Walk fast. Stay on your lane. Don't look like a tourist. This was my mantra coming into the city.

And that was what I was channeling when I finally got off my first metro subway ride after my 6 hour sleepless flight from Los Angeles. This was my first stop, and one of my two ultimate to do's here in greatest city on earth. Big pedestrian signs were spray painted on the boards I was walking on, the bike lane immediately on my left. In spite of the 9 degree Celsius gloomy weather, there were bikers whizzing by me, and determined runners overtaking me from behind. And here I was walking happily alone, welcoming myself on foot to the island of Manhattan.

I had to stop. I don't care if the world passed by me and they curse at me. 'Stupid tourist. It's just an effin bridge.' I just had to stop, because I knew --- I always knew --- at some point I will be standing here. I didn't know how or when I'd get here. I just knew. And somehow, at that moment, it's all happening.

I was on Brooklyn Bridge, walking into New York City. Yes, I've longed dreamed singing along Alicia Keys and mean it and in that instance I did, "If I can make it hear, I can make it anywhere." New York is literally staring at me. Me and my daypack containing what is presently all my worldly possessions. That moment I felt so small, yet so invincible.

Here's to my little big moment carrying through 2013. It's January 1st. Happy New Year!

The English Bridge

The English Bridge in Shrewsbury, crosses the river Severn and is thought to have been built around 1770 on the site of a far earlier bridge.

The original Bridge, thought to date back to the Norman era, became known as the Stone Bridge in medieval times. It had a huge gate tower and drawbridge, accommodation for a gatekeeper and his prisoners and a number of houses and shops.

Following this bridges collapse in 1546, under the strain of the great flood an 18th century replacement was built. This bridge was opened in 1774 but had two major problems making it unsuitable for modern traffic. Firstly it was too narrow and secondly it had a large hump in the middle. Originally this would have been designed to allow passing boats to pass underneath.

In the 1920's it was taken down stone by stone and the masonry was carefully numbered to be reused in the new structure. The Bridge was then rebuilt, with a shalower gradient, reducing the orignal gradient by five feet and increasing the width to 26ft.

It is somewhat ironic that the English Bridge was officially opened by a member of the Royal Family passing over it in a coffin. On October 26th 1927 a souvenir programme was produced in anticipation of the royral visit by Edward, the Prince of Wales, who would officially open the Bridge.

However, two days before, on October 24th 1927, the Marquess of Cambridge, Brother to the Queen died, having been taken ill at his home, Shotton Hall, near Harmer Hill.

The visit by the Prince of Wales was subsequently cancelled. However, on October 27th the coffin of the Marquess passed over the bridge which had an honour guard of the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry and the Shropshire Yeomanry on its way to Windor for the funeral.

The Welsh Bridge, across the town was built in the 1790's, near the site of the fortified bridge that appears in old paintings of Shrewsbury.

The United Reformed Church.

Since 1863, the church by Shrewsbury's English Bridge has been a visible, and beautiful, sign of people's commitment to the worship at God and the services of others.

We became Shrewsbury United Reformed Church in 1972, uniting Congregationalists, Presbyterians and later, the Churches of Christ. An active and growing membership, including a large Junior Church, aims to show people that God loves them and to welcome them into his family.

Beautiful as our church is, a building suitable for the mid-nineteenth century has its drawbacks at the start of the twenty-first. In recent years we have been bringing our building into line with modern standards of access and facilities. We hope you will find it a pleasure to use. We plan to make it even better over the next few years.

The Wakeman School and Arts College is a co-educational comprehensive school located in Shrewsbury, the county town of Shropshire, England. The school is the only secondary school in the town centre, located just to the east of the English Bridge. There are about 450 pupils on roll and the age range is 11–16 years.

The school has recently been awarded the ‘Artsmark Gold’ by Arts Council England,[1] and the development of a state-of-the-art recording and media studio for the school, as well as a new ICT facility, was completed during the summer holidays 2008.[2]

Following its successful bid for specialist college status, the Wakeman School became the Wakeman School and Arts College, with specialisms in Visual and Performing Arts and Music.

In Aug 2010, demolition will begin on the historic Hugh Chatham Memorial Bridge aka Elkin bridge, a two-lane, trestle structure, built in 1931 across the Yadkin River. It directly connects Jonesville in Yadkin Co. to Elkin in Surry Co. In 2005, it was condemned & deemed unsafe for vehicular traffic but enjoyed even more as a community boardwalk on the river for folks throughout the Yadkin River Valley area.

In these last few days, people have been showing up in the evenings & wknds, cars on side of the road, taking pics, families posing on the bridge, & paying last respects. It's sad to see it go after 80 yrs as a landmark!

Bridge House is possibly the most photographed building in the Lake District, and a popular subject for many artists including Turner. A tiny building, originally an apple store for nearby Ambleside Hall, was built over Stock Beck to escape land tax. Once five mills were driven by the power of Stock Beck and some may still be seen nearby. It is said that at some time a family with six children lived here in the two rooms.
