Checkpoint Charlie: Starting on 22 September 1961 at most famous East German-West German border crossing, allied soldiers registered members of the American, British and French armed forces before their trip to East Berlin.
It should be noted that I did not take the original photograph.

This stretch of road was midway between the two borders ... a sort of no man's land. I'm not sure if it belonged to Chile or Argentina, but the sign said it was part of Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi, which is in Argentina.

To leave the United States of America, walk through a self locking metal turnstile gate without needing to show any id at this point, half way across the Rainbow Bridge there is a bronze plaque on the bridge fence indicating the United States / Canada International Boundary Line, this area is also notated with the Canadian flag flying next to the USA flag. To enter Canada after crossing the International Boundary Line you must show your passport to customs agents before entering the country of Canada, there is no fee for this process but when you want to cross the same bridge back into the USA there is a .50 cent fee.
Walking across Rainbow Bridge takes under10 minutes, the time to show your passport to the agent at the Canadian border and the agents at the USA when returning to The United States of America cannot be determined as the time varies based on how many border agents or people trying to enter the country at any given time.
There are excellent views of Niagara Falls from both the USA and Canada, but they are both very different, the view of the falls from Canada shows a more natural less built up look, where as the view of Niagara Falls from the USA shows more of a city built up look.

The GülsünKaramustafa survey puts in perspective the two disparate yet concurrent aspects of her artistic career: paintings made with the local audience in mind and a more intrepid experimental practice, which coalesces with this specific series of paintings. The exhibition spans the artist's entire oeuvre including painting, collage, installation, and video works from the early 1970s to today.

I loved the framing of this shot, with the busy checkpoint behind the sign. Pity the Homeland Insecurity Agent wasnt as thrilled at me taking pictures of the checkpoint. He shut me down right quick as soon as I started taking pictures and shooed me away.
Thing is, if I was a terrorist, I sure as hell wouldnt stand there with a honkin' big DSLR with a massive lens looking obivous as the day is long. I'd be standing there "talking" on my c-phone, snapping pics all subtle like with it held up to my ear.
Ah well - more Security Theater at work. At least he let me keep my pictures and didnt subject me to the cavity search.

At the south end of Wolfe Island, there is seasonal ferry service (May to October) across the St. Lawrence River to Cape Vincent, NY; so people arriving here via there ferry would be greeted by this sign.

Day 1
New York - Corning/Watkins Glen - Niagara Falls (426 miles)
Passengers will be picked up in New York and New Jersey in the morning. We will head north from New York in the morning to the Corning Glass Museum in Corning, NY to learn about glassmaking (during the winter) or Watkins Glen State Park (during the summer). From there, we will continue on to Niagara Falls, NY where we will see Thundering Water Cultural Show.
Corning, NY
Corning Museum of Glass This museum in western New York is dedicated to the history, art, and science behind glassmaking. Its collection contains more than 45,000 objects, some of which date back millennia. It was founded in 1951 and sees 400,000 visitors annually.
Watkins Glen, NY
Watkins Glen State Park Glen Creek has carved a dramatic gorge into the Watkins Glen hillside, resulting in a large, cavern-like network of rock formations. Visitors can take guided tours, do some hiking, or just spend some time in the park.
Available in Summer only. Tour goes to Corning Glass Museum during winter.
Niagara Falls, NY Known and loved for both their power and their beauty, the Niagara Falls offer an experience unlike any other. More water tumbles down from the Niagara River every minute than any other place in the world.
Thundering Water Cultural Show Niagara, like many impressive wonders of nature, is a sacred place for the local Native American people. This show uses dance as a storytelling medium through which to showcase the impact that the falls have had on native culture.

Niagara Falls - Niagara Falls Canada - Toronto (83 miles)
We will continue our tour Niagara Falls by heading into Canada to take the Hornblower Cruise boat ride and see an informational movie at the IMAX Theater. We will also ascend the Skylon Tower. The tour then departs for Toronto, ON, one of Canada's largest cities. There we will visit the CN Tower and guests will have the option to take a Lake Ontario Cruise. During the winter when the cruise is not running, we will instead visit Casa Loma. We will have dinner in historical Chinatown.

The Rainbow Bridge across the Niagara River connects Niagara, Ontario to Niagara, New York. It is an international landmark and impressive architectural feat. In addition to private vehicles, pedestrians and bikes can cross the bridge for a small toll.
Niagara Falls IMAX
This amazing movie experience, presented on an unbelievable IMAX screen, chronicles more than 12,000 years of history and examines human interaction with the falls from ancient time through the people-- like you-- who come to see them today.
Hornblower Niagara Cruise

This fellow with a life jacket on, plunged into the Rio Grande to carry more souvenirs to Big Bend Park. He had a decorated walking stick he tried holding above the water, but the flooded rio was too dip and it got dunked.
This is the home-made ferry used to carry US tourists into Mexico and residents of Boquillas del Carmen, Coahuila, into th US for work. Unfortunately, this unofficial border crossing was closed in the aftermath of 9/11. This puts a tremendous hardship on the residents of Boquillas del Carmen who are dependent on access to the National Park for work and on cross-river tourism for income. (Taken in December 1996)
Update January 2011: Mexicans now leave small displays with one or two dozen items close to the river with a recycled plastic bottle for "donations." Sellers come across the river on horseback on a regular basis to check on their displays and to pick up the money. According to press reports, the small border crossing at Boquillas will be reopened in April 2012.

