Walk fast. Stay on your lane. Don't look like a tourist. This was my mantra coming into the city.

And that was what I was channeling when I finally got off my first metro subway ride after my 6 hour sleepless flight from Los Angeles. This was my first stop, and one of my two ultimate to do's here in greatest city on earth. Big pedestrian signs were spray painted on the boards I was walking on, the bike lane immediately on my left. In spite of the 9 degree Celsius gloomy weather, there were bikers whizzing by me, and determined runners overtaking me from behind. And here I was walking happily alone, welcoming myself on foot to the island of Manhattan.

I had to stop. I don't care if the world passed by me and they curse at me. 'Stupid tourist. It's just an effin bridge.' I just had to stop, because I knew --- I always knew --- at some point I will be standing here. I didn't know how or when I'd get here. I just knew. And somehow, at that moment, it's all happening.

I was on Brooklyn Bridge, walking into New York City. Yes, I've longed dreamed singing along Alicia Keys and mean it and in that instance I did, "If I can make it hear, I can make it anywhere." New York is literally staring at me. Me and my daypack containing what is presently all my worldly possessions. That moment I felt so small, yet so invincible.

Here's to my little big moment carrying through 2013. It's January 1st. Happy New Year!

Tower Bridge (built 1886–1894) is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, from which it takes its name. It has become an iconic symbol of London.

The bridge consists of two towers tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical component of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. The bridge's present colour scheme dates from 1977, when it was painted red, white and blue for the Queen Elizabeth II's silver jubilee. Originally it was painted a mid greenish-blue colour.[Wikipedia]

St Katherine's Dock security guards prevented me from using my tripod at this spot. Another 50m towards the bridge was fine.

In Aug 2010, demolition will begin on the historic Hugh Chatham Memorial Bridge aka Elkin bridge, a two-lane, trestle structure, built in 1931 across the Yadkin River. It directly connects Jonesville in Yadkin Co. to Elkin in Surry Co. In 2005, it was condemned & deemed unsafe for vehicular traffic but enjoyed even more as a community boardwalk on the river for folks throughout the Yadkin River Valley area.

In these last few days, people have been showing up in the evenings & wknds, cars on side of the road, taking pics, families posing on the bridge, & paying last respects. It's sad to see it go after 80 yrs as a landmark!

I've always thought that this bridge looks like it is made entirely of triangles. It's also all wooden.

ODT - Symmetry -- This is a theme I clearly need to work on, as it was really difficult to find any pictures I'd taken with symmetry. In fact, it seems like I go out of my way to avoid symmetry!

Designed by William Henry Hunter and constructed in 1915, the Warrington Transporter Bridge stands 76ft above water, 30ft wide and has a span of 200ft. This privately owned bridge connected the two sides of the Joseph Crosfield & Sons chemical works but was closed in 1964. It is now a grade II* listed building and protected as a scheduled ancient monument. One of only a handful left in existence. Week 5/52: Local Landmarks
