I said I will be off Flickr for awhile, but not entirely... I will go to as many streams as I can...
I'm dedicating most of my time to writing testimonials... I'm way behind in reciprocating to friends that have written me testimonials... Testimonials will take lots of time... I want to write from my heart... not just words...
Thank you for all your support, your love and friendship...

Thank you margaret mendel... I change the title...
"The ocean and its rich foreground compose a familiar view. Dusk is my favorite time, sometimes sparked by the gentle green flash as the ocean finally receives the sun. The sky darkened, holding no crescent moon or evening star to make the situation impossibly pictorial. An approaching band of fog suggested that the next day might be one of silver and cool gray. Robinson Jeffers wrote of the "vast shield of the ocean." I do not forget its presence even during those many hours I am in my darkroom or at my desk, both so detached from the direct light of sun or sky. Every so often I emerge, reaffirm the splendor of the world, and then return to the caverns of my particular creativity."
- Ansel Adams
Hello! It's been awhile... awhile since I've been able to take the camera out for a spin and process the shots. I was up in the Tetons two weekends ago to celebrate our anniversary. To top it off, I got to celebrate the sunrise with these guys... I know some of you can hear them now! Nothing like the honk to punctuate a moment with nature... :P

This one took awhile. Found an old photo of mine from May 30, 2017. The raindrops were so heavy I actually checked the low temperature for that day to make sure we didn’t have some unusual freeze occur. ( We didn’t.) Anyway, cropped to get a macro and then used Adobe photoshop express flowers effect FL6. Cropped again to make square and finished with a scarlet border.
Not sure what type of wasp this is on a Hibiscus leaf. It would only stay still for the briefest of instants. Took awhile to be able to get this shot.

It's been awhile since I've posted a pix of "June" so here she is! I tried to take this of her in my "studio" ......but she kept shaking it off.
So, In between her nap on the top tier of her five foot condo which faces the front window where she can watch crows, I snapped this quick shot. 'Sorry about the busy background.
Have a GREAT weekend everyone! And happy 8/8/8
After not finding the orb weaver spiders out when I went back to the park I finally went to the second pond size lake covered in duckweed. Dozens of very tiny new frogs all along the shore. Most took off but did get a few. Sorry for so many frog photos, no more for awhile, I promise. :) All different ones. Had many not in focus. These are extremely tiny, only 2-3" in length at most. Took another very quick walk at the park before more severe weather forecast tonite.
Been closed down awhile. I hope there's some way the store front and sign can stick around.

"The two properties have long been in need of renovation and refurbishment: The original Guild cinema was built in 1919 (its second screen, in a detached building, was added in 1983); the Gables in 1925. Last year it was reported that Landmark was seeking historic landmark status from the city for the Guild, but it is not currently included on the City of Seattle’s landmark list."

hey just close the door
think back and just ignore
hey just close your eyes
think back and realize
what makes you think that it's okay?
don't start it off until real late
take the job but not the pay
forget the hours but not the day
hey just close your eyes
think back and realize
hey just close the door
back up and just ignore

Forest Blakk - If You Love Her
Take it
If she gives you her heart
Don't you break it
Let your arms be a place
She feels safe in
She's the best thing that you'll ever have
She always has trouble
Falling asleep
And she likes to cuddle
While under the sheets
She loves Pop songs
And dancing, and bad trash TV
There's still a few other things
She loves love notes and babies
And likes giving gifts
Has a hard time accepting
A good compliment
She loves her whole family
And all of her friends
So if you're the one she lets in
Take it
If she gives you her heart
Don't you break it
Let your arms be a place
She feels safe in
She's the best thing that you'll ever have
She'll love you
If you love her
On days when
It feels like the whole
World might cave in
Stand side by side
And you'll make it
She's the best thing that you'll ever have
She'll love you
If you love her like that
Kiss her with passion
As much as you can
Run your hands through her hair
Whenever she's sad
And when she doesn't notice
How pretty she is
Tell her over and over
So she never forgets
Take it
If she gives you her heart
Don't you break it
Let your arms be a place
She feels safe in
She's the best thing that you'll ever have
She'll love you
If you love her
On days when
It feels like the whole
World might cave in
Stand side by side
And you'll make it
She's the best thing that you'll ever have
She'll love you
If you love her like that
She'll love you
If you love her like that
She'll love you
If you love her
She'll love you
If you love her like that
She'll love you
She'll love you
She'll love you
She'll love you
If you love her
On days when
It feels like the whole
World might cave in
Stand side by side
And you'll make it
She's the best thing that you'll ever have