Border Encuentro - November 10-12, 2017
Day 2 of the "Border Encuentro" began with a Veterans For Peace led march from about 1 mile north of the border in Nogales, AZ to the border wall. There, the march split with hundreds following the wall on the US side and hundreds more crossing the border en-mass into Mexico and assembling across the wall from the US marchers. The stage had been assembled on the Mexican side and as speeches were given and music performed a massive mural was wheat pasted onto the backdrop with the theme of the weekend... "Tear Down the Walls. Build Up the People." 30 minutes into the performances, 100's more arrived with the Caravana Internacional por la Unidad de los Pueblos, marching along The Wall and carrying banners. Originating in Oaxaca on October 31, the Caravana Internacional arrived at the Border Encuentro after 12 days traveling the length of Mexico.
The "Border Encuentro", organized by SOA (School of the Americas) Watch, originated in 1990 as a yearly protest outside the gates of Fort Benning in Georgia. 2017 is the 2nd year that the gathering has moved to the US/Mexico border region in Arizona. Thousands from across the country gathered to take a hard look at the massive human costs of border militarization and US immigration policies and to protest the long and continuing history of US intervention in the affairs of Latin America.

Crossing the border into Canada from the USA across Rainbow Bridge.
To get to Canada from the USA, cross Rainbow Bridge from Niagara Falls, New York USA into Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada. To leave the United States of America, walk through a self locking metal turnstile gate without needing to show any id at this point, half way across the Rainbow Bridge there is a bronze plaque on the bridge fence indicating the United States / Canada International Boundary Line, this area is also notated with the Canadian flag flying next to the USA flag. To enter Canada after crossing the International Boundary Line you must show your passport to customs agents before entering the country of Canada, there is no fee for this process but when you want to cross the same bridge back into the USA there is a .50 cent fee.
Walking across Rainbow Bridge takes under10 minutes, the time to show your passport to the agent at the Canadian border and the agents at the USA when returning to The United States of America cannot be determined as the time varies based on how many border agents or people trying to enter the country at any given time.
There are excellent views of Niagara Falls from both the USA and Canada, but they are both very different, the view of the falls from Canada shows a more natural less built up look, where as the view of Niagara Falls from the USA shows more of a city built up look.

About these 2 days of the trip
Day 1
New York - Corning/Watkins Glen - Niagara Falls (426 miles)
Passengers will be picked up in New York and New Jersey in the morning. We will head north from New York in the morning to the Corning Glass Museum in Corning, NY to learn about glassmaking (during the winter) or Watkins Glen State Park (during the summer). From there, we will continue on to Niagara Falls, NY where we will see Thundering Water Cultural Show.
Corning, NY
Corning Museum of Glass This museum in western New York is dedicated to the history, art, and science behind glassmaking. Its collection contains more than 45,000 objects, some of which date back millennia. It was founded in 1951 and sees 400,000 visitors annually.
Watkins Glen, NY
Watkins Glen State Park Glen Creek has carved a dramatic gorge into the Watkins Glen hillside, resulting in a large, cavern-like network of rock formations. Visitors can take guided tours, do some hiking, or just spend some time in the park.
Available in Summer only. Tour goes to Corning Glass Museum during winter.
Niagara Falls, NY Known and loved for both their power and their beauty, the Niagara Falls offer an experience unlike any other. More water tumbles down from the Niagara River every minute than any other place in the world.
Thundering Water Cultural Show Niagara, like many impressive wonders of nature, is a sacred place for the local Native American people. This show uses dance as a storytelling medium through which to showcase the impact that the falls have had on native culture.

Day 2
Niagara Falls - Niagara Falls Canada - Toronto (83 miles)
We will continue our tour Niagara Falls by heading into Canada to take the Hornblower Cruise boat ride and see an informational movie at the IMAX Theater. We will also ascend the Skylon Tower. The tour then departs for Toronto, ON, one of Canada's largest cities. There we will visit the CN Tower and guests will have the option to take a Lake Ontario Cruise. During the winter when the cruise is not running, we will instead visit Casa Loma. We will have dinner in historical Chinatown.

Skylon Tower
This observation tower on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls offers a bird's-eye views of one of the world's favorite natural wonders. The tower stands 520 feet from street level and 775 feet from the bottom of the falls.
Rainbow Bridge
The Rainbow Bridge across the Niagara River connects Niagara, Ontario to Niagara, New York. It is an international landmark and impressive architectural feat. In addition to private vehicles, pedestrians and bikes can cross the bridge for a small toll.
Niagara Falls IMAX
This amazing movie experience, presented on an unbelievable IMAX screen, chronicles more than 12,000 years of history and examines human interaction with the falls from ancient time through the people-- like you-- who come to see them today.
Hornblower Niagara Cruise
Get ready to get wet: this world-famous boat ride takes passengers as close to the falls as it is possible to get. Formerly Maid of the Mist, Hornblower now runs Niagara cruise operations on the Canadian side of the Falls.
Skylon Revolving Restaurant Lunch
The impressive Skylon Tower, jutting into the air above Niagara Falls, features the Revolving Dining Room, a one-of-a-kind eatery the makes a full revolution every hour. Sitting just below the observation deck, guests can enjoy views and food!

Disused border crossing from Chałupki (PL) - to Bohumín (CZ). In January 2007 motorized traffic was diverted to a new bridge a few hundred meters west. On 21 December 2007 the control booths were left by border guards under the Schengen Agreement, allowing for free passage (at this location pedestrians and cyclists only).
The new (to the photographer, at least, in January of 2013...) route into Tijuana, Mexico from the San Ysidro, CA Border Station. (AKA: San Ysidro Transit Center Station) # 1 of 7 Taken by a Nikon D40x with a Sigma 17-70mm ƒ 2.8-4 OS HSM macro lens (at 26)
You walk up this former Greyhound bus street to the left (in the direction of the "public parking" [which isn't there any more...] arrow)
You'll have lots of company (at least at 5:08 PM (1708), when this shot was taken) for the trip, BTW.
