Fort Hancock began as a military establishment named Camp Rice in 1882, along the San Antonio-El Paso Road. Camp Rice had formerly been located at Fort Quitman, and had been established by troops of the 10th U.S. Cavalry "buffalo soldiers". Camp Rice did not grow after moving to this community, and rarely hosted more than 60 men. It was renamed Fort Hancock in 1886 after the death of General Winfield Scott Hancock, a hero of the Battle of Gettysburg. The fort was damaged in a flood that year, but rebuilt. It was damaged again by fires in 1889, then abandoned in 1895.[4]

A post office was established in 1886, with Albert Warren as postmaster. In 1887, a new railroad depot was built at Fort Hancock, and by 1890, a town had grown up around it and had a population of 200, a general store, a hotel, and a meat market.

By 1914, the population of the town had dropped to 50, though by 1940, it had increased to 500.[5]

This beautiful bridge, dedicated to pedestrians and cyclists, was completed in 2004 and spans the Rhine River connecting Strasbourg in France with Kehl in Germany. There is a park on either side of the Rhine where the bridge is located. This was taken from the Kehl side.

Thanks as always to everyone who stops by to view, fave, and comment on my photos - it is much appreciated.

Whenever we cross into the U.S. at the Peace Arch crossing I see this unusual art installation and since its not a place you can stop to take pictures, unless of course you like to live dangerously :) the only way to photograph it is from the car as you cruise through, mopping your brow, sighing in relief that you weren't strip searched or had your Nexus card revoked for smuggling in an errant orange :)

The bridge which spans the Rhine River between Strasbourg, France and Kehl, Germany links the two halves of the Jardin des Deux Rives (Garden of the Two Banks). This is a view from the bridge looking east towards Germany and was taken at sunset. The bridge was jointly built by Strasbourg and Kehl and is frequented by cyclists and walkers.

The atmosphere in this night scene at the immigration border between India and Nepal was incredible chaotic. There were cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles even horse carriages going through the border. There were immigration officers walking through the fog between cars directing traffic to prevent immigration traffic bottlenecks and keep the flow moving. Despite the madness, we managed to pass through the border in less time than some of the conventional airports I have flown.

This old border town cafe has been abandoned for a few years now. If my memory hasn't completely failed me, I do believe I ate here in the mid 1980s. The food was as hot as the temperature outside! Presidio,Texas. 6.9.2015.

Beautiful viewpoint of Tergi Valley. From this point, you can admire the stunning valley where the Tergi River (also known as the Terek) carves its path through the mountains. The landscape is breathtaking, with steep rock walls, vast grasslands, and in the distance, the snow-capped peaks of the Greater Caucasus. At the viewpoint in Tergi Valley, there is also a cross, a recognizable symbol that you’ll find in several places throughout the Georgian Caucasus. This cross not only marks a panoramic vantage point but also often holds religious or commemorative significance. Georgia has a deep Orthodox Christian tradition, and crosses like this are often placed on mountain tops, along hiking routes, and near villages as a protective symbol and a sign of faith. It’s the perfect place to rest, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and take some beautiful photos. In the fall, the trees turn golden, and in the winter, snow covers the surroundings, giving each season its own unique charm. Tergi Valley is located near the Larsi Checkpoint, the border crossing between Georgia and Russia. Daily, travelers, trucks, and pilgrims passed through here, following the ancient route through the Darial Gorge. The valley, once a strategic point on the ancient Silk Road, has seen traders, warriors, and monks come and go over the centuries. Despite the proximity to the border, it feels as though time has stood still here.

The Tergi Valley, located near the Larsi Checkpoint, is a remarkable area of natural beauty and historical significance. The valley lies in the Georgian Caucasus, near the border between Georgia and Russia. The Larsi Checkpoint is the main border crossing between the two countries, and it marks a key passage through the Darial Gorge, a dramatic and narrow gap between the mountains that has been a significant route for centuries. Historically, the Tergi Valley was an important location along the ancient Silk Road, which facilitated trade and cultural exchange between Europe and Asia. Throughout the centuries, the valley saw many travelers, from merchants and soldiers to pilgrims and monks, passing through this strategic passageway. Today, the Tergi Valley is a popular destination for hikers, adventurers, and those seeking to explore the unique landscapes and historical sites of the region.

My son and I went to the US to go hiking for Mother's Day. It was a great day until we tried to return home. This is the line up behind us to the Canadian border, there were probably at least 50 cars ahead of us. People driving down the wrong side of the highway to go to the state park by the border to wait out the line up. We waited 1.5 hours to get across.

Val Thorens located in the Tarentaise Valley, Savoie, French Alps, is the highest ski resorts in Europe, at 2300 m altitude.

Given the high altitude of Val Thorens and the Glacier de Péclet the resort is often regarded as "snow sure". With the winter season lasting into early May and summer skiing on the glacier.

Many of its slopes face north and north-west, providing for good snow conditions. This means that the slopes are not as sunny, so the resort tends to attract a crowd more interested in skiing than "terracing." However, the resort itself faces south, and many people enjoy sitting outside in the sunshine when they have finished skiing. As well as a combination of 68 marked runs, Val Thorens also 5 terrain parks giving access to bordercross tracks, quarter pipes and jumps.

Val Thorens is the most international ski resort in France: more than 70% of its visitors are foreigners. While one will find people from all over the world in Val Thorens, British, Scandinavian, Belgian, Dutch and German tourists make up the majority.