It’s been awhile since I have been to this part of cyberspace…I invite you to check out what has been keeping me busy, which is launching my own website, RobertSternPhotography. I also, or should I say finally, have joined the others who are on Facebook. If you have a couple of minutes, stop on by. It’s work in progress for both.
It's been awhile since I posted our smallest red dragonfly on its favorite perch, so here's the Cardinal Meadowhawk on Horsetail Grass, both 330 million years old.
Sympetrum illotum, the cardinal meadowhawk, is a species of skimmer in the dragonfly family Libellulidae. It is found in North and South America as well as parts of the Caribbean Island chain. And that's pretty much all that's said about this beauty.
Been away for awhile (flew back east for Thanksgiving with our kids). It's always kind of hard for me to get back in the swing with Flickr after time away. But here I am with more shots from our fall cross-country trip. We saw so much hay along the way, coming and going - fields and fields and fields... and also several hay trucks. This guy assumed - rightly! - that we would brake when he pulled out into our lane. This was in the Wenatchee Valley on our last day of driving home. Tinting black and white helped hide our dirty windshield. :-)
OK I took this photo awhile ago.
Honestly sometime I don't think people really give a fuck about people mental health or illnesses. People just sit on the other side of the computer screen telling lies threw and threw their teeth.
From the people I have gotten to know from the 10 years I have been in this world, I have build relationships. I have burnt some too. I'm not perfect
But The One Thing people can honestly say about me is I'm an honest and caring person that I am. I give my shirt off to those who need it.
I'm there when people just need to talk, cry or vent.
So I find it really funny when people want to tell false story about me.
Can I be a Bitch? You bet you ass I can be!!
Can I be Jealous? Sure why the fuck not!!!
Can I be Psycho? EVIL LAUGH!! Ask my Family!!
I was called the Ruthless one, The Watcher, The Spy. and my fav The FUCKING MUPPET!!.
But I am fucking Human.
I spent yesterday afternoon with this beautiful drake Barrow's Goldeneye. He was with a female. I was very excited to photograph this species. It's been awhile! Looking forward to getting more opportunities later. Click for large view.
It has been awhile since I posted aphoto on Flickr. A lot of projects and work have been catching up me that I didn't really have much time to take photos or to manage my Flickr account.
Hopefully things will be better in the next few weeks. In the meantime, have a wonderful weekend and stay safe! :)

