Full-frame camera + tele lens wide open (in this case: 85 f/1.8 on 1.8) => focusing problems are bound to occur! So what is the best af mode?
Results:
- The best strategy for sharp pictures is to use the center AF sensor, single-shot, no recomposing, just shoot! :-)
- The second best strategy is to use one of the corner AFs in the neighbourhood of the target.
- Recomposing can lead to visible unsharpness.
- Liveview can be a good strategy also, but with a hand-held cam it is not really an alternative ...
Note: Another common trick is to use the burst / multi-shot / paparazzi mode and to move the cam a bit back and forth while shooting. Unfortunately this does not work with strobes, because the recyle time is to long.
Note: Another trick is to use Ai Servo or Servo AF in case the target (or the cam) moves a bit. Can work quite well, but standard AF is normally the most precise AF mode.

Jazz is the music that washes away the dust of everyday life.
---- Art Blakey
Great art speaks across time. American abolitionists read Dante's Devine Comedy for inspiration. Five hundred years from now, people will be listening to Satchmo's "West End Blues" for the same reason.

Canon EOS 55
From Wikipedia with additions from me:
The Canon EOS 50 (also known as the ELAN II in the USA and the EOS 55 in Japan) is an autofocus, autoexposure 35mm SLR camera. It was aimed at the advanced amateur market, and featured a rear command dial, support for custom functions, and an optional BP-50 battery grip, with a dedicated portrait shutter release. The BP-50 could take two standard 2CR5 batteries or 8x standard AA batteries in a removable tray. The body was constructed of structural plastic, with the lens mount and top deck enclosed in an aluminium cover.
Three variants of the camera were produced, each of which was available with a quartz date imprint back. The basic model was the EOS 50. The EOS 50E variant introduced an enhanced version of the 3-zone eye-controlled autofocus system that was first seen on the EOS 5 camera. The Japan-only EOS 55 was available in an all-black version – rather than the standard black and silver colour scheme – and included a panorama option. Sliding the button at the bottom of the rear of the camera causes panels to mask off all of the negative except for a 13 x 36mm strip in the middle.
The EOS 50 was also the first camera to implement Canon's E-TTL flash system. Canon's previous TTL system metered light reflected from the film onto a sensor during the actual exposure. E-TTL on the other hand fires a low-intensity pre-flash before exposure, and meters the reflected light through the camera's normal metering system.
Sales of the EOS 50 began in September 1995, and ended after the introduction of the replacement model, the EOS 30 in October 2000.
The EOS 55 pictured was made available in the UK via Jessops and in very limited numbers. I bought it as I liked to play with the optional crop panorama feature which was switchable mid-roll. In my humble opinions, it remains a very beautiful camera for the era and was probably my favourite SLR film camera.

Mainau is an island in Germany, located on Lake Constance and more precisely in the northwestern part known as Lake Überlingen (Überlinger See). The island is connected by the south with the mainland by means of a bridge.
Mainau is included in the communal territory of the city of Constanza and in fact the best way to get there is through the urban transport of this city, which has a bus line with stop at the access to the island. This is an important tourist destination thanks to its mild climate, thanks to which it shelters a vegetation very rich in species, even subtropical and tropical.
The entrance to the island is made after payment, but its careful vegetation, the millions of flowers that decorate it (as is evident, mainly in the months of spring and summer), its greenhouses of palms and butterflies - in which they fly over freely to visitors and they are of great variety and size - their space with varied types of complex swings, and their small area with different animals, together with other details, are of an objective interest.
In agreement with all the previous thing, the place also is denominated the island of the flowers.

Camera on tripod. Central autofocus point lined up exactly on front foot of gorillapod (large zoom model). This is the kind of distance one would use for head and shoulder portraits. The distance between the front and rear feet of the gorillapod was very roughly the nose to ear distance of a face. Shutter fired by camera button with 2s timer delay. Autoexposure. All images given the same preset slight boost in contrast and slight sharpening. Front edge of gorillapod foot aligned exactly with 200cm distance marker on ruler.
Autofocus on front pod foot. Each autofocus shot renewed this autofocus setting, and never changed it. I also took similar series of shots at shorter distances and found the same consistency of autofocus. At least in good light it seems to focus very consistently, and at nearly all apertures, a little bit in front of the front edge of the sharp DoF range.
DoF seems to be between 205 and 209 cm when autofocussed at 200 cm.
Compare with AF at f1.4, f2, f2.8, f4, f5.6, f8, f11, f16, f22.

Canon updated the firmware for my 5D MkIII to allow AF at f/8, so I'm using my 500mm lens here, plus the 2.0x teleconverter, for 1000mm of focal length hand held.
Of course, it's not as easy as using a bare lens or a 1.4X TC, but it works well, at least for slow birds. I'll work on faster birds when I get back from NYC.

IMPOSSIBLE SX70 BW Black Frame
IMPOSSIBLE Frog-Tongue
Shooting Temp: 68F
I've been wanting to shoot this film for so long...at first they didn't make SX70 ISO 100 speed film, but now they do, and I love Black Frame.
This shot was taken on the same balcony that I did a black frame version of my wife a while ago with my Mamiya RB67. It creates such great light in the afternoon, and usually has a little breeze...
The constant autofocus target designator box is locked on to Vault Boy.
Some additional notes:
-The flip screen's range of motion is greatly reduced with the L-plate attached.
-The multi-lever agricultural-style top controls reminds me of some WWII cockpits, and can easily be manipulated by touch.
-The electronic viewfinder is quite usable, but a problem is that I use my off-center vision at low light to scan for composition and details. Since the EVF uses a sequential RGB flashing backlight similar in concept to DLP projectors, there will be color trails with object edges when looking around until the eye rests at a fixed point. I don't think it will be a huge deal for most people though.
Update 2014-11-07 -
I just finished reading Schlemming with the Fulcrum and an interview with a pilot discussing how the F-16 Heads Up Display optics focus to infinity makes horizon scanning easy. It reminded me years ago of a poster on a forum asking about potential eyestrain with EVFs. All camera electronic viewfinders that I've seen or read about are for now 2D displays.
I tend to shoot with both eyes open so I can quickly switch my view out of the viewfinder or - depending on lens - overlap both exterior view with the viewfinder view. But shooting with one eye I can understand that there may be an eyestrain issue for some depending on the range of the subject and how often eye refocusing is needed.
Personally after three years of shooting with an EVF I haven't encounter difficulties yet. I suspect in cases of eyestrain inadequate diopter adjustment or inadequate EVF refresh rate would be more likely culprits.
5 months into using AutoFocus for time/task management.
I'm back to one combined list. Using paperclips to mark the page where I'm adding stuff and the task I'm working on.

I think that it is kind of sad that this the photo with the most views on my photostream. So guys why don't you take a little of your time to look at the other pictures that are on here and comment them. This is just a very old polaroid camera with a sonar autofocus.

A9 continuous autofocus (AF-C) with tracking in the burst mode, while also using Eye AF / face recognition.
I was randomly taking photos of people walking past me, with the camera in my lap and lens pointed in the direction of people walking down the corridor of the Chicago Midway airport. The only focusing done was by simply pressing the Eye AF button, then clicking.
I was surprised at how well the A9 acquired focus individually, but I was really amazed to see this also worked very well for the burst mode.
This was a series of 52 shots, and the A9 nailed EVERY SINGLE frame. I have uploaded all 52 continuous frames into a separate album, which you can access by clicking this link.
Below is the last of the 52 images from this series.
