May A Tisket A Tasket

Mosaic tiles on the floor at the entrance to The Block Arcade, Melbourne, built early 1890's

For this quarter of the 4x5 bee Betsy asked for blocks in bright red and bright yellow.

I used a paper-pieced pattern from eQuiltPatterns called "Wichita Planes."

this block feature a scrap of fabric from the Eliza's quilt, the daughter of one of the commissioners

Used flannel instead of wool for the snowman.

This one I love because it is multi-directional! Had a lot of fun putting this one together because it was so easy!

Wrote a little more here.

Hexagon rose block for alysowl9 (Alice) for July in Bee Scrappy and Scrap Happy Bee quilt bee groups. Imitating the Tropicana rose (the photo makes the fabric look more red than it really is).

Empty space and a former register/work space

On a Sunday afternoon....since they've just been wasting away in the corner of my sewing room for the past 5 months, I decided to shake the dust off my blocks, and see if I could remember how this puzzle fit together. It was a little confusing at first, so then I had to go get my sketch to decide which block went where. This is just a small part of what will hopefully, someday, be Michael's JD Graduation Quilt!

The Block Arcade

We quickly discovered that "arcade" in Australia has a very different definition than in the U.S. Australian Arcades are shopping malls. Those we visited, such as this one near our hotel in Melbourne, are elegant and include incredibly fine restaurants. This one was built in 1891.

Celine asked for a scrappy X Block with bright colours. Hope you'll like them :o)

I loved making the x and + block for Megan's month in the Sew Beautiful Bee so I decided to make five more for the ladies in my hive of the 4x5 bee, 3rd quarter. LOVE how they turned out!

Blocks were made with the help of the lovely ladies from the Bee Modern Block Exchange!

Will be in the post tomorrow with the siggy block

These brass plates are being put into the pavements outside the old houses from which Jews were deported to extermination camps during the rule of the Nazis. The idea is that you almost trip over them, then read the names of the people who used to live there, thus also bowing your head. I like this idea of a memorial, because it brings the whole holocaust down to a local and personal level. This action is not limited to Darmstadt, but is spread across all of Germany. I thought black and white best fitting. Other data on the blocks includes date of birth, where the person was deported to, and date of death (if known). Please view in full size.
