The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved henna for direct application to the skin. It is unconditionally approved as a hair dye, and can only be imported for that purpose. Henna imported into the USA which appears to be for use as body art is subject to seizure, and at present it is illegal to use henna for body art in the U.S., though prosecution is rare.

As a one-time special treat we let them color on themselves as much as they wanted. I was actually pretty impressed with the quality of Eloise's work. She achieved that facial hair effect herself -- without the benefit of a mirror! (Parental pride doesn't discriminate.)

The body has been transformed after losing 35 pounds. The weight hasn't changed in the past few weeks, but the shape has and the waist is down from 37" golf shorts to 32".

This body of work is a means of encapsulating a sort of wanderlust, or desire for disconnection, by going into the wild. By staging myself in the landscape I solve the dilemma of connecting with my environment. However, the laptop and headphones I employ represent an impasse with nature. Can you feel at one with the natural world while checking your email? Is it harder to maintain a relationship with the cosmos with more technological engagement? I believe an all-encompassing relationship with technology creates an immersive cushion that can blind us to the environments we are a part of.
The activity of connecting on a social networking site, browsing the day’s weblines, or absorbing new viral messages is highly immersive. Doing it within the context of the grandeur of nature introduces an absurdity element. It is this absurdity that interests me. At times I feel incapacitated by the torrent of decontextualized information streaming from the internet and television. Focusing on irrelevance and incoherence is easy when it’s at your fingertips. It seems our modern quandary is to reconcile our hyper-self-aware states with an ecological sustained relationship. These photos offer a personal reflection on these issues.
