The African fish eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer) is not a ‘true’ eagle but belongs to the Haliaeetus genus of sea eagles, alongside seven other species worldwide that include the American bald eagle and the Eurasian white-tailed eagle. This is one of the most ancient genera among all living birds. And it is a sight to behold.
African fish eagles are kleptoparasites, which is to say they habitually steal prey from other species. Common victims of this piratical behaviour include goliath herons and saddle-billed stork.
A fish eagle’s toes are coated in sharp barbs, called spiricules, which consequently help it to grasp fish and other slippery prey.
This bird’s conspicuous nature and charismatic presence ensure it figures prominently in the folklore and heraldry of several nations.
This beautiful African Fish Eagle was photographed during a photography safari on an early morning boat ride on Lake Baringo, Kenya.
Starting a series of wading birds, not all of them will actually be wading at the time the photos were taken. Audubon categorizes wading birds as a group of birds that have physical and behavioral adaptations for living on or near water. They are known for wading in shallow water to find food, and many have long bills, necks, legs, and toes, like herons, egrets, spoonbills, ibis, etc.

This shot was taken at Canoa Ranch Conservation Park south of Tucson, AZ.
One way to find the CG point ie. Center of Gravity of a vehicle longitudinal axis is to drive it over the edge of a scarp so that the front and rear wheels are in the air while the bottom of the vehicle between the front and rear wheels leans on the ground. If the rear wheels sits on the ground, CG is further to the aft and you may push the vehicle forward. If the vehicle tips over the edge, then CG was closer to the front. Should it so happen, get another vehicle and try again...
In order to access the clingers-only feeder, the squirrels have to grip onto a rather spindly branch which involves some strange squatting positions and sophisticated balancing skills. I liked the solar spotlight on this individual who had clearly been in quite a fight having lost the top of its right ear.
Bee-eater birds pluck bees (and other flying insects) out of the air with their strong, downward curved beak. Africa Rocks Aviary, San Diego Zoo.

Balance is an ability to maintain the line of gravity (vertical line from centre of mass) of a body within the base of support with minimal postural sway. Sway is the horizontal movement of the centre of gravity even when a person/object is standing still)

Hello friends. This is a photo that I took earlier this year for 52Frames. I really like this photo because it brings back good memories for me. It was a snowy morning, and I was alone at the park. I felt daring (I was balancing about 10 feet off the ground), creative and carefree. There’s something about photography that is so satisfying to me. Just being in the moment. I’m sure you can relate. :)
I also wanted to mention a moving film that I watched yesterday about a filmmaker who befriends an octopus. Sounds strange, I know, but it’s such a sensitive and wonderful film! I wept watching it because it made me think of all the missed opportunities humans have had with nature. How the whole world might be trying to communicate with us in the most meaningful way, but we are often too distracted, and lack the patience required to make those connections. It’s heartbreaking.
If you are interested, the film is called My Octopus Teacher and it’s available on Netflix. It’s beautifully filmed and narrated, and worth your time, I promise! ️

The grey squirrels never cease to entertain with their balancing skills. This one was managing to cling onto the thinnest of twigs whilst it consumed a handful of sunflower seeds. Very occasionally they lose their balance and fall to the ground but this one had the perfect tail for counterbalancing so it had breakfast without any unfortunate interruptions.
Finley loves his little balance bike , he goes really fast , he's had a couple of falls but gets up and carries on 👍😊

Aquarium in the museum with crabs next to the fire extinguisher ;-) ... it is not only taken with the cell phone* but also compared with the exhibition brochure, the Japanese visitors are very eager and conscientious in the art viewing ...
* every step is shared with the girlfriends and discussed via cell phone and coordinated, no matter whether just trying on a dress, or a little something is bought, or seen, or as here, a work of art thought ...
you know that when you have a daughter ;-) ...
Aquarium im Museum mit Krabben neben dem Feuerlöscher ;-) ... es wird nicht nur mit dem Handy* aufgenommen, sondern auch mit dem Ausstellungsbroschüre verglichen, die japanischen Besucher sind sehr eifrig und gewissenhaft in der Kunstbetrachtung ...
* jeder Schritt wird mit den Freundinnen geteilt und via Handy besprochen und abgestimmt, egal ob gerade ein Kleid anprobiert wird, oder eine Kleinigkeit gekauft, oder gesehen wird, oder wie hier, ein Kunstwerk Gedanken macht ...
man weiß das, wenn man eine Tochter hat ;-) ...

She hummed while pacing back and forth. The tiny house shivering from her unwelcomed presence.
"One, two..." she sung, "Stab it through..."
"Three , four.." She paused, hopping over the seat and balancing the little puppets. "Scream for more..." she giggled.
The sound of a wolf howling outside made her lick her lips. The hunger for blood, for a meal suddenly making her belly rumble in need. Just as she was about to stop playing with the puppets, she heard several other howls in response and pouted.
"Why did it have to be a pack..." she hissed, her tail swaying from side to side in obvious bloodlust.
"Too hungry...if only it was a lone wolf...I could have feasted..." she sighed dramatically, shaking her head. "Perhaps I could eat them all..."
The puppets were left unattended and off she went.
Scent of smell luring her closer to her prey. The first wolf that howled was on the ready, hair rising, tail swaying dangerously and teeth barred all ready to attack her. She lunged.
The fight was not so bad. Decorated with red she bit into the wolf's neck, pulling a chunk of flesh before tossing the body to the ground. Licking her fingers while listening to the heartbeat of the creature. She reveled in the kill.
"Should I put you out of your misery?" she cooed towards the wolf, leaning closer only giving the warrior one chance to bite at her face in a sad attempt at some victory.
Just as she was about to retaliate, a group of wolves attacked her all at once...
Lets just say that she underestimated a wolf pack. United together, never abandoning one another and most of all, fighting to the very end to survive. That's just something she doesn't understand about humanity or animals. Why do they fight so much? To what end?

Roseate Spoonbill trying out for the Olympic gymnastic balance beam competition. Unfortunately he was ruled ineligible because he's a bird.
My last post for a while. I'm using this as a good luck charm as we head to south Florida looking for some of this guy's relatives and a gator or two.
This Great Blue Heron landed in the top of a cedar tree but the branches were too flimsy to support its weight. So he struggled to maintain his balance. It was rather entertaining to watch for about 30 seconds until it flew off to find a more stable perch.
We observed this fun behavior at The Nature Conservancy's Cheyenne Bottoms Preserve in central Kansas.
