Everything about the Black-necked Stilt seems delicate -- from its incredibly thin stilt-legs to its slim wings and its needle-like bill -- yet it manages to thrive on the sun-baked flats around shallow lakes, some of them in searing climates.

Finds most food visually, picking items from surface of water or mud with bill; may spot items underwater, and plunge head into water to take them. A standing bird may grab flying insects as they go past.

It is found from the coastal areas of California through much of the interior western United States and along the Gulf of Mexico as far east as Florida, then south through Central America and the Caribbean to northwest Brazil southwest Peru, east Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands. The northernmost populations, particularly those from inland, are migratory, wintering from the extreme south of the United States to southern Mexico, rarely as far south as Costa Rica; on the Baja California peninsula it is only found regularly in winter

Particularly the North American populations of the black-necked stilt have somewhat declined in the 20th century, mainly due to conversion of habitat for human use and pollution affecting both the birds directly as well as their food stocks. But altogether, the population is healthy and occurs over a large range. This stilt is therefore classified as a Species of Least Concern by the IUCN

Protector of the Blueberries.

- Black bears are efficient berry-eaters, consuming up to 30,000 berries a day in a good year. They gather berries quickly, using their sensitive, mobile lips and swallowing them whole. The berries enter a two-part stomach, which grinds the pulp off the seeds.

The seeds pass through the digestive tract unbroken and able to germinate, making black bears important seed dispersers. Each summer, they spread the seeds of their favorite berries all over their home ranges. For very large-seeded fruits like Canada plum (Prunus nigra), black bears are probably one of the few species that can disperse the seeds.

A few adjustments in camera raw produced this image and thought it looked quite nice.

I prefer dogs to cats, but this was a present for a very close friend, so i tried my best to resemble his cat and make him happy :) folded from a 30x30 cm of Black tissue foil from N.terry's shop :) a beautiful paper!

While riding the back roads of Amherst County, Virginia, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, I ran across this black barn…I don’t see very many buildings painted black and considering the dreary winter sky I thought this would make a great black and white shot…

Black Skimmer (Rynchops niger) - Fort De Soto, Florida

Taken at Myakka State Park.....like many I really wish this butterfly would have allowed me to set up and try various angles....no such luck...so I took what I could get and hope to see him/her another day

First attempt at a cutout (mostly because it's the first time where it seemed warranted, almost shouting to be done).
