Located in Creemore, Ontario is this single lane girder bridge built in 1913. It was decided to replace the bridge with a modern structure, but the locals appealed to the Township to restore this one, and it now appears that it will be saved.

The Ha'penny Bridge (Irish: Droichead na Leathphingine), known later for a time as the Penny Ha'penny Bridge, is a pedestrian bridge built in 1816 over the River Liffey in Dublin, Ireland. Made of cast-iron, the bridge was cast at Coalbrookdale in Shropshire.

Originally called the Wellington Bridge (after the Duke of Wellington), the name of the bridge changed to Liffey Bridge. The Liffey Bridge remains the bridge's official name to this day - though it is still commonly known as the Ha'penny Bridge.

The 16th Street Bridge over the Allegheny is one of the most unique and photogenic of Pittsburgh's many bridges. It was built in 1923, with ornamentation designed by Warren and Wetmore.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge is a suspension bridge, which opened on 8 December 1864, spanning the Avon Gorge and the River Avon, linking Clifton in Bristol to Leigh Woods in North Somerset, England. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the bridge is a grade I listed building and forms part of the B3129 road.

The idea of building a bridge across the Avon Gorge originated in 1753. Original plans were for a stone bridge, and later iterations were for a wrought iron structure. In 1831, an attempt to build Brunel's design was stopped by the Bristol riots, and the revised version of his designs was built after his death and completed in 1864. Although similar in size, the bridge towers are not identical in design, the Clifton tower having side cut-outs, the Leigh tower more pointed arches atop a 110-foot (34 m) red sandstone-clad abutment. Roller-mounted "saddles" at the top of each tower allow movement of the three independent wrought iron chains on each side when loads pass over the bridge. The bridge deck is suspended by 81 matching vertical wrought-iron rods.

Two men were killed during the bridge's construction; since opening it has gained a reputation as a suicide bridge. It has plaques that advertise the telephone number of The Samaritans and above the railings on the bridge there are anti-climb barriers. The Clifton Bridge Company initially managed the bridge under licence from a charitable trust. The trust subsequently purchased the company shares, completing this in 1949 and took over the running of the bridge using the income from tolls to pay for maintenance. The bridge is a distinctive landmark, used as a symbol of Bristol on postcards, promotional materials, and informational web sites. It was also used as a backdrop to several films and television advertising and programmes. It has also been the venue for significant cultural events such as the first modern bungee jump in 1979, the last ever Concorde flight in 2003 and a handover of the Olympic Torch relay in 2012.

Completed in 1874, the Eads Bridge at St. Louis was a giant step forward in the development of steel arch bridges. It was conceived by James B. Eads, a man who had never built a bridge. The three tubular arches span the Mississippi in leaps 502, 520 and 502 feet. Here it still stands firm in the spring floods of the mighty river.

The road bridge over the Dee at Tongland. Built by Thomas Telford in 1806.

This bridge spans the Des Moines from Clark County, Missouri into Lee County, Iowa. It served many years as a toll bridge, It is still in use even though a couple of years ago the new concrete bridge behind it was built as a part of the Avenue of the Saints leading from St. Louis to St. Paul, Minn. This is one of the 14 large prints that I was commissioned to photograph and print and frame for our local library in Kahoka of our counties local landmarks. Now its one the months on a calender that I am selling locally.

...my instinct when trying to get silhouette shots is to saturate max and set cloudy WB. The result of this handheld shot is below (it is actually a different shot, but the result is the same). However, the water looks more blue in reality and contrasts with the sky. The achieve this I edited the image in RAW by changing the WB to white fluorescent light and changing the dynamic range (how do I do this on the camera?)

The edited image looks better (and more like what I saw in reality - especially the water), but the tones still look somewhat fake (?).

South Wales Caving October 2015

There is a lot of duck hunting in the fall here and fishing in the spring. This would be a nice area for bird, maybe alligator shots with a zoom lens. Hmmm, might have to go for a boat ride.

Wandsworth Bridge crosses the River Thames in London in a North-West to South-East direction. It joins the areas of Battersea, near Wandsworth Town Station, in the London Borough of Wandsworth, on the South of the river, to the areas of Sands End and Parsons Green, in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, on the North side. Wandsworth Bridge is on the A217 route and is the busiest bridge in London (by numbers of vehicles crossing daily).

The first Wandsworth Bridge, designed by Julian Tolme was opened in 1873 and featured five cast iron spans on iron based piers with brick abutments. By 1880 a five ton weight limit was imposed on the bridge and a decision taken to replace it. However, it was not until 1935 that work started on the current structure, by Sir T Peirson Frank, which opened in 1940. This is a three span steel and concrete cantilever, 197 metres long. It was widened in 1970. (Wikipedia)

Road Bridge over the river Tees in Yarm

Built by Walter Skirlaw, Bishop of Durham in 1400.

During the Civil War the Royalists won a battle for control of the bridge on Feb 1st 1641.

In 1803 the stone bridge was replaced by a new iron one. This new bridge collapsed soon after it was built on the 12th January 1806. Fortunately the old bridge had not been destroyed and stands to this day.

The Vizcaya Transporter Bridge connecting Portugalete and Las Arenas (Getxo) on opposite banks of the Nervion River between the river mouth in the Bay of Biscay and the city of Bilbao.

This was the world's first Transporter Bridge, built in 1893 and designed by Alberto Palacio to provide a means of linking the two towns across the river without disrupting maritime traffic to and from Bilbao and without the need to build a massive structure with long ramps.

164 metres long, the bridge is still in use and the gondola can transport six cars and several dozen foot passengers, making the crossing in about 90 seconds.

As well as crossing the bridge in the gondola it is also possible to travel up in a lift in the towers on either side and walk across the top of the bridge.

Only 23 bridges of this type have been built in the world and only 12 of these survive to this day (this includes one now converted to a lift bridge, and one which was designed as a transporter bridge but has not operated as one).

4 of these 12 transporter bridges can be found in the UK, the only one of these being in use at the time of posting this picture is the Middlesborough Transporter Bridge, built in 1911.

The transporter bridges at Newport (1906) and Warrington (1916) are both out of use, and the most recent - the Royal Victoria Dock Bridge in London (1998) - was designed to allow use as a transporter bridge but is only in use as a high-level footbridge.

Photo taken looking East. In "Buildings of England - Lincolnshire" Pevsner says "SUSPENSION BRIDGE, spanning the new river Ancholme, now at the end of a track. It is an early example of a suspension bridge (1835-6) and the only one by Sir John Rennie, built as part of the improvement to the Ancholme Navigation begun in 1825 and completed in 1844. Construction was supervised by Adam Smith. It remains very much in its original form, with rusticated stone piers forming archways over the road and its original ironwork and single plank deck.".
