The border crossing between Tecate, CA and Tecate, BCN, Mexico, seen from the Mexican side of the border. One notes the (relative!) lack of security in this pre-9/11 shot. (taken 9/9 or 10/2001) Taken by an Olympus OM-1MD with a Zuiko 50mm ƒ1.8 on Fujicolor Superia 400. Exposure unrecorded and long forgotten. Negative scanned into computer by an HP G4010.
Yellow splotch on the upper left is on the negative - possibly a light leak of some sort, or an artifact of storage for 9+ years in less than ideal conditions.
Checkpoint Charlie is the best known of the former border crossing stations between East and West Berlin.
In October of 1961 Soviet and American tanks faced off against each other here during the Berlin Crisis. Thankfully the situation was resolved peacefully.
The checkpoint ceased to mean anything official with the fall of the Berlin Wall, though today it serves as a tourist attraction and has a nearby museum.
This shot is looking into the former American sector from East Berlin. The two guys in uniform holding flags are there to get tourists to pay them two euros for a photo with them.
Crossing the border into the Commonwealth of Virginia from Washington, D.C. on Memorial Avenue across Boundary Channel Bridge which goes over the Boundary Channel off the Potomac River into Arlington County Virginia.
Washington, D.C. formally the District of Columbia is the capital of the United States of America since July 16, 1790.
Washington, D.C. is not in a state but there is a movement for statehood which would have the name of the 51st state as New Columbia.
The state of Maryland donated land to create what is now known as Washington, D.C.
Commonwealth of Virginia had also donated land which was returned to Virgina in 1846.

Crossing the border from USA into Canada on foot across Rainbow Bridge.
To get to Canada from the USA, cross Rainbow Bridge from Niagara Falls, New York USA into Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada. To leave the United States of America, walk through a self locking metal turnstile gate without needing to show any id at this point, half way across the Rainbow Bridge there is a bronze plaque on the bridge fence indicating the United States / Canada International Boundary Line, this area is also notated with the Canadian flag flying next to the USA flag. To enter Canada after crossing the International Boundary Line you must show your passport to customs agents before entering the country of Canada, there is no fee for this process but when you want to cross the same bridge back into the USA there is a .50 cent fee.
Walking across Rainbow Bridge takes under10 minutes, the time to show your passport to the agent at the Canadian border and the agents at the USA when returning to The United States of America cannot be determined as the time varies based on how many border agents or people trying to enter the country at any given time.
There are excellent views of Niagara Falls from both the USA and Canada, but they are both very different, the view of the falls from Canada shows a more natural less built up look, where as the view of Niagara Falls from the USA shows more of a city built up look.

Art Metropole is pleased to announce a new print media program ADVERTISING BY
ARTISTS. Conceived and curated by Toronto artists Andrew Zealley, ADVERTISING BY
ARTISTS comprises four visual artists and five international print publications. The
resulting 16 ad-works will appear over the course of 15 months. Artists participating in
ADVERTISING BY ARTISTS include Cecilia Berkovic, Stephen Ellwood, Nestor Kruger
and Yoko Ono. The original ad-works created for the project are slated to appear in
selected issues of Border Crossings, BUTT, Cabinet, They Shoot Homos Don't They?,
and WIRE. The completion of the project will be documented by a book, published by
Art Metropole, featuring the complete set of ad-works, plus artist and program notes.
"ADVERTISING BY ARTISTS is an is an international print-media project conceived
to draw attention to Art Metropole's online presence and services - as well as a vehicle
for the selected artists to express their own ideas," states Zealley. "Over the coming
15-months, we look forward to challenge the conventions of advertising with pure
imagination. The rules? Each ad-work must include Art Metropole's logo and website
address... the rest is... art."
Each ad-work in the ADVERTISING BY ARTISTS series will also be featured online at
artmetropole.com - accompanied by online information about the artists and links to
related information.
ADVERTISING BY ARTISTS commences with the new issue of Border Crossings (Vol.
26/#1, Winter 2007), the Winnipeg-based contemporary art magazine that has created
a reputation for provocative artist-driven content. The new issue, released on February
2, 2007, features an ad-work by Toronto-based artist, Nestor Kruger, positioned within
the section of the magazine that is occupied by traditional advertisements. Kruger's
ad-work features many of the signifying gestures found in conventional ads, but
without the usual copy. Instead, the ad-work's image (lifted from the internet), is
accompanied by columns of horizontal lines which imply the space normally occupied by
text. A brief dialogue between William F. Buckley and Noam Chomsky is featured in the
print piece.
"The pulled caption is a viewer's comment/synopsis of the 1969 debate between
Buckley and Chomsky," explains Kruger. "[It's something] that I watched on youtube."
Each of the artists selected to participate in ADVERTISING BY ARTISTS are renown for
their media savvy - from Stephen Ellwood's sophisticated installation text works and
book-works, and Cecilia Berkovic's cultural/information-based imagery, to Yoko Ono's
famous global media campaign like WAR IS OVER (IF YOU WANT IT) and IMAGINE
PEACE.

