Banff National Park is located in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta. It was the first National Park in Canada, established in 1885. It contains some of the most dramatic scenery in North America.
A Massive male Elk in Banff National Park, Alberta.
We were loosing light fast, and I had actually put my camera back into my backpack and we were driving back to where we were staying, when we saw this guy off to the side of the road. I pulled my camera out as quick as I could and hopped out of the car. I had my ISO set to Auto (with a shutter speed of 1/250 or higher) and just put in Av, and dropped my Aperture as low as my lens would go (f4). Luckily my AF was set to zone.
Just as I brought my camera to my eye to take the shot the Elk began to retreat back into the forest. He must have been camera shy.
Not the sharpest shot ever, but my first sighting of a massive male elk with a rack like this. This image does not do his size any justice.

Cascade Mountain catching the last of the light
These were taken on a rushed visit to Banff. I was lucky enough to get to visit Calagry through work at the end of September. Me and work college couldn't resist a quick trip out to "The Rocky's"!! To be honest we did manage quite a lot in the 2 hours, a meal and a bit of sightseeing.
Would love to go back and actually stay in Banff!
One of the great things about Banff, is that if you know where to go you can often get lots of great shots (including close ups) of Elk and Rocky Mountain Sheep.
All comments are appreciated. TIA.

This picture was taken from the top of the mountain and you can see the Bow River winding through Banff and the falls.

At the start or end of many trips through Western Canada you could spend a week alone to experience all the natural beauty of Banff National Park.
We went to Banff yesterday for a day trip. This is behind the Fairmont Banff Hotel and an awesome site. We walked for hours and took in the fabulous natural sites along with the local cuisine. (Junk food)

cloudy evening @ Vermillion Lakes. Unfortunately, the smoke started rolling in and I don't have any great shots from here.

We took a gondola to the top of a mountain that overlooked a large portion of the Canadian Rockies and Banff National Park.
A telephoto shot from Sulphur Mountain of the impressive Banff Springs Hotel. Another destination to put on your itinerary when in Banff.
Bow Falls is right below the hotel. The grounds are beautiful and the interior is unique and fascinating. Don't be surprised if you end up spending the entire day here.
"The Banff Springs Hotel is a luxury hotel that was built during the 19th century as one of Canada's grand railway hotels, being constructed in Scottish Baronial style and located in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. The hotel was opened to the public on June 1, 1888.
The hotel is located within a spectacular setting in the Rocky Mountains, just above the Bow Falls and close to thermal springs. The main view from the hotel is across the valley and toward Mount Rundle, which frequently is cited in geology books for its exposed and tilted ancient seabeds."