July 1988. Fort Hancock-Porvenir International Bridge crossing the Rio Grande and connecting Fort Hancock TX and El Porvenir, Chihuahua, Mexico. Built in 1936. 510 feet with wooden pilings.

It may not exactly look like one, but this is a border crossing. On this side of that little bridge is Germany, on the (not so) far side are the Netherlands. The only indication that you enter an other country is the board with the name of that little town. In the Netherlands those sign boards are blue with white letters, while in Germany they are orange with black letters.

Even during the Covid 19 crisis the border with the Netherlands remains one of the few you can cross without fuss.

Due to lack of an M41 in Záhony, the shop is required to put a spare loco into service during the day for the passenger service and they selected M62 187 for the job. In the picture it is just arriving from the Ukraine back to Hungary with train 647.

Pre-covid I yo-yo'd in and out of China for work every few months. Depending on what we were doing we'd fly in, catch the train from Hong Kong, or very occasionally, be driven in a hire car.

Driving in China is an experience in itself and we once did an 8-10 hour trip back from Guangzhou when we were taking a lot of stuff with us for an event we were organising. It was mostly sedate but when traffic merged, the usual calm demeanor of our driver went awol.

I'm pretty sure this is that trip.

The mighty Zambezi River plunges over a basalt rock ledge and drops 108 metres down into chasm. It is recognized as the largest sheet of falling water in the world. Traditionally it is known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (meaning 'Smoke that Thunders'). During high-water season, which runs from about February to July depending on the rain, a dynamic cloud of mist rises high above the Falls.

The falls straddle the international Zimbabwe-Zambia border. Nearby are the towns of Victoria Falls Town in Zimbabwe and Livingstone in Zambia. In the dry season, there may be little or no water flowing over the falls!

During our visit in June, it certainly was thundering. It makes your heart beat faster, your spirit lift and your mind marvel. With passports checked at the border, we walked back from the Zambian side towards our hotel in Victoi ria Falls town along a wide pedestrian walkway unaware that there was an herd of elephants moving through the area. Suddenly we were confronted by a big bull elephant crossing the path 50m ahead! I stood still and asked Marg to quickly and quietly drop down into the nearby railway cutting, and as she did, a group of 8 female elephants that was following the bull appeared. Standing utterly still and watching agape, I realised that should he decide to charge there was no way I could outrun him, so I ensured I froze, hopefully to cause less challenge. He kept going and the females followed.

We lived to tell the tale, but many locals were sheltering on the road overpass over the railway line and they held their breath as they watched two unaware tourists walking into the path of the herd. It created lots of relieved conversation later in town and at the hotel!

The Poker Creek - Little Gold Creek Border Crossing features one of the few jointly-built single building customs ports of entry along the Canada–US border. There is a one-hour difference in standard time zones at this border, which is only open in summer during the 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. period (Alaska time). The Border Post has warnings as far south as Whitehorse, Yukon, alerting travelers that the Border is closed between 9pm and 9am (Yukon Time) and there's absolutely no entry between those times.

I snapped this photo on the Taylor Highway (known as the "Top of the World Highway" to many Alaskan's.) Don't let the word "highway" fool you. This road is full of potholes, washboard surface, no guard rails, and no shoulders in which to pull over. The scenery is breathtaking - and you are able to look down into deep valley's, that give you the feeling that you are flying in a small plane. It is a trip everyone should make, at least once.

Two miles from our home in Connecticut we can sit on a bench overlooking Rhode Island, just across the Pawcatuck River!

We don't know how long the Christmas lights will remain lit,

but how wonderful seeing the additional hearts on the bridge!

Last night's brief stroll was a perfect way to end the celebration of my husband's birthday, after a scrumptious Thai meal at our favorite restaurant in Westerly, RI (a few blocks away in front of the railroad station which now also houses a local cooperative art gallery)! We were further entertained by a flock of geese flying in an abstract *V* formation in the sky above, as the Boston to New York train passed by in the distance!

After leaving Jerusalem, you arrive to the Israeli border post some half hour away by bus or taxi. They process the passport and may check the luggage and then you have to take a short bus ride to reach the Jordanian post, where another passport and luggage control takes place. You then take a bus or taxi to reach Amman, about an hour away from there.

This is in the Mackenzie Mountains. Although many people believe the Mackenzie Mountains to be a northern extension of the Rocky Mountains, they actually are not at all geologically related to the Rockys.

This was taken on the Alaska Highway, on possibly one of the most isolated stretches of it, between Tok, Alaska, USA and Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, taken in the middle of the Yukon Territory of Canada. This was quite literally in the middle of nowhere, with rest areas about 50 miles apart, with nothing but random outhouses with no plumbing, some random gas stations, hotels, restaurants, and lodges with a combination of these services here and there along the highway. Cars travel on this highway relatively frequently, although some areas are less traveled than others.

This picture was taken in beautiful Whitehorse, the capital "city" (basically it's a town) of the Yukon Territory in Canada, with a population of only about 30-35,000 people. It takes up about 70% of the Yukon Territory's population, and is one of the major stopping points along the Alaska Highway.

The 500 meters long Mária Valéria bridge over the Danube river, joining Esztergom in Hungary with Štúrovo in Slovakia, my first time ever to reach another country walking. This was in late 2006, so one of the last times there were border crossing checks between Hungary and Slovakia before the Schengen area kicked in there.
