Yashica 300 Autofocus ~1993

35mm AF SLR camera

Three auto focus modes: Standard, continuous predictive and, my favourite, trap focus, focus at a given distance, act the shutter and leave the camera, when something passes on the focus area it shoots, great for kids and animals.

Also a three step AF, allows to choose the AF range.

The programs include aperture/shutter priority, manual, shift and auto back light. Exposure compensation is also available.

Shutter speeds 8"-1/200 and B, in manual mode.

It's motorised allowing single shot or continuous 2 fps.

AE lock, DX coding and includes, in the back door a panorama adapter, the problem is that if installed the all roll is going to be panorama style.

AF power zoom 28-70mm 1:3.5-4.5, with three speed levels, depending on the force applied, slow, medium and fast, with manual override.

I'm sure it's mother loved it.

Apart from the flip-up front-cover/flash bracket - later seen on some of the Kodak APS cameras - it's a fairly conventional point-and-shoot fully-automatic camera, although with manual film advance using a thumbwheel. The plastic rewind crank is very small and fiddly to use - and quite stiff.

35mm f3.5 Ektanar lens; choice of 9v batteries. DX-coded film speed with no manual setting. Made in Japan, 1986-1988.

Manufactured from 1985 to 1988 by Minolta Camera Co. of Osaka, Japan. While other manufactures were all entrenched working on autofocus lenses for their line of 35mm SLRs, Minolta quietly rocked the industry back on it’s heels with the introduction of the first in-body autofocus system for 35mm SLRs. It was a bold and risky move—Minolta changed from their beloved MC/MD lens mount to an mechanical/electronic “A” mount. The camera featured many other “firsts” other than the autofocus that today we think of as standards. It had an in-body winder providing film advance and motorized rewind. To make room for the needed battery power, they made use of a grip on the right side of the camera—today, most cameras have a grip of this type whether the batteries are there or not! It featured pushbutton controls instead of dials and had a large, external LCD display.

What’s in a name? More correctly, what’s in how you write that name? In Europe it was called the “7000 AF” and in Japan the “Alpha 7000” (and you thought Sony came up with that all by themselves!). In North America, Minolta chose to market it with the Maxxum name. In spelling the name on the body of the camera, the decision was made to use an interlocking double “x” (as this example has—see picture). Looks nice until Exxon sees it in a print ad. The interlocking double “X” had been an Exxon trademark for some time. While Exxon did sue, they and Minolta came to a gentlemen’s agreement on the problem. Minolta apologized and agreed to change the logo-type to strait “xx”. And Exxon allowed Minolta to leave what had been sold by that point out there and only change new and undistributed stock. I wonder if it would have been settled the same way today…

The unique in-camera autofocus system relied on a semi-silvered pattern on the mirror (shown here) that allowed a portion of the image to transmit thru the viewing mirror onto a smaller “piggy back” mirror that reflected that broken image down into the bottom of the mirror box to a set of beam splitters and CCD devices. Basically, it focuses by looking for an area of contrast and focusing it to the finest detail (i.e. a hard edge) and the focus point of the lens. Very cool—works with ANY lens on the camera. The “A” mount also provided data to the camera about focal length, zoom position and aperture settings. Seems another company decided this was too close to their patent and sued. And let’s just say they we’re not as nice as Exxon. Unfortunately for Minolta, its autofocus design was found to infringe on the patents of Honeywell and in 1991, Minolta was ordered to pay Honeywell damages, penalties, trial costs and other expenses in a final amount of $127.6 million.

On a personal note, I’m very fond of this camera. As a younger man, I worked in a camera shop. This was the last “new” camera I sold as I went into a different career path in mid 1985….

I shot in DX mode which crops away the extra pixels and takes me 1.5X closer while allowing for up to 7 FPS with the Nikon D810's Nikon MB-D12 Battery Grip using the 8 AA battery option! 8 Duracels took me through around 3,000 shots no problem--maybe more! I was shooting at the equivalent of 900mm with the 1.5x crop factor! Pretty close! Had I gone with the Nikon D4s, I would have gotten 12 fps, but no DX crop factor, as the sensor has only around 14mp, compared to the d810's 36 megapixels! Sure the larger pixel size on the Nikon D4s full frame sensor comes in handy indoors or at night, but in the bright sun, there's more than enough light for the smaller pixels in crop mode! Sure we lose some pixels from the outer edges when shooting in DX crop mode, but most of those pixels would be cropped away in lightroom anyway. And the smaller files make the memory cards last longer, while also upping the FPS to 7 shots per second! Not quite 12 FPS, but still awesome and enough I felt!

Autofocus misses from time to time, especially in visually complex scenes like this colorful market scene in the city of Jinka, in southern Ethiopia. I shot quick and the camera took its best guess. Oh well. The importance here: The lovely, funny young girl in the blue dress led me through the streets of Jinka for close to an hour for her own amusement. This was the only shot I managed to get of her.

Gear acquisition syndrome strikes again.

Picked this up in a Salvation Army shop this morning. There was an empty film pack inside which on removing and replacing brought the thing back to life. Shutter and roller motors seem okay, but I'm not convinced that the sonar af system is working. Manual focus is moving the lens though so that'll do me.

Slightly faster lens than the Spirit 600, but it uses slower film though. Other differences are a tripod socket and cable release thread, which will be very useful.

Ordered some PX70 to run through it, when I got home.

Came with the matching Polatronic flash, which has some corroded contacts in the battery compartment, and at the moment when mounted stops the camera doing anything, possibly by design.

IMPOSSIBLE Project Color 600 film

ND Pack Filter

10/13 batch 44014102013 Pack 1

Out of the first pack, it wasn't until the last two images that the film started behaving as expected. Now, it might be my camera, but I've run A TON of Color CP through it in the last months so I would be surprised if it was the camera.

This film has more intense colors, but leans VERY warm. This shot was in overcast cool light and it's still pretty warm. The new 600 film seems VERY contrasty as well. It drops off to blacks very early, but it seems to handle highlights slightly better...but not much.

And it doesn't develop any faster...I don't care what TIP says, it's still 45 minutes like it was in the last batch.

Barefoot and pregnant, in the kitchen.
