burley which is what keeps the sharks around our boat - come and join us.

Nice, Monaco, Menton, Sanremo, Imperia - the road follows the coast from France into Italy. It's one of those drives you ideally do with a few weeks up your sleeve to soak up each town, village and port.

I drove up through the middle of Italy from the coast to eventually arrive at Lake Garda, the largest inland lake in Italy.

Lecco was home base during my trip to the Monza Formula 1 Grand Prix. About 30 minutes away from the track it was not too far, but gave you a feeling of being on holiday.

A lovely town with the lake and mountains as a backdrop, wonderful town square & great food.

In order to make a Mille Crêpe Cake I had to also make another item my Foodie Bucket List... Pastry cream! This is what Cool Whip dreams of being: www.suziethefoodie.com/foodie-bucket-list-pastry-cream-fi...

One day, I hope to get a shot of the aura borealis. I find it to be somewhat challenging since several conditions need to be just right, including no clouds, no moon, nice weather, cooperation from the sun, and a decent location that lets you look at the northern skies. Not to mention that we would most likely be doing this in the middle of the night, and we like our sleep. ☺️ My husband suggested that we scout out a couple local lakes this afternoon. Not sure if this spot will work out, but I thought it was a pretty location. This is a panoramic shot.

Rebecca Croon feeling some seriously strong g's! 😎🌊

The BLM’s National Conservation Lands include some of the West’s most spectacular landscapes, from national monuments to wilderness to national scenic and historic trails. The BLM conducts day-to-day management on about 6,000 miles of congressionally-designated national scenic and historic trails in 14 states. Nearly every BLM field office manages one or more of these trails, and works closely with other Federal agencies and partners.

What makes a trail officially scenic or historic? National Scenic Trails provide outdoor recreation opportunities as well as conservation of the significant geographic characteristics, such as desert and forests. National Historic Trails follow as closely as possible and practicable the original trails or routes of travel of national historic significance.

The BLM manages more miles of National Historic Trails than any other Federal land management agency. Pictured here, two well-known historic trails managed by the BLM – the Iditarod National Historic Trail in Alaska and the Oregon National Historic Trail through Idaho, Oregon, and Wyoming. The Oregon Trail Backcountry Byway in Idaho and National Historic Trails Interpretive Center in Casper, Wyoming, are great stops along the Oregon Trail for education and recreation.

The drive from Nurburg to Stelvio starts off fairly normal along the various Autobahn's with the unlimited speed sections and VW's, BMW's and the like flying along at 150km/h+

Although then you get closer to the Alps and things change dramatically with beautiful mountain roads, tunnels, passes and more.

On the Sea to Sky highway from Vancouver to Whistler

Our 4 week trip of the pacific Northwest (BC, WA, OR) and California, July-August 2013. View the trip in order here: www.flickr.com/photos/22983840@N08/sets/72157635363403630/

Whistler was a great venue for getting outdoors and sport, and the main reason for its inclusion in our tour.

We stayed in the Deta Whistler Village Suites, which were spacious and well positioned in the main village.

Whistler Downhill Park is known the world over for its amazing downhill trails. Some serious machines needed, complete with full face and armour. Bonkers and expensive - but so good, we did it for two days!

We also enjoyed the XC routes on our "rest days - and you can ride a hardtail on these.

The atmosphere was something the boys enjoyed: lots of sports and sporty young folk. The nights were great fun, when we finally stopped riding. Both boys said they want to come back to spend a gap year here!

Bucket list goal-Make a hand heart with your significant other. This one is kinda crappy, plus I couldn't hold still haha. Would like to try it again sometimes and get a better shot.

My sister

My friend Jenny found a place that teaches trapeze lessons. My sister and I were ready to fly! Today was the day and it was AWESOME!!!

In Venice, land of gondolas and merchants, glass artisans have always thrived. In fact, the island directly north of the city center, Murano, is known as “Glass Island.” Since the 1200s, Venice’s major talents in the glass industry have set up shop here, first making one-of-a-kind pieces for roya...
