For over 500 millions years before the Rocky Mountains were thrust upwards, a shallow tropical sea covered this area. Carbonate sediment deposited during this time became the limestone and dolomite rock we see in and around the canyon today. ~ Parks Canada ~
Marble Canyon is a narrow canyon that Tokumm Creek flows through. It is thought that this particular canyon was initially carved by glaciers and further eroded by the Tokumm Creek.
Because of the erosion, there are several natural bridges over the canyon. The canyon is continually changing with further water/weather erosion and has rearranged the flow of the creek over the years. The water disappears and reappears as you wander through the canyon with some very deep gorges, very intriguing and beautiful.
The largest wading bird in North America, and measure about 1 - 1.5 m (3.3 - 4.9 ft) in height, 97–137 cm (38 - 54 in) in length, and 2.1–2.5 kg (4.6 - 5.5 lbs) in mass.
Herons fly with deep, slow wingbeats and with their necks folded in an S-shape. They are usually solitary birds and are most vocal when mating, otherwise you would never know they are there. They tend to breed in colonies of about 100-500 birds in marshes and wetlands. We have a large rookery in Beacon Hill Park in Victoria that is very interesting to walk through during mating season and after the chicks hatch.
They hunt by wading slowly through shallow waters, remaining immobile until a fish swims close enough, and then striking quickly with their neck outstretched to pluck the fish out of the water.

The Alouette River has a significant place in the cultural heritage of the area. The #Katzie First Nation have historically depended on the salmon of the river and have maintained spiritual, cultural and economic ties to the river. The valley was part of a travel corridor for First Nations people between the Lower Fraser River area and the Lillooet area.

Photo taken from Hwy 4 above Sprout Lake in British Columbia, on Vancouver Island. This helicopter is recovering trees that have been cut and bringing them down to the lake below. Most of the area forests have been harvested, then re-planted like the trees in the background.
