The XXL Cloud Factory

The Elektriciteitscentrale van Ruien, was a Coal-fired Powerplant located on the right bank of the Scheldt in the municipality of Ruien in East Flanders, Belgium.

Built in 1958, it was the most powerful thermal power plant in Belgium, except nuclear power plants.

The Powerstation of Ruien was part of the production fleet of the Franco-Belgian energy group Electrabel - GDF SUEZ.

The plant was equipped with six steam turbines.

The oldest units 1 and 2 (Escher Wyss) have been taken out of service and were already partially dismantled on my visit.

Units 3 and 4 (Escher Wyss) (as seen on the picture)

and 5 and 6 (BBC Brown Boveri) were each coupled to ACEC Charleroi alternators.

The four active remaining units generate some 800 megawatts back in 2013.

The Belgian State spent more than 180 million euros, between 2006 and 2012 , for the renovation of the plant, especially in terms of safety and the process of reducing CO2 emissions while respecting the standards of the Kyoto Protocol.

The plant finally closed its doors on 1st September 2013 and was then fully dismantled in the coming years.

My first visit, where i could take this, and many others pictures, took place on 20th may 2013, 3,5 weeks before its final shutdown.

It was a good thing to see the old lady on her last turns.