I havnt posted anything in awhile because I have been in Europe for the last few weeks but have taken some photos in that time. On this rare sunny day I ventured out with a fellow German railfan who I had met in Peru to visit some of the diesel lines in former East Germany. We got very lucky and got two trains powered by the Soviet built 232 class "Ludmilla" diesels, easily the coolest locomotives still in regular service on DB. Here a loaded coal train departs Könnern after running around, the coal is destined for the power plant at a local sugar mill. Like in the US old cool power brings out the railfans and there was a big crowd that showed up to photograph the train.
Train 910 with 710 and 738 leading 48 cars has arrived at Trout Lake on June 17, 1984. I'd hopped on at the SW wye switch off the SOO main and rode down here onto the ex DSS&A . Once our rear end was in the clear a late running 911 that had been holding east of the M-123 crossing blasted off. If you download and enlarge this you can see 911's COFC cars in the far distance rolling over M-123. We are going to be sitting awhile as we also have to meet train 909 here and even though he was pulled up right behind 911 he will have a Mead and Marquette line pick up so will be at least an hour working the yard before he also heads west and we can back out of here onto the SOO main and then do our yard work. Arrival time on this 910 was 9:25 and it finally left for Soo yard at 12:10.
I thought this would make a great b/w conversion from the coloured original that I post awhile back!
Remembering ......Sometimes light color clouds and lens flare can come to gather to create a photograph that tells you to look and think. To me the clouds represent the fire and the blue swirls represent the sorrow and the small amount of light would be the hope, a bird at the top is looking over this scene. or maybe all of us. I have had this file for awhile, I guess I was saving it for this time.
Can we chat a minute? Friend to friend?
I've had a little thing on my heart for awhile that I really wanted to talk about so I'm taking a stab at it.
I've been a Christian my whole life. I know a lot of people hear that word and immediately cringe, break into hives or avoid direct eye contact. It's developed a bad connotation over the years, huh?
I get it.
I grew up in a very legalistic church that believed women shouldn't wear pants and that submission to a man meant doing whatever they tell you to do. Fraternizing with people who were not Christian was frowned upon as if you'd somehow contract their sin like the Black Plague. 'Burning in hell' was a phrase I heard more times than "I'd like to buy a vowel, Pat" and hate was most people's spiritual gift.
So, naturally... I grew up with issues. Major issues. Some might even label it religious trauma from the rigid dogma that was spewed from the pulpits I sat under.
I could tell you stories of people I grew up with and in my extended family who were abused physically, verbally and emotionally but told to keep quiet to 'save face' or thought speaking up wasn't submitting. It still happens today.
And it breaks my heart.
Don't get me wrong, my parents were great. Some of the kindness most thoughtful people on the planet who didn't buy completely into all that. They had their issues that they passed to me because their parents passed it to them but I've done everything I can to break that pattern in my own kids (a post for another time) and in my own heart.
But this isn't a post about the danger of religion or the dysfunction of a family. This is a post about Love.
If you're read this far... stick around for the good part. :)
Man has corrupted religion. Many have taken a book written by the God of the Universe and weaponized it to scare people into doing what they are told. It's not about love, it's about control.
But Jesus wasn't about that.
In fact, Jesus rebuked the Pharisees REPEATEDLY for worrying more about laws and rules than the people who were in need and hurting around them.
He SAW them. And He sacrificed himself for them.
He has always been for US.
Jesus doesn't care how you dress or how you look.
Jesus doesn't care about the color of your skin, nails or hair.
Jesus doesn't care where you live, or whether you bathed today.
He NEVER shied away from the sick, the hurting, the lame, the blind, the broken, the criminals... He SOUGHT them out.
And He loved them. Just like He loves you and me.
If you're a victim of religious trauma, I am so sorry. My heart absolutely breaks for you. That someone would take the Greatest Love of All and use it against you.
I know what it is like to lay in bed at night terrified by the words echoing in your head that you will never be good enough. To be frozen in fear that God was going to punish you for any infraction big or small. To be scorned for being female and looked upon as less.
Its wrong. It's cruel. And it is in NO WAY what Jesus would do.
So I guess I came here to say this...
It's not about church or religion.
It's about a relationship with Jesus. You and He.
And if you need someone to talk about that with, I'd love to chat.
Because He does love You for who you are. He looked down at His creation and thought the world needed one of you.
Think about that.
I didn't write this to preach - in fact, quite the opposite. The world is full of hurting, unseen, broken people who need to know that they are genuinely loved by God. And you really, truly are.
Love y'all.
It's been awhile since an Alice has been in the photostream.
This was taken awhile ago and has been in the queue to post. I made a midweek trek to the park to listen to this Alice sing. I had never seen her perform and I wanted to see how she compared to the other Alice's. In case you are wondering they are all good.
Photo wise this is uncropped and there are few adjustments in LR.
For awhile the Granite City taconite trains came to an end. With the uptick in the steel economy these trains are back running along the Aurora Sub. Here a heavy tac train out of National Steel's Keewatin, MN, Plant rolls south out of East Dubuque and pass Frentress Lake.
Been awhile since I uploaded a non special Gevo! I found my self down in Cairo Ohio on a nice cool spring morning, shooting what ever was going to go north in some great light. And M560 made a appearance and I headed to North End Cairo. A little bit after this I headed back north to Deshler to meet up with a good friend that I haven't seen in some time. It was all around a good morning down in Ohio. Despite the sky getting a mess late morning.
It's been quite awhile... I must say I miss our friendship. I miss you, but what I really miss the most is not just you or us but how it all was.