I had to wait till we were a bit away from the powerful base of the falls before I could try my first selfie. It was bloody difficult taking the heavy dSLR out from under the dripping wet rain poncho and then aim it at you and try to locate the shutter button with wet, shivering hands, made worse by strong winds. Still, this is the best I could manage. (Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Nov. 2015)
The Millennium Bridge, built over a tributary of the River Blackwater, connects two People’s Millennium Forests, at Favour Royal in County Tyrone and Derrygorry just across the border in County Monaghan. It thereby created a new link between Northern Ireland and the Republic. It was officially opened by Bríd Rodgers, then the Northern Minister for Agriculture & Rural Development, on 24th October 2001.
The project is the largest attempt to date to restore Ireland’s native woodlands. Almost all of the 16 Peoples Millennium Forests are located on old native broadleaf woodland sites. Favour Royal was one of two forests in the North included in the project, the other being Castle Archdale in Co. Fermanagh.

We will head north from New York in the morning to the Corning Glass Museum in Corning, NY to learn about glassmaking (during the winter) or Watkins Glen State Park (during the summer). From there, we will continue on to Niagara Falls, NY where we will see Thundering Water Cultural Show.

Corning Museum of Glass This museum in western New York is dedicated to the history, art, and science behind glassmaking. Its collection contains more than 45,000 objects, some of which date back millennia. It was founded in 1951 and sees 400,000 visitors annually.
Watkins Glen, NY
Watkins Glen State Park Glen Creek has carved a dramatic gorge into the Watkins Glen hillside, resulting in a large, cavern-like network of rock formations. Visitors can take guided tours, do some hiking, or just spend some time in the park.
Available in Summer only. Tour goes to Corning Glass Museum during winter.

The tour then departs for Toronto, ON, one of Canada's largest cities. There we will visit the CN Tower and guests will have the option to take a Lake Ontario Cruise. During the winter when the cruise is not running, we will instead visit Casa Loma. We will have dinner in historical Chinatown.

Here in Portal, North Dakota, 2,072 miles away from the southern terminus in Charleston, South Carolina, are the final 1,000 feet of U.S. Highway 52 before it comes to an end at the border with the Canadian province of Saskatchewan.
Having take a complete U turn, the Hornblower has now come round to the opposite bank. Wow, can you believe we went that close to those mighty falls? And man, that was some dunking with all the strong water falling all over us! And this was a point further reinforced by our wet ponchos, wet trouser legs due to constantly lifting the poncho to take pictures and then have water accumulated in folds of the poncho running into our shoes and trouser lets, and of course the shivering due to strong winds on wet bodies and clothes! Day 2 - Border Wall from the Mexican Side - Nogales, AZ to Nogales, Sonora
November 11, 2017 (Veterans Day)
SOA (School of the Americas) Watch -
Border Encuentro - November 10-12, 2017
Day 2 of the "Border Encuentro" began with a Veterans For Peace led march from about 1 mile north of the border in Nogales, AZ to the border wall. There, the march split with hundreds following the wall on the US side and hundreds more crossing the border en-mass into Mexico and assembling across the wall from the US marchers. The stage had been assembled on the Mexican side and as speeches were given and music performed a massive mural was wheat pasted onto the backdrop with the theme of the weekend... "Tear Down the Walls. Build Up the People." 30 minutes into the performances, 100's more arrived with the Caravana Internacional por la Unidad de los Pueblos, marching along The Wall and carrying banners. Originating in Oaxaca on October 31, the Caravana Internacional arrived at the Border Encuentro after 12 days traveling the length of Mexico.
The "Border Encuentro", organized by SOA (School of the Americas) Watch, originated in 1990 as a yearly protest outside the gates of Fort Benning in Georgia. 2017 is the 2nd year that the gathering has moved to the US/Mexico border region in Arizona. Thousands from across the country gathered to take a hard look at the massive human costs of border militarization and US immigration policies and to protest the long and continuing history of US intervention in the affairs of Latin America.

