Mickey mouse bento! 08 is the year of the mouse in Chinese Zodiac.

I've been collecting Etsuko Furuya prints for quite some time now and finally decided to combine them all in these fun and colorful quarter log cabin blocks. I originally was going to make a largish lap quilt, but now I'm considering using it as wall art... Blogged here.

Morning prep time: 2 minutes. Full blog entry and tips for packing delicate fruit here.

Blythe Hanami Party

Hanami is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers. In modern-day Japan, hanami mostly consists of having an outdoor party beneath the cherry blossoms.

Morning prep time: 7 minutes. Details here at Lunch in a Box.

I shared this with my son, who was very excited about the little pepper "trees". The tarako rolled egg was a little too salty/savory for him, but he ate it up when it was dipped in some Lizano sauce (ah, the magical Lizano!).

Onigiri (rice ball), hard-boiled egg, blueberries and edamame. I made these with commonly available ice cream sandwich molds. They also do quadruple duty as cookie cutters, onigiri (rice ball) molds, and egg molds! See my blog entry for the how-to.

Packed in my son's new Thomas the Tank Engine bento box (270ml). Adult versions here and here. For my blog.

Takoyaki, Oktopus-Bällchen

Morning prep time: 10 minutes (plus 10 minutes cooling time to avoid soggy croquettes).

Packed for a friend and I for a flight from Columbus to Boston. I used deli containers from Whole Foods so we could simply toss the containers and not worry about bringing them back. More "every day bento" tips at Bento Yum.

Matches up with Bento #115, both made for an afternoon of shopping with my best friend.

Morning prep time: 5 minutes (15 minutes total for 3 lunches). Packed in a Japanese collapsible sandwich case; full details here.

Taking a page from Japanese bento cookbooks, I froze leftover spaghetti in foil liners set in mini muffin tins. Once they're frozen through, I put them in shallow tupperware for longer-term storage like this. Then I have a cache of homemade pasta ready to drop into my son's lunches when I'm looking for a red-colored dish. They thaw by the time he's ready to eat.

Full details on freezing spaghetti cups here.

Leftovers from our July 4th picnic shoved in a box. Recipe for vegetarian wraps and spinach artichoke dip at Bento Yum blog.

Wishing all my Flickr friends a very happy and safe holiday!

P.S. Sorry the Christmas Cards are going out a little late~! :)

Packed in my 600ml two-tier box. Toddler version here.

Morning prep time: 5 minutes (10 min. for 2 lunches). View of the closed case with lunch band here. Full blog entry here.