It's been awhile since I posted a picture of one of my children. I'm acutely aware that portraits are not as popular on Flickr. I've even had some well meaning messages sent to my Flickr inbox telling me I would have better success in choosing one or the other to post. I suppose this is true... I started an Instagram page for the sole purpose of landscapes @rachelbrokawphotography
but Flickr has and probably will always be a way of just sharing my favorite pictures no matter what they are. So I hope this doesn't bother anyone but there will always probably be sprinkles of my children mixed onto my Flickr page. So here's fair warning:) This picture is from a few days ago. It had stayed cloudy and cool but no lightning so I was willing to venture out into this open space. The trail curves through rolling hills before climbing to this large open space. The sun is front at this spot and perfect for cloudy days for the soft light. Elijah who is now 2, still has short legs that make it hard to keep up with all the hills. This Radio Flyer has came in handy on so many occasions. When we reached the top I pulled him into the field to quickly get this shot of the cloudy skies and gentle light in the clouds. I love using my 85mm for the soft bokeh it brings and also so I can back up further away so he forgets I'm even taking pictures. I love it when that happens!! There is a fire that is in somewhat close proximity - not dangerously so but enough to have smokey air. Makes my heart sad to see all the fires again in Colorado. This also meant a fire ban was in place for 4th of July in most places. I hope this coming Winter yields more moisture and that this dry trend stops somehow. Many of my favorite areas are currently on fire. Prayers and good thoughts for rain are much appreciated. Me and the kids have terrible colds and will probably spend the weekend at home with the AC blasting catching up on favorite movies haha. Sending much love to each one of you. Thank you as always for taking the time to read my thoughts and support me on my photography adventure!
xx
Rachel
Every once in awhile a photographers early morning efforts are well and truly rewarded and on this particular morning mine were in buckets. From not so promising dark blue clouds an epic sunrise suddenly began to develop and in no time at all had my running...well walking very quickly over the shingle beach at Eastbourne trying to decide which side of the pier to use...to be honest it was so good i used both mainly because this side gave off the better reflections on the wet sand
We seldom have bright sun in November but when we did I always made an effort to get something on film even if there wasn't the best light on it. A pair of clean SOO's head 909 as they start to accelerate 97 cars of train 909 out of the Caffey swamp just east of Caffey on November 5, 1983. 706 and 4425 have there work cut out for them over the rolling profile of the Sault Ste. Marie-Gladstone main with this heavy train.
In the evening, as the sun's rays settled, I felt the austerity of the autumn-colored leaves as if they had turned to winter colors.
I listened to the words of the leaves that I felt like that. :)
"Once in awhile, in the middle of ordinary life, God gives us a fairy tale. ~ Unknown.
The historic Magnolia Plantation is like walking through a fairy tale After visiting the enchanted Plantation the fall of 2014, I knew I wanted to see these beautiful gardens in full bloom. Unfortunately a couple of days before my visit, mother nature decided to throw a curve ball, laying down a killing two day freeze. It was certainly disappointing to see the azaleas limp and hanging on the bushes. Once I overcame the disheartenment, I realized that the dying blooms actually added to the charm of this almost two century year old plantation.
This is the last of the series for this week and for awhile. I took over 24,000 photos in three days but my identify cannot handle only being a concert photographer. Because, I love music but, at the end of the day, it's too much to be limited to three songs and have the same limited space as everyone else while desperately trying to be different and unique. I start out each of my days on Earth trying to be both kind and exceptional and, if I fail in any of these two things, I feel I have wasted and squandered my time. No one knows how much time they have left. We can only appreciate what we have for the moment.
The Lauryn Hill shoot was quite nerve wracking I must admit. Fleet Foxes had decided to deny pretty much anyone the right to shoot them the day before they played (like I needed any more of their mugs on my hard drive anyway) and luckily Kelela allowed photographers to shoot the whole set (!) which is something that has only ever happened once in my life shooting the band Of Montreeal. So, photographers were prepared for just about anything and Lauryn Hill has a habit of showing up really late (I'd already missed her once at a fest for this reason) so we were all pleasantly surprised when she showed up relatively on time and allowed photographers to shoot for the first three songs as is standard).
Still, as shoots go, it was one of the most crowded photopits I've ever been in. The mic shadow on her face was pretty extreme so it was hard to get shots where it wasn't obscured at least substantially and, as I took this one, there was a guy behind me balancing his lens on my head. Yeah, I think I'll go back to posting street photography shots for awhile.
It's too bad that Lauryn Hill cancelled and postponed some upcoming shows. She still has a wonderful voice and has excellent politics but fans deserve to have some love, too, and some sense that their time and money is also respected...it's a precarious relationship sometimes.

Been away awhile - under the weather for a bit (not covid), and then jury duty (not selected), but recovered just in time to spend a fantastic couple days with my sister and her husband and my hubby at Olympic National Park. Several weeks with almost no rain here in NW Washington meant no mud and no slugs - but the forest was still its amazing self. Great place and company for our fifty-fourth anniversary.