Crossing the border into Canada from the USA across Rainbow Bridge.
To get to Canada from the USA, cross Rainbow Bridge from Niagara Falls, New York USA into Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada. To leave the United States of America, walk through a self locking metal turnstile gate without needing to show any id at this point, half way across the Rainbow Bridge there is a bronze plaque on the bridge fence indicating the United States / Canada International Boundary Line, this area is also notated with the Canadian flag flying next to the USA flag. To enter Canada after crossing the International Boundary Line you must show your passport to customs agents before entering the country of Canada, there is no fee for this process but when you want to cross the same bridge back into the USA there is a .50 cent fee.
Walking across Rainbow Bridge takes under10 minutes, the time to show your passport to the agent at the Canadian border and the agents at the USA when returning to The United States of America cannot be determined as the time varies based on how many border agents or people trying to enter the country at any given time.
There are excellent views of Niagara Falls from both the USA and Canada, but they are both very different, the view of the falls from Canada shows a more natural less built up look, where as the view of Niagara Falls from the USA shows more of a city built up look.

On both sides there are border posts, however the controls are very lax, the Bosnians never looked at my passport, and the Serbs know most passers anyway personally and just hold them for a brief chat. However, they searched through all my belongings very thoroughly after I had crossed again to Bosnia and back later in the evening (there was no restaurant on the Serbian side) and questioned me for a quarter of an hour or so… The next day there was less trouble and I could even take some photos (which is not always easy at borders).
(D) Eine Fussgängerbrücke verbindet die bosnische Stadt Zvornik mit ihrem serbischen Vorort Mali Zvornik. Auf beiden Seiten hat es kleine Grenzposten, die Kontrollen sind allerdings sehr lasch, die Bosnier schauten meinen Pass nie an, und auch die Serben kennen die meisten Passanten ohnehin und halten sie höchstens für einen kurzen Schwatz auf. Bei mir hingegen durchsuchten sie – als ich am Abend nochmals kurz nach Bosnien ging – alles, was ich dabei hatte (zum Glück nur Fotoapparat und Portemonnaie…) und fragten mich eine Viertelstunde aus… Am nächsten Tag verlief der Grenzübertritt wieder problemlos und ich konnte sogar einige Fotos machen (ist ja an Grenzen immer eine etwas heikle Sache).

To leave the United States of America, walk through a self locking metal turnstile gate without needing to show any id at this point, half way across the Rainbow Bridge there is a bronze plaque on the bridge fence indicating the United States / Canada International Boundary Line, this area is also notated with the Canadian flag flying next to the USA flag. To enter Canada after crossing the International Boundary Line you must show your passport to customs agents before entering the country of Canada, there is no fee for this process but when you want to cross the same bridge back into the USA there is a .50 cent fee.
Walking across Rainbow Bridge takes under10 minutes, the time to show your passport to the agent at the Canadian border and the agents at the USA when returning to The United States of America cannot be determined as the time varies based on how many border agents or people trying to enter the country at any given time.
There are excellent views of Niagara Falls from both the USA and Canada, but they are both very different, the view of the falls from Canada shows a more natural less built up look, where as the view of Niagara Falls from the USA shows more of a city built up look.

