Without autofocus, I knew I’d never get many share images of the action so I had to do some thinking. First, it’s always a struggle to find a place to shoot, especially with a tripod. It’s just a price I’m willing to pay. I like the time a tripod gives me to compose a picture. Next, I needed a spot on which I could pre-focus. The exit of the gate seemed like a logical place.
The D5100’s ISO goes a lot further up than the 1600 limit of the D80. I thought 1/320th would be fast enough to freeze the action (I was wrong) and I wanted just a little extra edge on the depth-of-field. So that’s how I arrived at 1/320th@F4 with an ISO of 3200. (Just in case you were wondering.)
You can see the cowboys on both sides of the gate are in (acceptable) focus so the blur on the cowgirl is purely motion. I prefer to freeze subjects (it’s just my tripod-guy nature) but motion isn’t always a bad thing in a picture.

Polaroid Black and White 600 film (expired 2003)

This is interesting film. I didn't know that Polaroid made Black and White film for integral, and it hasn't been produced for quite a while...Annie from the Impossible Project sent me this film and told me it would be kind of unpredictable.
I knew it was going to give "interesting" results and then start forming these little bubbles, but it's very fun to experiment.
It takes about 10-15 minutes for the final image to take form, and then about 1-2 hours later, the bubbles start forming.
Tully Church is located in Laughanstown, sometimes spelled Lehaunestown or Lehaunstown.
Tomorrow I am travelling to Galway and I decided that I would bring a Sony 28-135 G lens and I am willing to bet that few people are aware of this lens. Anyway, I decided to give it a try this this morning and discovered that my sensor had hundreds of dust spots that showed up as I approached f/22. I decided that it was best to have it professionally cleaned. At 3PM when I collected my camera I decided to get the LUAS to Laughanstown where there is an ancient church and graveyard.
When I returned home I discovered that there had been an autofocus problem and about 50% of the images were unusable. I was really surprised but after much investigation I discovered that the camera was somehow been reset during the sensor cleaning process and it was using version 1.01 of the firmware instead of the version 3.0 [the most recent version is actually 3.01]. This was a serious problem as attempts to upgrade in the past have failed and I had to bring the camera to my local dealer to be upgraded. Some of my lenses will not work correctly with ver 1.01 so I had to try to upgrade at home and much to me surprise the upgrade actually worked.
A few hours ago I tested the lens by taking some photographs on Henrietta Street and have decided that there is actually a problem so I may need to select another lens.
Birmingham Barons vs Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Regions Field shot from a Canon EOS m with an old autofocus Tamron 28-300mm f3.5-6.6 adapted with the Canon EF to EF-M. This version of the Tamron lens gets much better reviews than the later XI model, and early tests with both agree with this assessment. As the night got darker, the autofocus was not quick enough, so most of these are manual focus.
Both images were taken with the same camera, with the same camera settings, within the same car, of the same target car, and with AutoFocus.
First image is zoomed in with intent to capture just the car. The AutoFocus feature decided to focus on, of all things, the windshield!
Second image is with no zoom, but cropped with an image editor. It obviously focused on the car.
Why can't all digital cameras have a manual focus collar around the lens in case the AutoFocus doesn't focus correctly?
Did I bother to switch my camera into manual focus mode so that these photos would be sharp? No. No I did not.

I've been trying to implement my own autofocus routine for the observatory automation software I'm writing for my observatory.
It's taken several months because of the terrible weather we've had over the summer, but finally a few nights ago it worked correctly for the first time.
The reason I didn't use software such as FocusMax was partly because I didn't want to spend (waste) time writing an Ascom-compatible driver for what is a bespoke setup, and partly because I prefer to do things myself when possible :-)
There are still tweaks I want to make get the final image absolutely bang on focus, but the current method gives a final image that is within a single motor step of best focus, which is more or less focussed as the steps from the stepper motor and subsequent gearing are so small.
This was the next level up in price, with most of the cameras featuring autofocus, auto advance, auto rewind, etc. Some even had basic zoom.
Autofocus with Techart Pro adapter at f/2.8. The autofocus function worked better than I expected and having a monopod greatly helped me to endure the long time shooting.
As Techart Pro mentioned, their adapter works with lens that weights less than 700 g but actually heavier lens can work too as long as the lens has some kind of support below and the the push-pull mechanism now works on the body instead of the lens. Smaller body like A6300 definitely has more advantage.