We are approaching the Niagara Falls now. When Annie Taylor took a wild ride over Niagara Falls in a barrel back in 1901, she was the first in long line of daredevils to do so — not all of them as successful (the only thing left of one barrel-rider at the bottom of the falls was a right arm). With a vertical drop of more than 188 feet and a volume of water reaching 225,000 cubic feet per second, Niagara Falls probably seemed like the most powerful waterfall in the world at the time. Nowadays however, the Niagara Falls is dwarfed in comparison to some of the world’s raging rapids. More on this in the next caption. (Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Nov. 2015)

The informal border crossing into Boquillas del Carmen, Coahuila, Mexico, in December 1996. In the background is the Sierra del Carmen range. Trucks and horses are waiting on the Mexican side of the river for a ride into Boquillas del Carmen which is about a 15-minute walk away. Unfortunately, this unofficial border crossing was closed in the aftermath of 9/11. This puts a tremendous hardship on the residents of Boquillas del Carmen who are dependent on access to the National Park for work and on cross-river tourism for income. (Taken in December 1995)
Update January 2011: Mexicans now leave small displays with one or two dozen items close to the river with a recycled plastic bottle for "donations." Sellers come across the river on horseback on a regular basis to check on their displays and to pick up the money. According to press reports, the small border crossing at Boquillas will be reopened in April 2012.

At the end of the bridge over the "returning to the US" roadway, you're dropped in the center island: turn right for a short walk to this building, and walk up the ramp up and over the "into Mexico" roadway.
The orange truck is a Chevy Colorado, used by the Mexican immigration service.

Three lonely guards at an even lonelier and more desolate checkpoint. This place was the definition of boredom. The poor guards were doing their military service. For 18 months or so they would sit at the post. No, electricity, no running water, no cards. Lots of cigarettes and an aging guard dog from Russia. I felt bad for them.
Interstate 5 will be rerouted to meet with the new El Chaparral Port of Entry in Tijuana.

We will continue our tour Niagara Falls by heading into Canada to take the Hornblower Cruise boat ride and see an informational movie at the IMAX Theater. We will also ascend the Skylon Tower. The tour then departs for Toronto, ON, one of Canada's largest cities. There we will visit the CN Tower and guests will have the option to take a Lake Ontario Cruise. During the winter when the cruise is not running, we will instead visit Casa Loma. We will have dinner in historical Chinatown.

Crossing the border into Canada from the USA across Rainbow Bridge.
To get to Canada from the USA, cross Rainbow Bridge from Niagara Falls, New York USA into Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada. To leave the United States of America, walk through a self locking metal turnstile gate without needing to show any id at this point, half way across the Rainbow Bridge there is a bronze plaque on the bridge fence indicating the United States / Canada International Boundary Line, this area is also notated with the Canadian flag flying next to the USA flag. To enter Canada after crossing the International Boundary Line you must show your passport to customs agents before entering the country of Canada, there is no fee for this process but when you want to cross the same bridge back into the USA there is a .50 cent fee.
Walking across Rainbow Bridge takes under10 minutes, the time to show your passport to the agent at the Canadian border and the agents at the USA when returning to The United States of America cannot be determined as the time varies based on how many border agents or people trying to enter the country at any given time.
There are excellent views of Niagara Falls from both the USA and Canada, but they are both very different, the view of the falls from Canada shows a more natural less built up look, where as the view of Niagara Falls from the USA shows more of a city built up look.

Day 2 - Border Wall from the Mexican Side - Nogales, AZ to Nogales, Sonora

Border Encuentro - November 10-12, 2017
Day 2 of the "Border Encuentro" began with a Veterans For Peace led march from about 1 mile north of the border in Nogales, AZ to the border wall. There, the march split with hundreds following the wall on the US side and hundreds more crossing the border en-mass into Mexico and assembling across the wall from the US marchers. The stage had been assembled on the Mexican side and as speeches were given and music performed a massive mural was wheat pasted onto the backdrop with the theme of the weekend... "Tear Down the Walls. Build Up the People." 30 minutes into the performances, 100's more arrived with the Caravana Internacional por la Unidad de los Pueblos, marching along The Wall and carrying banners. Originating in Oaxaca on October 31, the Caravana Internacional arrived at the Border Encuentro after 12 days traveling the length of Mexico.
The "Border Encuentro", organized by SOA (School of the Americas) Watch, originated in 1990 as a yearly protest outside the gates of Fort Benning in Georgia. 2017 is the 2nd year that the gathering has moved to the US/Mexico border region in Arizona. Thousands from across the country gathered to take a hard look at the massive human costs of border militarization and US immigration policies and to protest the long and continuing history of US intervention in the affairs of Latin America.

At the right, is a fence closing off a bridge along the Canada-USA border. Prior to 9-11, folks from both sides of the border were able to traverse either way without too much fuss.
